I feel like people are misusing the word "original." Baby Driver is not an original movie because of it's premise, but because of the way it is executed. In terms of execution, Baby Driver is an original film.

Critical Movie Fan The same with all his movies, Shaun it's a zombie movie, Hot Fuzz a buddy cop, Scott Pilgrim a rom com and World's End a alien invasion. We've see them before but they are (like you said) executed differently and that's why they work They aren't original, they are refreshing

There are only... what was it, like 36 Dramatic Situations? 36 stories that the human experience can capture, so a *truly original* story is pretty much impossible. People can merely find new and unique ways of telling the same stories. Western and Sci-Fi= Firefly. Samurai and Gangster = John Wick. Political/Ethical drama and Sci-Fi = District 9. Western and Horror= Bone Tomahawk.

Actually, you are misunderstanding the word 'original' in this context. They don't mean clever and interesting, they just mean that it isn't part of a franchise or an adaptation or a reboot, ie it is a first time story.

Yes. Kristian Harloff said that Baby Driver is what he think people thought "Drive" was GOING to be. The basic premise of a getaway driver who falls for a waitress and wants out the crime life is in both films but its how they are both executed in very different ways in both style and tone that make each their own unique experience.

There really aren't stories that haven't been told before, hell, I can find you multiple stories of a kid who was great at his craft and was involved with crime, but the point is, how are you going to present it, and how are you going to blend it and twist it in a way that hasn't been told before.

David Walliams actually spoke about it in an interview once. Apparently he was friends with both and sort of introduced them to each other but now they look at each other like that 😂 I think it may have been in a Spaced interview years ago.

Shaun of the Dead is fairly decent but I wouldn't say it's as good as Hot Fuzz; in a lot of ways, Shaun of the Dead is way darker and sadder than you might expect; for all the laughs I got watching it the first time, on repeated viewings it's astounding how absolutely straight the movie plays things; it's more like a drama with characters who happen to be funny. Scott Pilgrim is very well directed but the story isn't as good as the comic's story.

I think that 'original' is a concept in peoples head that sets most movies up for disappointment. It actually means 'good' and 'not part of a franchise'. ''Original' to me does not always equal success and usually the best things are riffs on ideas that already exist, so that the audience has something to compare it to. Like he said in the video, the director defines that genre, not the other way around. The appeal of 'original' work is hearing the unique voice of the director telling a story, not that it is 'original' in that no one had done it before. An issue is that people are more likely to go watch a film they know something about before going and seeing something 'original' so that is why a lot of film directors, especially successful indie ones, use genre as a way to bridging the gap between 'franchise' and 'original' works. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Double A Animations Yes when Peter Jackson stops being lazy it will happen. Originally, the second Tintin film was going to be based on Hergé's The Seven Crystal Ballsand Prisoners of the Sun.[124] However, screenwriter Anthony Horowitz later stated that those books would be the second sequel and another story would become the first sequel.[125] Peter Jackson announced that he would direct the sequel once he had finished The Hobbit trilogy.[124] Two years before The Secret of the Unicorn, Jackson mentioned that his favorite Tintin stories were The Seven Crystal Balls, Prisoners of the Sun, The Black Island, and The Calculus Affair, but he had not yet decided which stories would form the basis of the second film. He added "it would be great" to use Destination Moon and Explorers on the Moon for a third or fourth film in the series.[126] By the time The Secret of the Unicorn was released, Spielberg said the book that would form the sequel had been chosen and that the Thomson and Thompson detectives would "have a much bigger role".[127] The sequel would be produced by Spielberg and directed by Jackson.[127] Kathleen Kennedy said the script might be completed by February or March 2012 and motion-captured in summer 2012, so that the film would be on track to be released by Christmas 2014 or mid-2015.[128] In the months following the release of The Secret of the Unicorn, Spielberg revealed that a story outline for the sequel had been completed and that it was based on two books.[129] Horowitz tweeted that Professor Calculus would be introduced in the sequel.[130][131] During a press tour in Belgium for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Jackson said he intended to shoot performance-capture in 2013, aiming for a release date in 2015.[132] In March 2013, Spielberg said, "Don't hold me to it, but we're hoping the film will come out around Christmas-time in 2015. However, he added that he wanted to direct two New Zealand films before that.[134] In June 2015, Jamie Bell stated that the sequel was titled Tintin and the Temple of the Sun and that he hoped shooting would begin in early 2016 for a possible release by the end of 2017 or early 2018.[135] In November 2015, Horowitz stated that he was no longer working on the sequel, and did not know if it was still being made,[136] and in March 2016, he confirmed that the script he had written for the sequel was scrapped.[137] On 19 November 2015, Polygon announced that the sequel was titled The Adventures of Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun and that it would be released in December 2016.[138] On 18 March 2016, Scout.co.nz announced that Jackson would produce the sequel rather than direct, and that it would be released on 16 December. They also announced that a third Tintin film was in development, with Jackson serving as executive producer. Jamie Bell and Andy Serkis were reported to be reprising their roles in both the films,[139] but Serkis stated later in the month that he did not know when the sequel was going to enter production, despite claiming that Jackson was still interested in making it.[140] Spielberg later announced that Jackson was still attached to directing the sequel, and that it would enter work once Jackson completed another Amblin Partners/DreamWorks production

Also you can tell he doesn't have to be "original" to make good movies by looking at his casting. Three of his best (and few) films have the exact same two star actors: Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. However, using their amazing acting skills to his advantage he shapes them each into three unique characters. Plus, Baby Driver's nowhere near original, it just did it by far the best.

To be honest I think this is why the original trilogy of star wars is actually original, it tells the story of luke who goes from just learning about the force to ending it by becoming a jedi and seeing his father one last time, through out the trilogy him and the characters around him grow as people which in modern movies is cut down to around 2 hours. I think that star wars as a whole is probably one of the most original things out there even if episode 1 2 and 3 weren't the most amazing they still told a story which showed characters grow and relationships grow and it ultimately ended in a bad way due to anakins anger and naivety.

My opinion is, that baby driver was the biggest work of art of them all. He allways was clever with implementing music but in babydriver expecialy. Half of the movie is the soundtrack. Also the song lines match the situation perfectly. Its a musical with action, with cars, with love and drama, and without cringe or that unrealistic feel. Every step and move is like a dance. And the movie was above standart in allmost all other areas. Costume, cast, action, cars, and the freaking story. Its my absolute favorite, and im surprised it wasnt nominated for even 1 Oscar

Hot Fuzz is my fav, too. In part because I grew up watching it, but also because Edgar (and the actors) managed to balance small-town British humor with pop culture references, fast paced car chases and swans.

I liked Scott Pilgrim until I read the comic; the comic's ending is a lot better. Considering that they were making it as the comic was being completed though, the technical execution is stunning. In terms of overall story/execution balance, Hot Fuzz is the best.

My ranking: 1) Shaun Of The Dead (10/10) 2) Scott Pilgrim (10/10) 3) Baby Driver (9/10) 4) The Worlds End (9/10) 5) Hot Fuzz (8/10) That's just my personal list. While some may not agree with my Hot Fuzz rating, I still think the film is great. But I rather watch the other 4 films again before I watch Hot Fuzz again.

lol original films get a thesaurus nerd. Then of course if you treat movies or comics as a treat, it takes time for unique movies. Logan, Ant-Man and Deadpool are unique superhero movies. Hidden Figures handled unknown black women in NASA and had excellent drama. Peanuts was great slice of life with wonderful pacing for scenes. Try a movie every 3-6 months for good ideas. Comics have less requirements so I would say 1-2 months. Sometimes we need a cheap laugh. gonna watch TMNT out of the shadows but I am not expecting gold so I can enjoy it.
