I live in zone 6a and every spring I hear the first oriole between May 3 and May 5. For well over 25 years they've come back right on time! Amazing!

Just say one for the first time on a hummingbird feeder I have took a pic and posted it on my Facebook group. Now I know what they are and thanks to this amazing video I know what they love. Can’t wait to attract more.

We get both orchard and Baltimore all spring, summer, and fall. They gorge on suet cakes, oranges, grape jelly, and homemade hummingbird bird sugar water in an oriole feeder. We also have flowering fruit trees. We cut the oranges in 1/4’s and pokes on them and put them on tree branches early spring to attract them. We have tried other jams and jellies but they prefer the grape.

Thank you! Watching the orioles arrive at our feeder brings us so much joy every spring. That first sighting is amazing! They do love that bird jelly and fresh oranges for sure. Thanks for offering so many great bird feeding options. I just love to watch all the beautiful birds that visit. Orioles are my favorite. 😊

When we moved to our home I found out there was a small oriole population in a nearby cemetery a few miles away... So I started putting out jelly/nectar feeders... Took a few years, but now my yard is like an oriole haven... I have to refill feeders daily, theres just so many. I've watched babies grow up and return. It's awesome. This year due to Covid I was late putting out my feeders and saw orioles (probably from last year) come to my window sing at me letting me know "wheres my food". We have a lot of hummingbirds too, and they often share the nectar feeders with the orioles. FWIW, you don't need special jelly... Any Grape jelly works, orioles love it. Also, just make your own nectar, be sure to boil it... No color needed. Mealworms if you can, all birds love them. Orioles will still feed at watered-down jelly, even if rain has diluted it. Woodpeckers also love nectar feeders.

Hi Liz, Just came across your channel and found it very informing. We are originally from Rochester. Definitely going to get a oriole feeder from you. We just started our own bird live stream. Live bird watching - New Hampshire. Check it out your feedback would be welcomed. Keep up the good work.

Thank u! That was very helpful and I think ur products are terrific. I’m out in the desert in California and I’m getting hooded orioles at my hummingbird feeders. I was disappointed to find no oriole feeders at the retail locations where I normally find hummingbird supplies. I’ll be placing my first order with u very soon including the butterfly feeder which I thought is unique.

Great video. We have a lot of Orioles here in Maryland near DC . They'll come and look at the feeders but will rarely feed. Finally I put a Red Solo Cup on a lawn chair cup holder ( sip clip ) and that did it. I got a male to feed. I have the sugar water, fruit halves and jelly feeders out but the Solo cup in the sip clip w/ jelly worked when other feeders did not. I think more aggressive birds (mocking birds and Robins are scaring the orioles away from the feeders).

Great idea! Try adding some perches to it to give them a little more surface area to land and you may have even more success!

Thank you so much for the info! I’m a Texan who is now living in the Buffalo area and was so excited to see orioles! You mentioned mockingbird s. That’s the one bird I have missed not hearing here. Are they prevelant? Thanks!
@TheBirdHouseNY4 жыл бұрын
Mockingbirds are pretty common in upstate NY. They aren't as common as the catbirds are at feeders but they are often found in suburban and urban areas. They are mostly migratory, but some will stay all year long.

I get hooded Orioles I’ve never seen them on my suet but they love grapes 🍇 . Seems like they would eat the sweet stuff through out the day but go for the meal worms closer to sundown. The orioles aren’t always here but once one shows up the offspring aren’t far behind.

It took me years too! Just today in SE PA had two male orioles visit my feeder at the same time. My first. Last winter (2021) I had a female all winter...one of only a few reported in the state! My yard is a typical suburban yard. I recommend multiple feeders with jelly and oranges out in a visible spot in early spring....also put them near trickling water- ponds and or fountains. Additionally I highly recommend a device called the bird magnet I found on amazon. It has brought in so many birds for me....bluebirds, warblers, orioles...i put it on a timer and it plays a bunch of natuve songbirds randomly. Perseverance will pay off.

I've heard you should not use human jelly, just to add since it wasn't expressed here. You can get sugar free or you can make your own and be safe, just smash up some grapes! I got a nice feeder on Amazon for $13 that has a glass cup for the jelly or whatever you want to put in it.

The oranges attract the ants.. how do you control this? Also do squirrels eat oranges? Squirrels and chipmunks attack the bird feeders and they chew away the feed window, even though I had squirrels free feeders! Advice please. Thank you

is there any ingredient in Jelly that we should avoid? corn syrup? dyes? I notice the one oriole that fed liked Apricot preserves.

Yes! Avoid dyes, corn syrup and artificial sweeteners. Apricot preserves sound great, I'll try that next year!
@aprilculver40614 жыл бұрын
I ran out of grape jelly because of the pandemic but I had some apricot jam so I puréed it put that out they ate that they also were drinking out of the hummingbird feeder‘s with the hummingbird nectar instead of the Oreo nectar. I hate cat birds as well as chipmunks eating the jelly and the nectar. I sat the cups on a deep plate that I filled with water so the ant would stay out. It was so cold this year they were really hungry when they arrived. I had already put out Berry suet in and another fruit suet of some kind waiting for them to arrive but as soon as I saw them I quickly made the nectar and got it out there with oranges and jelly and they were very happy. I will have to try you nectar additive and maybe mealyworms. Thank you for your video
