Excellent thorough video. I just got one of these decks for free and its exterior is in perfect condition, but it does not play. Press Play, FF or RW and the tape doesn't move. I took a look inside and it looks like the belt is somehow twisted over itself and tied up in the wheels... (shrugs) Thanks to this video I'm able to get inside and see a viable solution to get it fixed. I need some more small tools and a couple of hours. (I'll make sure the cat helps out where he can.) Thank you so much for making this video!

Hello, bought TC-WE705S this year, damaged in traffic: all dolbyS daughter boards were floating inside the case and lots of solder joints on the the mainboard were cracked, but I managed to fix it and it plays and records fine now. Wonderful video! Thank you!

Nice repair! I have also got this deck, I got it almost for free. It sounds very good, I really like the dolby S function! The mechanism however is very noisy when it changes direction. I had to do some work to the motor, change the belt and change the pinchroller. A nice feature is the 2x fast forward when you press the F.F. or rewind button. It automatically slows down when it reaches the end of the tape, so the tape will not be ripped apart.

I believe the KE600S is the 3-head, dual capstan version of this one, that was also sold as the KA2ES. The chassis of the -400S (two head), -500S, and -600S are basically the same, I don't know if there are many differences in the boards.

Thanks! I learned some more useful tidbits! My recent acquisition of a Kenwood KXW6040 was also from Ebay, and damaged in what appears to be a violent drop! I'll pull and check the circuit board! It boots up, and clicks when buttons are pressed, but doesn't operate. The B deck briefly played normally, and I was able to advance to the next song-but it soon froze up again after a couple minutes. The A deck won't operate at all. It's a mystery, and my training is limited to a B.E.&E. course in the Navy, and a lot of tinkering around over the past 30 years! Your videos are invaluable to me! Jim

I was suspecting the RCA connections to the board and was glad it was something that simple. Ran into that a few times myself. Usually from people using junk Monster brand cables that are WAY, WAY too tight on those connections and stress them to cracking. What I learned today was the motor repair. Never did that before so I nabbed a junk one out of my pile and followed along to learn. Thanks!

Why so much BIAS against these late 1990s SONY decks? Like if it's not weighting a ton is a crime. And by the way credit to Sony for making light what others still needed a metric tonne of hardware to do so. This is a testament to their engineering, not the contrary. Call me an ignorant, but I never found any advantage of using Dolby configurations. In all the devices that I used and featured this, I just felt that it was some kind of tone control. The more complex the Dolby, the warmer the sound was. It killed the high ends as if you were turning a treble or tone knob. I always switched that stuff off no matter what in order to have a more crisp or bright sound.

In a perfect world the emphasis added would be perfectly reversed on playback. But tape isn't perfect far from it. I preferred DBX for this reason.

@@Ramdileo_sys obviously a tape has to be encoded with Dolby b or Dolby C in order to be decoded if tape does not have noise reduction when recorded you definitely don't use it on playback or it will sound like crap saying that all Dolby in a perfect world would sound great but it's not a perfect world and every tape is different dbx does the best and makes it cassette sound almost as good as a CD but everything else you can hear the difference it's nowhere near what a CD is and if you think it cassette sounds as good as a CD then you don't have a very good CD player a cheap one may not sound that good but a good one will blow away anything analog can produce, anything. Some compact disc we're not mastered properly because they used the source tape that had been mixed and equalized for cassette or vinyl those CDs don't sound great but a properly mastered and recorded CD will blow the doors off of everything reel to reel cassette and vinyl.

Sony decks have the loudest motors. I had the KE300 deck, and it led me a merry dance with its slipping wind motor cog and its loud capstan motor. I eventually got a bottom-of-the-line Yamaha and it was an improvement.

What you were saying about early 80s decks being the best. I found a cheap Akai HX-1 from 1983 for $5. I was shocked how good it sounded. It only needed a speed adjustment. The caps, belts and motor are all in great shape. With a TDK SA tape (the manual says it was calibrated for that tape) it sounds better than I ever remember tapes sounding, even compared to friends' relatively high end decks.

Cassette decks can sound very good considering the limitations of analog. (Hiss, wow and flutter, compression ect) some like that sound. Myself i am more of an audio pureists and removing mechanical things from the audio chain and amplifying only by electrons flying off a red hot cathode in a glass bottle under a total vacuum and into giant speakers. Once you have heard such a system you really don't want to listen to anything else. As I write this I am listening to Al Di Meola play some acoustic music and it sounds like he is in the room with me. I personally have one of the finest cassette decks ever made and it sounds fantastic but still my cd player runs circles around it as does my digital music player (FLAC and uncompressed files) Something about the dynamics of music just building out of absolutely nothing to wall shaking and plate rattling around and then back to nothing and no sound. No hiss, no rumble. Fantastic. And not much power either. Super efficient speakers does this with only 40 watts per channel. (Mind you 40 tube watts is more like 150 solid state watts) I can only dream of what a tube amp with some real power could accomplish.

@@12voltvids I agree, cassette is an imperfect mechanical medium with many sources of potential distortion and colouration. There was no surprise about how quickly it died with the rise of CDs. My memories (as are probably most people's) of the medium were mostly from using cheap cassettes, recording and playback decks, and deteriorating sound quality over multiple playbacks and recordings. For pure sound quality, I'll take FLAC decoded by a great DAC any day. That said, this 37 year old tape deck and 25 year old cassette performs very, very well! If everyone used type II tapes on a good deck, CD may not have superceded tape so quickly. I think the biggest thing was the elimination of the strong dependence on quality of the playback/transport mechanism (excluding DAC and preamp!) and degraded duplication from the sound chain. Thanks for putting up these great chilled out repair videos. I've learned a bunch so far.

I've got the 820 QS version of this deck - I guess the internals are pretty much the same but it just has a fancy aluminium facia. Still going strong after 20 years despite the plastic clunky mechanism :) I think people forget that when these decks were built Sony wasn't really invested in cassette tape as they wanted minidisc to be an alternative. They kept tape alive though by adding Dolby S to several models. My 940 QS minidisc deck of the same era is built beautifully

The tape mechanism is from the early 90'. Sony used it on pretty much every tape they made, except the high-end ones. I own two Sony decks by my selfe with this exact mechanism. They just modified the PCB on the back. The mechanism itself is the standard auto-reverse one. In the video you can see the missing capstan pulley. On the auto-reverse deck it is present and will be driven by the same belt seen in the video. The only problems with this mechanism are the switches on top, they get corroded and the deck will detect wrong tape types. The other problem is a broken gear on almost every mechanism, on the second motor drive shaft. Years back I made some metal rings to repair this gears. Everything else is just a matter of fresh rubber. Belts and pinch rollers are available for this mechanism everywhere. There even exist better pinch rollers with a bronze bushing/core. I think it's one of the best cost effective mechanisms on the market. I am sure that's why Sony used it more or less unchanged for about a decade.

I’ve a collection of 90’s decks and that includes 3 x KA1ESA’s, K611S, and a K615S. The parts might be plastic but the quality of recordings is as close to as good as you can get for cassettes. The HX Pro & Dolby S combo is amazing. The higher end ES models with quartz tracking and other gimmicks give minimal improvements with a lot more problems.

Colour deficiency can be an issue for electronics with wire colours and resistor values, depending on severity. Was he completely colourblind? The majority of colour deficient people guys don't have complete absence of colour. Depending on what part of video game programming he's doing, it shouldn't be an issue at all, such as the game engine or character intelligence, networking, all that stuff. The art assets can matter, but there are pre-generated palettes one can use, and tables with RGB triplets for colour names so you can get quite far even in that regard.

I have a 3 head sony tc-k561s i went against my own advice and bought a unit that had been messed around with plenty of dry joints including the line ins and outs and i need to replace two nichicon caps that i think are smoothing caps for the psu slowly getting there and sorting out the previous owners mistakes ,it was £10 and i was trying to get a 3 head deck on the cheap so i got the hassle that went with it but it does sound better than most the decks i have allready .

Check for tape skew if you haven't returned the deck to the customer yet. My TC-KA1ESA (the US version of this deck) has the problem, likely due to the pinch roller being iffy and this deck's high torque pickup reel. You can usually detect it by the azimuth immediately going out of alignment after hitting play and its worse at the beginning of tapes due to little back tension on the supply reel. A very timely video as I have a service kit for my deck en-route and might have to oil that capstan motor. Mine is loud and add a subtle rumble to the audio output.

That motor looks like the Sankyo SHE2L type motor in my Onkyo TA-2058 which also went squeaky. I bought a replacement on eBay only to find out I got ripped off because it's a Chinese knockoff motor, and the speed drifts after like 10 plays.

Just a few weeks ago there was a report on one of our local news reports about a "last-mile" shipping company that alot of companies use to deliver packages to their customers and how this company and others like it are mishandling customers packages like deliberately throwing them down at the customers door, showing even one driver who deliberately throw a package out of the driverside window onto the customers driveway. And this of course was all taken from security cam footage from the customers property. Just goes to show that some people just don't care about anyone but themselves.

Great video, I learned a few tips from your videos. I am obsessed with what is called retro gear now. That direct drive capstan player was a gem that i watched you fix a few weeks ago i think it was a JVC. I like to fix stuff, usually takes me a few times, but i like learning how to make these things work again. Replaced a motor and belt in my Denon dn-t625, damned thing was a squeaker (capstan motor) and wouldn't change back to forward play after reversing without help lol. It had that same variable resistance Mabuchi motor.

Honestly man, the nak 700 from 1973 has a wow and flutter rating at 0.01, and I can tell you there is no flutter at all, when the tape peaks on this deck at like +5 on chrome, this machine handles them like a champ, no distortion, no type of flutter of frequencies, it really really rocks, the only problem is the rewind will go smooth and start clacking up, after some research, its most likely a bad clutch, the other problem I have is I wish there was knobs on the back for the calibration instead of a screw hole

Picked up a realistic sct-17 for dirt cheap thought I got a jem, got about 8 hours out of it before something burnt and I lost the left channel. The 17 seems to be a forgotten obscure model in the as I can't find a schematic for it. Found a service manual on ebay for more than I got it in but thats about it, ughh.. I know it's a cheapie but it was nice for a little while, lol

I am an Ebay Seller, and I Repair all the Electronics that need to be fixed. I don't think it was the output ground you solder bridged because the noise was evident on the meters (which would be situated pre-output.) I think it was some other solder reflow you did. In any case, it was a pleasure to watch you work. You rock out dude. Well done, regardless!!!

Open ground will throw plenty of noise around the board especially if it is a return line. Not just the output plugs.

I had the very same problem with a Denon cassette deck, it also had taken a whack, turned out to be a crack in the board causing the motor noise. I guessed that was the problem with your Sony, sounded like a earthing problem from the start.

My first real cassette deck (after the cheap Panasonic) was a JVC KD-55 and it had Super ANRS instead of dolby which was not compatible with dolby.

You didn't show how you did the PB speed adjustment as we only saw the freq on the screen. Can you quickly explain how this was done? I also have a Sony tape deck which does not have a potentiometer in the motor but instead somehow should auto calibrate the speed...

I think it is pretty obvious. The speed adjustment is the pot on the circuit board that the motor plugs into.

Hi, can you please explain the right position of the cam gear? I've bought it and have replaced the belts. It will play and ff, but rewind doesn't work. I've tried already different positions but can't figure it out. Thanx

Ive had multiple Sony ES decks on my bench and in my system over the years. Typically the sintered bearings run dry. Why? Because Sony has them spinning continuously.. on power up, ,whether there is a tape in the well or not, playing or not. Some turbine oil makes it better for about 5-10 years, longer if you shut the deck off when not in use so the motor isn't running the capstan belt all the time. The TCM 200 was one of the better transports Sony used on the ES units, before pot metal flywheels and plastic transports. This becomes evident in the built to a price philosophy that took over their later products. The all in one Dolby switch in lieu of a MPX filter switch is 3 more things that make the unit less reliable, not to mention the late to supper Dolby S inclusion, that had all but no support on the pre recorded cassette front. Worse yet, most mobile auto units didn't and never featured Dolby S. Compared to my most modest TC-K677ES, this unit is garbage, even with 3 heads, but has no closed loop capstan tape control or a substantial transport to support it. 2 motors on an ES cassette deck is an insult to real Sony ES gear. I enjoy your channel s a hifi fan but have no idea about fixing anything. ....although when it was picking up outside noise my first thought was a bad ground ...as turntables do this if not grounded properly.....hey I know a little after all ....

I have 2 Sony ES versions of this deck TC-KA-2ESA AND TC-KA-3ESA and you are right they are plastic and junk, I can't believe they want to sell these decks for prices similar to the great Nakamichis, Tandbergs and Revoxs!

Cassette decks were on their way out by 96 when this was made. Want a good cassette deck you need to look for one made between 82 and 86. Right when the cd was just getting going because everyone was renting and borrowing CDs to make mix tapes and the really good tape decks were around. By 86 the cheap dual decks were taking the wind out of the sails of high end units. That JVC i have originally sold in Canada for 1299.99. My technics rsm275 was a 700.00 deck. That was alot of money for a tape deck back then.

Also I'm kind of new to this and everything is still a learning curve I have this problem, with the rewind, and I engage the RW button will run smooth maybe like one or two seconds, then will start making a loud continuous clacking sound, it will stop for a second than happen again Fast forward here and there does the same thing but not as loud and not frequently Could this be a bad clutch? I bought this deck used with the box and manual, but I have been skeptical about opening it, I have opened my telefunken and some plastic junk don't dual well deck and have a fairly good understanding of most of the components Another issue is I cannot find any stereo shops n my area

All four of those plug-in boards are identical Dolby-S boards. Each one is only a single channel. So two for record and two for playback. The Dolby B/C chips are two channel and are on the main PCB. Service manual at freeservicemanuals.info/en/servicemanuals/viewmanual/Sony/TCKA1ESA/TCKE500S/

Any chance you can fix or point me to a fix for a tape deck that plays too fast? Tried speed adjustment, cleaned heads and capstan, it just plays everything way too fast. It is an old 1985 MCS deck.

Motor. That's the problem. The speed regulator in the motor failed and it is running full tilt.

And finally about what was all the big deal of the three heads cassette decks,one is for erasing so every typical deck has two.Listen directly from the recording tracks and so what from the moment that any malfuctions as tape speed or head azimuth adjustment will be noticeable in another good quality deck and not the same that the recording was made.

The idea behind three head design is that the record and play heads can be optimized for the job they do. Wider gap for record narrower gap for playback this increases frequency response for both the record and the play head. On a two-head deck some compromise has to be made however the best two head cassette decks were so close in terms of performance to three head that most people would never hear the difference. One drawback of three head design is tape to head contact and this is where dual caption is important as the leading caption provides extra tape tension to ensure good tape to head contact on three head designs. On single caption three head tape deck the pressure pad on the cassette may not provide as good tape to head contact.

I have this deck and it's ok. though you didn't show it if the tap the FF/Rew twice you get super fast FF/Rew, though it does sound like a jet engine. overall the deck sounds great if properly serviced.

Can motors that grind and slow down after a little while of use be fixed this way as on the video? I have a Denon horizontal loading tape player that I bought at goodwill and at first I thought there was nothing wrong with it other than a sticky tray, but all of a sudden it started making horrible grinding noises and it slow down half speed. I stopped it and next time I tried to play it only lasted a few minutes till it did the same thing. Wondering if I can take the motor apart like you did and lubricate and clean.

@@12voltvids Thanks, I will try anyway, since there is nothing to lose I guess, it is already messed up. I do have a Pioneer double cassette with some other issues that might have one of the decks motors (record side) in ok shape (the other one (play side) is doing the same as the Denon) to use as a replacement, so I will give it a try.

Well that was a good one, it did sound like an electrical motor brush noise so i was wrong too :-D So the sockets lost there earth and the case was just connected to the output cable screens. Super duper floating case antenna :-D Yes dave i do come up with some daft theorys, but that's the fun of remote guessing lol. Ahh the cat has come to inspect your work, seeing if it can point a claw at anything. And the final pisstake is the first advert was for a UPS delivery service :-D

Did you make an adjustment to the head at the beginning I think you did but not sure if you did or not! But I thought you moved the alignment screw!

No, i was verifying that the screw was still factory sealed and did not turn. They used 3bond at the factory. That green paint that was only available to factory service centers. That way if a unit came in they knew if it had been messed with. Some companies used red and others white. You would be amazed at how many people fiddled with the azimuth and then brought the tape deck in saying it didn't sound good under warranty. probably about the same number of people that get their phone wet and then try to claim that it just broke but on your phone there's a moisture sensor inside the headphone jack which tells the story it changes color when it gets wet. I remember one time telling a kid that his tape deck was not under warranty because he messed with the alignment and he had to pay to have it fixed he started crying at the service counter when he found that it was going to cost him $60 to have the alignment done. And then the excuse but it wasn't me it was my friend trying to make it sound better my response I don't care it's tampered with warranty is void too bad so sad.

This deck has Dolby type S in addition to types B and C. If I may ask, what's your opinion about Dolby S?

I have no opinion of Dolby s because i have never used it. No deck i own has it. I always used dbx myself.
