She throws off the timing of the usual talkshow cues for people to laugh. It's a more organic, whole-grain form of call and response. A group that comprises a typical audience are expected to laugh on cue, and her subverting the timing leads to them waiting for their cue, so it gets drawn out in a way that can be interpreted as them not liking it. Molasses, not sugar.

Letterman is the only other host I've seen that instantly got her schtick and let her run with it. What was fascinating is that Dave knew every single time one of her stories was bullshit, and he either laughed and let her run with it, or just to let her know he was on to her, he would say 'No you didn't", chuckle and then let her go into her next crazy story. It was amazing watching the old consummate pro dance with the young quirky crazy girl like they were old friends. Dave was always great at recognizing the few of her caliber and instantly changing his style to set them up to go full throttle by asking them the right questions, being quiet, and then drawing out just a little bit more to keep them running with it. You could tell he was just so happy to sit back and watch those types do their thing. He was soooo much better than Leno.

Conan is just enjoying the situation, I feel a lot of other Talkshow hosts (except Colbert) feel threatened by her combo of being really intelligent sexy and not giving shit about pleasing anyone who does not get her
@personinaroom4 жыл бұрын
She feels so relatable. I can't really figure out if that's indicative of my own awkwardness or if she's just cleanly portraying social awkwardness in a way that most people can relate to. I feel like people tend to differ in their sensitivity to perceive awkwardness. Where some people are aware that social situations in themselves are/can be full of potentially awkward elements, others seem blind to it. Then again social awkwardness is a social construct and is limited to exist within and among people. The more social the person is, the more 'real' the interpersonal awkwardness. Whereas a person who is not as social can still find awkwardness in things that the rest of the group don't ascribe awkwardness to. For this reason I suppose there are a multitude of conceptions of awkwardness: 1. Intersubjective awkwardness: Something is awkward when a group collectively finds the situation embarrasing or unpleasant. 2. Subjective awkwardness: Whether or not something is awkward is solely determined in the eye of the beholder. And easily an infinity of other definitions . Can social awkwardness be said to be objective? I don't know where I'm going with this, but I guess I feel very awkward.
@NYALABLUE Жыл бұрын
ooo this is very interesting. i think in general (besides group situations where ppl think something is awkward because everyone around them deems it awkward) awkwardness is subjective kinda like embarrassment is. it’s only embarrassing if you feel embarrassed. imo, a situation is awkward only if you feel awkward. definitely agree w what you’re saying
