An old Rotel 5 disk cd changer gets an overhaul.

I recently repaired a 5 disc CD changer by Sony, changing the belts, and had the same problem aligning the tray when putting it back together. I eventually got it to work by putting in 5 discs and somehow it oriented itself. Great video by the way! The false leads and do-overs is the reality of repairing electronics--keeping those in the video is very educational!

I found that Aliexpress sells packs of suitable belts of various lengths say 20 for a fiver or so. You seem to get several of each length, so it's a bit of a lucky dip. I'm thinking of getting a set for spares. In the meanwhile I used an O ring for the tray drive which seems to work a treat....

Nice to see these old units still getting some TLC lavished on them. Rotel stuff always sounds good and it's a shame to send them to landfill. I bought a pack of belts of different sizes for a few dollars from AliExpress that has saved my bacon a few times. I recently bought a 'faulty' Aiwa DAT recorder from eBay for around $10US, compact little thing which just needed a new belt for the loading mechanism, and the remote control battery springs had been eaten away by battery corrosion -- I just epoxied a 2xAAA battery holder (50 cents) into the 2xAA compartment and it works just fine. I think this unit was just a victim of being shoved in the loft for years. Plays fine with some old computer DDS tapes I had lying around and sounds sweet. The belts I have are flat, but seem to work just fine in place of the square ones. I am now a DAT convert :)

It's interesting to see you repair units like this. The thrift stores are packed with old 5-disc changers and they sit and rot.

+Audioquest56 this one was for a paying customer. Some people hav massive cd collections. I have a 200 disk changer that is full and that is less than half my collection that I rarely listen to.

+Audioquest56 Nice! I got mine for free. Would love to have the 300 or 400 disk unit they made. I was thinking of getting an acrylic cover made for mine to show off the mechanics of it working. It is just cool to watch. Will make a video of it some day soon.

I too save old but good belts, nice job there on that pernickerty machine. Had an old Ferguson Videostar ( JVC/RCA ) do that sort of thing once, the problem was bad belts and a cracked plastic motor pulley. Thankfully I was able to get away with using a brass cassette motor pulley, took abit longer to lace the tape but it worked !

a trick we used on belts if one wasnt available was to put it in a glass of warm water and it worked

Well done :-D. I liked the way they indexed the platter rotation, i have a box full of optical sensors from old 5.25 inch tandon fdd's and loads from vcr's, simple but dam usefull :-D When it didnt stop within the range of the centering arm i just got confused, i didnt think that the momentum of the platter was being taken into account, clever and daft at the same time lol. People have said "try elastic bands" but they dont have the stretch propertys of real belts.

Thanks so much for your repair class on this cd changer. I have exactly the same equipment and having problems to find the belts for replacement . The one for opening still find but the other on the back is not working. Do you have an idea where I can find that belt? Respectfully !

Good stuff! I 'learnt' something when you tested the optical sensor. Always been a tinkerer, but never had much experience at component-level repair, so your videos are really helpful. Started to tinker again, so I bought the entry-level Rigol O-scope and am starting to poke around again in my spare time. [SARCASM ON]Now if you would stop being, so UNSAFE! I would NEVER put my finger on a moving, rubber-band-drive, plastic mechanism. Because of that, I obviously know WAY more than you! [/sarcasm]. :-) Just trying to keep it lively in here!!

same thing happened to me in a aiwa hifi system where the belt was a bit to tight and disc turntable would not turn. I was then forced to boil the original belt in the microwave about 10-15 min and works much better now.

I used to save the belts from Electronics like VCR from Funai for instance, whenever I see the timing mark is wrong or the gear is badly damaged, I can save the belt for Capstan Shaft for the VCR's and I also recycled the DVD Player, DVD and CD Rom, and Portable Tape Player by saving the belts also and the Electrolytic cap is what I saved from Electronics when it's starting to acting up weird.

I get alot of computer DVD drives with bad belts, I just use dental rubber bands. sure its harder on the bearing of the pulley and motor but otherwise they'd be junk cause finding belts anymore is hard...

+Jay Walt The initial belt I put o this was .5' smaller than original, and that extra tension prevented it from working. I had the same problem on my Taascam DA40. Initially the belt I tried would not work and I had to order the correct belt from Tascam.

12voltvids I envy your patience my friend. Once upon a time I used to have patience, BUT, that kinda got lost after the 5+ years of bench repair work I did before finally moving away from that into an electronics engineering position.

+THEtechknight I hung in for 20 years before throwing in the towel and moving into the telecom industry a dozen years ago. Told myself I wouldn't touch electronics again, and managed to stay away for 10 years, and then I decided needed a hobby and make a little money while I was at it. It started when people started calling me wanting me to fix their stuff after all the shops closed up. I find that I am mostly limiting myself to audio gear now, and the odd plasma TV.

12voltvids I still like to do repairs, just burned out on it. 20 years is a long time, I have barely been around that long since birth. hehe. I was doing bench work for around 5 to 7 years. right out of high school pretty much. Then got into programming/development/engineering after that. Been doing that for 3+ years.

+THEtechknight I hear you. I worked for the Sony corporation for a year fight out of school, then on to work for an independent service center for 20. People used to look down on service techs, but back in the 80's and 90's I was making 60-70K a year when the median wage back then was 35-40K. In the early 2000's the bottom fell out, so I bailed and went to a large telecom, and love this work. Every day is something different. 9 more years to go to retirement with a nice pension.
