Good list, I’m a huge fan of Raul Perez. Ironically, two weeks ago I was in Vouvray with the onwer of Huet and they were nice enough to open a 03’ Clos du Bourg and a 93’ Le Haut-Lieu both sweet Moelleux styles. Stunning stuff…

Great job explaining why these wines are underrated and why they could be a good investment. I appreciate that you mentioned some are made from grape varieties that are not as popular as some of the more well-known varieties, making them less expensive than some of the more popular wines, but also meaning they have the potential to appreciate in value as more people become interested in them. Thanks for sharing!

drinking the mencia wine you recommended right now in real time! i think of sour cherry ,crushed gravel and strawberry. the wine mimics the pinot without the floral tones and doesnt have a long finish but its very different than anything ive tried. excellent value as you say....all your recommendations have been spot on ! (dont like wasting an evening with mediocrity)

Thank you very much for the video! I always take note of your recommendations and see if I can find it here in Stockholm! I bought some Raul perez mencia not too long ago. Recently we opened a "Ultreia" bottle and I have to say I didn't like it very much. It was my first time experienceing mencia so maybe my expectations was another. The mencia grape is very different though and I can see why some people like it a lot. I'm going to give it another chance in the future when the rest of the bottles have some age.

Thanks very much! Glad you enjoy the selections. Yes it an excellent example of mencia, but it is possible that is not your thing (at least when young). Always good to try though. You never know! Cheers!

Yes, I've recently been buying Grattamacco (and Le Pupille's Saffredi) as the prices of the likes of Sassicaia, Ornellaia and, for that matter, Flaccianello have gone statospheric. On another topic, with Bordeaux en primeur 2022 upon us, have you come across Ch. De Fieuzal? It was an unknown to me prior to this vintage but seems highly rated this time.

Thanks, John. Auxey-Duresses and St Aubin are two white Burgundy appellations I drink a lot: currently drinking '13, '14 and '15 vintages. How about Coteaux de Layon for great value Loire stickies? Much better buy than Huet, imho.
@AttorneySomm Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much! Glad to hear it Re Burgundy. This Huet is dry. Agree that Coteaux de Layon offers good value for a sweet wine.
@stevenholt4936 Жыл бұрын
@@AttorneySomm Yes, indeed. I always found the sec slightly off-dry and curiously unsatisfying. Many years ago I ran a tasting, supposedly with Huet Moelleux as the star. The tasting was blind in pairs. The theme was Loire valley; so we had Pouilly Fume v Sancerre etc. Anyway the last pairing was a Huet Moelleux v Coteaux de Layon. The first was £42 and the second £6.50 (this was nearly 40 years ago). We weren't told the wines or prices and everyone (including me) went for the Layon. Between us we bought the merchant's entire stock. Nobody bought a single bottle of the Huet. A lesson for me: judge the wine not the label.

Some surprises on your list, for sure. Never tasted a wine from the Amalfi Coast or given them any thought. I’ll have to change that. Big fan of Huet. I am holding several bottles. Curious if you have a favorite age range for them.
@AttorneySomm Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Always trying to discover new gems! Huet is one like Bandol for me. I enjoy it but it’s hard to have the patience to drink it at its peak. But given the price, I don’t mind digging in early for some of them. It will age effortlessly for 15-20 years or more and longer for some with RS.
@gogreenmsu03 Жыл бұрын
I’m going to keep buying a few each year, and eventually one or two might get to be that age if I’m lucky!

This mencia is not a grape im familiar with and theirs not much info in hugh johnsons wine book. what would be the closest grape in taste from california or italy?

It has red cherry aromas with medium plus acidity, so perhaps a Pinot Noir or light merlot but with more structure and tannins.
