Wish I could have seen more of the disassembly procedure, either the two hands were obscuring what the tool was doing, or the camera was pointed at another place and the detailed view of that operation were performed off camera. Beyond that, the problem analysis and repair was great to watch!!

You can buy any cheap Technics double deck from mid 90s. They are all bricked because a plastic gear but their motors are PERFECT. They are double speed, but with an external potentiometer you can set any speed you want. I guy asked me on boomboxery that he was having trouble with motors, and told him just to buy a parts deck. He grabbed a technics for only 7 pounds instead of paying 10 times more to thieves for just the motor itself. An this mid 90s motors were IMHO the finest ones in term of "perfection" (due to decades of experience). Very stable.

Yes this is what i normally do. I pick up cheap tape decks for about 10 and strip them for parts. Just the second hand shop has been closed for months due to covid.

I fixed the motor in my Nakamichi 1000 and that was very difficult because of the intricate mechanical construction of the power connectors but it was very educational (patience) and rewarding. Great job!

I have one of these. In Europe, it was sold as the CT-S820S. The AutoCal with manual bias fine adjustment is the best-working that I have ever encountered and the mechanism is amazingly smooth and silent. Its frequency response can go up to 28 kHz at +/- 3dB on a Type IV tape - I measured it myself, it's unbelievable. Unfortunately, my unit's Dolby S circuitry shows severe mistracking on the right channel in the low frequency range between 50 and 500Hz which makes it unusable for me. It also seems to have a grounding issue because on some settings, there seems to be an inaudible noise that overloads the level meters and goes away as soon as I touch the front shielding plate where the head cables plug into the main board. I'll probably have to recap the Dolby boards and add in some trimmers so these freakin' things can be adjusted on their playback level - something that Pioneer somehow refused to add to the design. The Kenwood KX-9050S (I also have one of these beauties) allows to adjust playback levels between Dolby Off/Dolby S iteratively, at least. Also, adjusting head azimuth is a real pain on its slanted mechanism, as well as cleaning because it sits so freakin' deep inside the deck. Also, I cannot for the love of god understand why Pioneer gave this deck such crude level meters. Even with the meter spreading, it isn't very useable to properly level a recording.

It's a great machine! As TAS said about its bigger, and even "badder" brother, the CT-93: (Paraphrased) "Pioneer perfected the cassette format just in time for the format's fall from widespread use, but it still provides access to pure analog sources of music". I have both, along with a couple of Dragons, an RX-505, a DR-1, and a BX-300. (Along with four of the Pioneer's venerable ancestor, the CT-F1250 and two CT-F1000's.) The Dolby S on the 93, 43 (and 95, although I don't own a 95, it's an even closer relation to this design than the 93) can, when making new recordings on good tape, put an analog cassette on par with the best digital. I'm changing the CT-43 door motor belt and this video was very helpful! Thanks for uploading this!

To be honest I appreciate your workaround fixes and have learned from the technology behind them. Transplanting a motor from a dual cassette deck is no worse than putting two resistors in series to achieve a required value. Some people obsess too much over 'originality'. Put simply, you can have a working cassette deck or an ornament. My 2c ;)

Hey there Dave.... as far as I remember these motors have a variable resistor built in the motor assembly. When you look at it from the back the of centre hole is the variable resistor that you can adjust.... btw great videos you do... watch them all the time... keep it up

There are different versions from different manufacturers. Some has no internal pot at all. Some has an internal pot for normal speed, and an A and B terminal for the high speed, which if you short, it goes full speed, or if you add an external pot, you can adjust the high speed, too. In some tape decks, the high speed was used just to make FF and REW faster, so they don't need any adjustment to that, the faster the better. Some had high speed dubbing (eew...), and they needed the speed control for the high speed, because the two decks must run at identical speed during high speed dubbing.

Seems like a perfectly suitable drop-in replacement to me. :) If we really wanted to get silly, cut a hole in the back for a standard pot with center detent in series with the cal pot inside to add a pitch control function. I'm slightly annoyed that they didn't use a quartz-locked direct drive motor in an apparently expensive dual-capstan machine, but then a lot of other people didn't either. At least the flywheels in that one are lumpy enough for a standard-issue capstan motor to meet the W&F spec that they wanted.

Excellent repair dave , there is nothing wrong with the way you fixed it. The motor will likely outlast the rest of the deck. I looked for motors a few weeks back, eather cheap muc-pukie or unused old ones sold by Pacific stereo with there label on the motor so you don't know the original brand. (not cheap). The old motors with the pass transistor nailed to the case. Beautifull cat, stunning eyes.

A good fix! It makes it quite clear you have to reuse materials for restoring old tape decks. i was just wondering about a detail. All that tape decks are advertised als super accurate and then you can replace such motor by a standard motor. And be aware, this is a Dolby S tape deck.

There are NOS Mabuchi and Sankyo 12V CCW 2400RPM tape deck motors on Aliexpress, and they are genuine, Both the internal and external pot version. I have bought about 10 of them in this year. I can send you links to the sellers in email if you are interested. The motors are in various conditions, most of them are perfect, some has some spots of corrosion, and I got one that arrived with a frozen shaft (although externally it wasn't badly corroded). All need to be disassembled for lubrication, as they are 25-30 years old. Two arrived with the terminal tab broken off of the PCB. They were in an envelope instead of a box. I complained to the seller with photos, she was ready to send replacements, but I suggested her not to send replacements separately, just add two extra motors for my next order. My next order happened about 2 or 3 months later, I asked for the two extra motors in the 'notes for the seller' field according to our agreement, and they added the 2 free motors, packed them very well in a box. Although one of those was the frozen one, I haven't complained that time, they are so cheap, and that one is probably repairable. Or if not, I can swap the board from it into one of the broken tab ones. It seems like their Mabuchis are better than their Sankyos. In the Sankyos, the brushes are just those thin phosphor-bronze sheet fingers, in the Mabuchis, it seems like they have an extra piece of (possibly silver alloy) contact material spot welded onto the bronze fingers where they come in contact with the commutator.

Just the best way to handle that cassette deck! Well done again, no hacking there, because I don't know if anyone could have that specific motor, and sourcing a NOS Japanese one is fantastic, something you normally pay a lot, done with an abandoned inherited ghetto blaster! You could have dozens of these motors, and absolutely none fitting or with the proper voltage, you had the kind of chance few have in service stations nowadays, most would have say can't be found, unavailable... Or at least ask for a similar machine to get parts. So with a Pioneer, that's not as easy as for very sought after brands or CD players, I would say fantastic, your customer is fairly lucky! Some would assume it's a curse from your new siamese assistant, maybe it's interest for this particular job was a sign of the gods? Anyway, I think he has adopted a good hooman, these cats have also Elite taste for that...

Good fix. Something I do after I work on something, especially if I make a mod like that, is write up a short description on a card and tape it to the inside of the case to let the next guy know what I did and what the mod is about. Sometimes the next guy is me, and it's a good reminder.

Yes, this an issue these days getting parts for Cassette decks, but there is hope I am working on a project to provide upgrade kits for the Pioneer CT F500, as there is so many about today. This will be in a form of a replacement built up circuit board, that can be install, that will provide new technology to a very old format. I am still testing parts of the circuit and making the required changers, it is not easy to do the software / electronics from the ground up. The good news is, it uses easy to get parts and the plan is to have it as kit set available next year some time, base on what time I have got to work on this project.

Why not trying to replace the dead motor control chip? A hole might be overcurrent or overvoltage, but also just age, so the rest could still be fine. Is there a dead reverse protection diode inside the motor?

I suspect there's a short circuit somewhere in the motor itself, maybe the bushes or commutator are worn, that blew the chip with over-current. But that could be proved by powering the motor directly without the speed regulator.

The LA5531 is still available as cheap NOS part (at least on eBay Germany), in such a case I always try to repair the motor first and would replace the IC. Less effort than searching for a complete motor in my opinion.

@@12voltvids Yes, the brushes seem worn out completely (and severed) at the contact point, they look way too short, barely reaching the commutator.. At that point, it was just a matter of time until they either shorted through the same commutator pad or one of them was dragged to the other side (catching in the commutator separation gaps), directly touching the other. Just one observation: when connecting a trimmer pot as a variable resistor it's always good practice to connect the vacant extremity to the cursor. It can be life saving if the cursor stops touching the track. Although here, infinite resistance seems reasonably safe.

What a hack job, but a brilliant repair. i have had to botch repair before not long after some Japanese made models just stopped making parts! Production run stops, spares stop! I just said "What a hack job" because you said people would say that ha ha ha. That was a lucky find that motor and I would have done the speed control the same way. One deck I had (not branded but a supermarket named machine) had a ten turn pot for a speed control. It was on the other side of the board, I wasn't looking for a ten turn control, I was just looking for a 1 cent skeleton pot. This deck never sounded right, but after I adjusted it it was very good for a ghetto blaster, very hard on the batteries though. Two hours, change the 10 batteries!!! Big batteries "D" cells.

There was a time when people would buy cars that have been totaled from an auction and take different cars and put them together and then re-licens them and sell them to someone as a rebuilt car and that practice went on for years they just finally shut that down now if you try to do that you have to have the car recertified and not stopped that but for years there was companies rebuilding cars from Rex and putting them back on the road

@@12voltvids Got that here to, just stopped you buying right offs for repair. It can still be done but it is not straight forward! Could buy electrical stuff from auctions, still can but not many around these days. 30 miles away is nearest, doesn't sound much, but on these roads takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours depending on traffic. One is quicker, but very busy auction and everyone pays over the odds. There used to be one close, in fact two, but both died and they stopped. Even the second hand market for bits has dried up. It hacks me off as you can't get bits for older stuff I want to fix, so I gave it up. np point. CB stuff can't be got for love nor money these day either, not that it was easy when they were popular anyway. TVs are just not worth the bother these days, get a black thing with a lot of legs, fit it and bang! 20 quid lost, I stopped when they started putting a lot of ICs in them, not worth the bother. Then of course shifting house a few times people don't know where you have gone so I don't get pestered so often to fix things. Nice in a way, but sometimes you need a push to do something in a workshop. I have a 10 amp power supply that I need to fix, but because it is mine I can't be bothered to clear out the workshop and fix it. I was studding for Radio Exam, but again, I started to do various jobs and never got back to that either. There is just not enough hours in the day. I need around 60 hours to do 12 hours of work as being disabled is a huge hinder to me. It was fine when I was fit and could walk up a mountain in an evening and go back over it to get to the car, sometimes it was very dark by the time I got back, but after a day at work it was nice to get away from people. Still had paperwork to do when I got home and then work early next day. No wonder I am burned out!

It's impossible to find those capstan motors in single quantities, and original from Japan are NLA. The deck works. Maybe, I would just solder the pot and resistor closer to the motor.

Because i don't know what causes the chip to fail. Could be a shored coil. Don't need to get married to an old tape deck. Change the moter and it is done.

One possibility is to take the wires for the commutator on the old motor, and hook them directly to the power in pins and reassemble. You can then test to make sure the motor works, and use a small DC motor speed controller external to it; there’s loads of empty space in there. Hell, you could probably wire up a CMOS 555, a few resistors (and a pot), capacitors, and a TIP120 NPN driver transistor as a cheap PWM motor speed controller for a few bucks and change! 😎

12voltvids - because I thought the whole point was that motors for those were hard to come by; someone else might not have a spare cassette player they can yank a motor out of. Besides, you had the motor open, might as well try; it didn’t look like the motor windings or commutator were bad. And it’s probably easier than replacing that IC that popped! 😀

@@williamsquires3070 motors are hard to come by these days, and if you were just fixing your own unit and it it burns out after a few hours play no big deal but when it it a client's unit that is a different situation. Especially when the client is paying about 200 in shipping to get it here and back. A new or used but good shape part is really the only option. These motors are available. I found a couple of them online but by the time they get here with the shipping they cost of the motor is more than i am charging for the repair. I found a suposidly new one for sale for 45.00 plus an extra 30 shipping then there will undoubtedly be broker fees added by DHL as it was coming from Japan.

12voltvids - of course, the problem is you could still get taken for a ride even if you can find one to buy; it could be a refurb/reman, or even a Chinese counterfeit, or the mounting holes aren’t lined up correctly, or it spins the wrong way. At least with the existing motor, you know it was the right one for the application, and it fit; it just needs a little TLC, maybe a bit of light oil for the bearings, clean the commutator bars (gently, please!), and it’ll be ready for years more service. Furthermore, I’ll bet this unit had been “serviced”, and I’ll bet someone hooked up the motor the wrong way, which popped the IC. By bypassing it, even if you hook the motor up the wrong way, the worse that’ll happen is that’ll spin the wrong way; easy enough fix. Even for a Siamese cat. Okay, joking there; I don’t think your feline companion has much interest in motor servicing. 😊

Do you see any benefits/drawbacks for those new digital/usb oscilloscopes compared to the old analog tube ones? Why is it always that a cat wants to step just right infront of you, especially on a keyboard when you are typing on it. And it emits a lot of static electricity. This one likes to sleep on my laptop keyboard. If I leave it open, she will find it and take a nap. As to the scope, I only use that DSO for speed measurements because it has a counter on board. For any type of complex analog waveforms, the Tektronix CRT scope is what I use.
