Following the tragic death of Dawn Brancheau, a trainer at SeaWorld Orlando who was pulled under water and drown by SeaWorlds largest killer whale, Tilikum, the park suspended the Believe shows at all of their parks. The shows resumed on Feb. 27, 2010 without any trainers being allowed to enter the water with the killer whales. The show began with a tribute to Dawn.
Here's the tribute, a couple of highlights from the 11 a.m. show, and an interview with Chuck Tompkins, SeaWorlds head of animal training after the show.

You know I watch this and it just makes me sad. I actually knew Dawn way back in the day when she started in this business back in New Jersey and I know she loved it. But the feelings are very different when you have a personal relationship with the person. We all love and miss you Dawn.

I think she deserved a longer "tribute" than that.....poor lady. And Tilikum deserved his freedom. He died a slave. As will all the animals at that park. Rest peacefully, Dawn and Tilikum. You both deserved a happier ending.

Of course the show will never be the same without Dawn. But as a Sea World patron since the diaper ages, I can tell you that her spirit & inspiration will live on. I have met Dawn on several occasions and she was such a wonderful person. She could tell I had the passion for being a whale trainer and sadly informed me that my heart condition wouldn't allow it. She was honest, but respectful as well. She understands all of us. RIP!

The respectful thing for Sea World to have done would have been to have waited until after Dawn's service occured (on that Monday). That's what most individuals would have considered appropriate.

I don't work for Sea World, but I love the show, and Dawn was my favorite trainer there (although I still love all the trainers equally). I actually called work that day and told them I was going to be late just so I can catch this show. I wasn't impressed with the turnout, but it WAS 48 degrees, and it was windy & rainy. But nonetheless, it was still a beautiful tribute, and I was happy to be a part of it.

Her passing was so sad, but I hope it's a heartfelt message of what CAN and DOES occasionally happen with these animals when they are held in captivity for the majority of their lives. They don't belong there performing tricks to an audience. Of course, these whales could not be set free otherwise they would die due to their lack of know-how in the wild, but a sea pen could be an ideal change. Tilly has shown time and time again just the true nature and power of orcas. May they both rest in peace!

I'm not coming off as rude, but I wanted to let you know that these trainers loved Dawn as much as they loved the whales. They knew that if the show stopped altogether, then Dawn would never be happy again. I bet that Dawn was looking down on them & smiling, since she got to see that her dream of working with orcas will never die and continue to inspire other people. And for us Sea World fans, it was VERY hard to watch the whales perform without the trainers even touching them...

It was a good decision to keep the trainers out of the water, but people should aknowledge that if Tilikum was really angry because of captivity he wouldn't be involved in one incident 11 years after the previous one. tp1275 I have read several of your comments that you have posted on here and let me tell you something not all the killer whales in seaworld's collection were born in captivity. Tilikum was born in the wild and brought to Sealand of the Pacific where he was tormented by the other two females and was confined to small spaces that drove him nuts. You seriously need to do some research of your own before you go on defending Seaworld and giving misinformation to the public

If you saw the CNN interview last night,you can see that Dawn was in a prone position in some water... probably not a good idea since no one enters the water with Tilly, but in any case, animal behaviorists who have worked with him will eventually have an explanation in their report. This is hard for everyone, and my deepest condolensces to the Sea world family. Lets not forget that accidents happen at zoos and circuses too and Sea World has had no deaths in over 40 years.

it's down right uncomfortable. you watch some of the other vids here on the 27th show and you can most assuredly see the confused look on the orca's faces as the trainers "their friends" keep their distance, as if to say "this is the part where you come hug me, rub my tongue, kiss my nose and rub my back". I've been there myself and Dawn is the loveliest woman I've ever met, and the whales are the happiest animals I've seen in a long time. They treat them VERY well. I know what happened to Dawn Brancheau was terrifying and horrible but at the end of the day if events like that happen then surely it's time to let them back into the wild because to be fair there's really no point in those trainers being there to dance around and throw food out every now and then... @laurenjones90 Their fins are curled because of how much time they spend near the surface. Some of the whales' in captivity have straight fin, some don't. Some of the whales in the WILD have straight fins, and some do NOT. It is not the question of how small the tank is, but a question of how much time they spend near the surface of the water, because the deeper the water, the better the pressure is to help hold up the cartilage in the fin.

Nice video and nice tribute. I think that this tragic accident was as a result of an unfortunate incidence of the woman's hair causing a distraction. That was the latest finding that I heard on the news. Otherwise, her death probably wouldn't have happened. In watching the whales do their routine, they are creative, highly intelligent, very cooperative, and seem almost human. I really enjoyed watching this short production.

The other orcas shouldn't be punished (and I think lack of interaction with their trainers is punishment. Orcas love attention and to be touched! you dont understand. Dawn LOVED the whales. She died doing something she absolutely loved. Dawn would not have wanted them to stop the shows. And the orca was just angry, no one knows what the animals are thinking. So everyone should stop assuming things and just appreciate how beautiful these animals are.

@we1hate1ryanair Yes they are still not allowed in the water until SeaWorld can come up with a safty device to give the trainers more time to be alive in the event of another attack

And if she had abused them, then we would all agree that she didn't deserve to have her job and such. Clearly, no one would every abuse these creatures, even though they are trapped in a tiny little area like this.

I just don't get it. Why did this happen? I saw Free Willy, even I can understand that somethings can't be caged without there being a negative mental or physical reaction from the Kill Whales. Dawn appears to be a very beautiful soul, but if I had a half ton weighing cousin living on my couch and one morning I asked him to jump off the frig into the sink, then bounce me off the tip of his nose -- I'm sure he would slap the shit out of me then drown me in the garbage disposal.

This is absolutely fantastic stuff and it was very tragic to hear what had happened to Dawn. I've always wanted to go to seaworld and see the orcas in real life. But what became if Tilikum the whale responsible for the trainers death? And wasn't he also responsible for another trainers death where he was previously?
@skylarcrate7404
@skylarcrate7404 2 жыл бұрын
Wow you’re so so wrong. What became of Tilikum? He was stuck in captivity for the rest of his life, preforming daily and then he died. Do not expect a WILD animal to be placed in a swimming pool 24/7 and not expect them to go psychotic. Would you like to spend the rest of your life in a bathtub? No, you’d go insane. No whale is to blame here, it’s the sea world owners who let this barbaric show go on for so long.

I'm so angry...im not going to say "what Dawn would've wanted" because she's gone. But she clearly cared so much about the animals and her work. Her death was a tragedy that could have been avoided. Better still it was a real life example as to why things need to change to avoid the possibility of further deaths. Instead...seaworld have pretty much spat in her face and all who were truly close to her. They made assumptions about what she would've said and how she would've felt after her DEATH. Someone who is no longer here...and they're speaking on her behalf in ways that purely benefit seaworld and their profit, nothing more. Dawn is in a better place now...maybe she is swimming FREE like the animals at seaworld should be. Shame on you all and her DEAT, the deaths before her and any more are on your hands!

This is horribly wrong and sick! She literally died 3 days prior to this tribute. SeaWorld is evil and greedy as hell. They should have closed down the attraction for a reasonable amount of time and gave her a proper tribute. That would have been the respectful thing to do. She gives them years of her life and they give back a few seconds on a monitor. Corporate greed at its finest. They didn't give two shits about the tragedy that took her life! Dawn, Tilikum and all the other whales are the real victims of SeaWorlds greed!

@metridium. The 2010 profits are pretty much petty. They can keep their godforsaken money, but what really matters is that "bond" that should be kept alive and flourishing between people and animals.
