In this podcast, Ali Butt and senior journalist Naeem Mustafa discuss two tragic cases from India involving allegations of harassment leading to suic*de.
Case 1: Atul Subhash
Atul Subhash, a 34-year-old software engineer from Bengaluru, passed away on December 9, 2024. He left behind a detailed note and video, alleging harassment by his estranged wife, Nikita Singhania, and her family. Atul claimed his in-laws pressured him to pay ₹30 million (approximately $352,675) to settle divorce proceedings, along with additional demands for increased maintenance and visitation rights to see his four-year-old son. He also detailed the emotional and legal challenges he faced, including multiple court cases filed against him by his wife, which he claimed were false and intended to extort money.
Following his death, there was significant public outcry. Men's rights activists organized protests in several cities, highlighting concerns over the misuse of India's anti-dowry laws, which they argue are sometimes exploited to unjustly target men. In response to the allegations in Atul's note, Bengaluru police arrested Nikita Singhania, her mother Nisha Singhania, and her brother Anurag Singhania on charges of abetment to suicide. The trio was brought from Uttar Pradesh to Bengaluru for further legal proceedings.
Case 2: Puneet Khurana
Puneet Khurana, a 49-year-old café owner from Delhi, died by suicide on December 30, 2024. In a recorded video, Puneet alleged mental harassment by his wife, Manika Pahwa, whom he married in 2016. The couple co-owned a bakery called 'For God's Cake'. Puneet's family accused his wife and her parents of constant threats related to financial and property disputes. A 15-minute audio clip of a heated argument between the couple over their business has also surfaced, shedding light on the turmoil Puneet faced.
Following Puneet's death, his wife, Manika Pahwa, deleted her social media accounts. In her last post, she mentioned recovering from "toxicity and narcissistic abuse," though she did not name anyone specifically. Puneet's family is seeking justice, alleging that the mental pressure and harassment from his wife and her family led to his tragic decision.
