Hi there! I just wanted to say thanks man , for what? All your VCR repair videos as they have helped me learn alot. From watching these videos and seeing certain things that are similar in all models (Mode-encoder switch for one) i was able to fix up my old Samsung World Wide VCR that had me convinced the unit was destined for the trash ( Was randomly rewinding, ejecting and then stalling and when it would play the picture was full of artefacting) But, upon carefully removing the loader and head drum, checking the mode-encoder switch and finding it very oxidised i gave it a thorough clean. And, thanks to your videos too i saw how to adjust the tape alignment. Through doing all that the VCR works a treat now and im very glad because i nearly dropped a few hundred on a Panasonic NV-W1/W3 unit because i needed a multi-region VCR for transfers i do. So thanks very much for all your videos, they certainly helped me out!

(20:10) - There is no ethanol or methanol in isopropyl alcohol. It is a chemical in it's own right. Ethyl alcohol (Ethanol) with the addition of methyl alcohol (methanol) is is generally called *_methylated spirits_* or *_"denatured alcohol"_* and is usually dyed purple to indicate that it's toxic. Isopropyl alcohol, commonly called isopropanol is a colorless, flammable chemical compound (chemical formula CH3CHOHCH3) with a strong odor. As an isopropyl group linked to a hydroxyl group, it is the simplest example of a secondary alcohol, where the alcohol carbon atom is attached to two other carbon atoms. It is a structural isomer of 1-propanol and ethyl methyl ether. >

I actually like this cam mechanism. Plastic fantastic, but at least it doesn't need to move long arms and linkages with too much leverage and friction. It also isn't driven by a belt drive, that's prone to slip on the motor pulley once the cam mechanism gets jammed. That was a frequent failure mode of central cam gear type servo systems (I'm looking at you, Funai). The forced setup screen is just outrageous. Almost looks to me like a partial sabotage attempt from a worker who did the programming of it. Just as one possibility. BigClive did once a taste test of denaturated alc. His reaction was priceless.
@BoB4jjjjs4 жыл бұрын
that looks very like the sharp I fixed for the brother in law! It had the same fault, the gear on the side had gone out of place with everything else. As it was his and I didn't much like his constant wanting everything for nothing, I just made sure it was in the open position and prised the long plastic but out until it was fully unloaded. Strange thing is he never came back with it, it worked fine after that. I didn't much care for VCRs anyway, pain in the butt. But I was surprised he didn't reappear with it, maybe he thought I was a bit rough with it or it ran fine after that, I don't know I never asked. It was his VCR and no one was allowed to use it, selfish to the last!

I would like to know why you don't usually remove the head auto clean assembly. In time it could cause much pain, at least it did to my vcr. The heads almost got hit by the plastic arm. BTW awesome repair video.
@mrnmrn14 жыл бұрын
The plastic arm should not be able to hit the heads, even if the foam/felt/silicone rubber cleaning wheel is missing. Only the foam based head cleaners are really problematic. The ones that made of felt discs or silicone rubber, I used to clean them with IPA, and if they are worn, just flip them around.
@EclectikTronik3 жыл бұрын
They were pure marketing gimmickry. I always remove those as a matter of course and I don't know any technicians that leave them in there. The foam are indeed the worst, they can put sticky mess all over the drum. The other types just redeposit crap on the drum and can harden and wreck the heads. It is like using the same Q tip to clean your ears with every single day!

Nice one with the double bearing tower capstan. Haven't seen something like that since the Panasonic K mechanism and some '90s Sony. I certainly haven't seen this in a VCR this late: it was made in 2002. You can see it on the loading motor at 8:04 (0212 date code). I wonder who made this, maybe Funai? But I haven't seen this type of capstan in any Funai/Orion VCRs either. JVC maybe?

Is it the mode switch if a VCR loads a tape, then shuts down, while the guides do not retract, ( or the reels do not take up the slack) so you cannot take the tape out? The only way to get the tape free is take the top off and lift it off of the guides? It's a VCR DVD recorder combo.

(21:03) - That 99% isopropanol is perfect for making hand sanitizer. You simply dilute it to the desired strength with distilled water. >
@12voltvids4 жыл бұрын
I believe I said that. You need to dilute it as using it pure will not disinfect properly. It is the water that makes it work. I said 70% was not as good as a cleaner because of the water content.

Is denatured alcohol an acceptable alternative to 99% isopropyl for this application?
@12voltvids4 жыл бұрын
99% is denatured. Best to use 99% it evaporates without leaving anything behind. The 70% stuff the alcohol evaporates and leaves water behind which evaporates slower.
