I found that the plumbers tape is the thing that made mine leak. Put in brand new plug and leak was gone..

I have the exact same water heater in my Bigfoot camper, one night during a wind storm the flames from the burner took out the controller board, a few hundred dollars later and no hot water for the two week trip. After getting home I cut a piece of tin and screwed it in place on the side wall between the board and the burner, but not long enough to cover the melt fuse. Haven’t had any problems in over six years now. Great info on water heater maintenance.

It seems like something always goes wrong as we are about to take a trip. Sorry that happened. The tin thing is a good idea! I may have to steal it 😀

Hot water tank calcium buildup clean-out is only needed once every 6 months or so in area's of heavy calcium content. 6 to 12 months is the normal time frame. Certainly never more than 2 years between cleanings. Too frequent cleaning will tend to wear out the reuseable plastic plug on the Atwood. Suberban tanks have an anode sacrificial rod attached to a scew-in plug. The plug is replaced when you change out the anode plug.

Thanks for the info. We were in a very high calcium content spot at the time. Did a number on our water filter. I do think you are right about once every 6 months in normal conditions.

We know it’s not the proper way to say it. But that’s how everyone here in Texas says it, and we play along. 🤠
