A 16-year-old schoolboy targeted in a racially motivated attack on an Auckland bus says he is now scared to catch public transport and “faces danger every single day”.
Jason, who hid his smashed teeth when he met with Transport Minister Simeon Brown this morning, said it meant a lot to him when an elderly man intervened during the Friday-morning attack.

@@a-k6575 outside my bedroom window I witnessed a guy punching his girlfriend repeatedly in the face, then he grabbed her by the hair and slammed her face into the open car door. I called the police. They never came. They didn't seem to believe me and almost implied I was lying. Why would anyone like about that ? Then a while later the same couple were inside arguing and I could hear her screaming every now and then. A woman across the road looked at me and mouthed the words I'll ring the police, and I slammed on their door yelling the police were coming and to leave her alone. There was silence, then she came to the door , bloody and sweaty, with years running down her face. I grabbed her and frog marched her all the way home while she struggled to go back home. As I left her residence he came round the side and started to approach us and I yelled NO several times like he was a dog lol and he backed off. If people did something, yes there is risk, but then you would stop that instance of rape and going forward people would also not be so daring if everyone "did something" and then in the future the attempted rape wouldn't happen.

New Zealand is far behind other developed nations when it comes to policing, charging, and punishing stalking, harassment, hate crimes, assaults, and that assault starting with "r" that KZbin doesn't allow you to mention in the comments. I currently live in Canada and have been blown away by the lack of tolerance of these crimes in this country compared to NZ. If this had happened in the city I currently live in, the police would have posted the woman's CCTV pictures all over TV and social media, and by now she would be in custody and facing some heavy charges. NZ has far to go when it comes to the 'Protect' bit of 'Serve & Protect'.

It's the same in Australia and the UK --- can't mention or show any description of the perpetrator except for what they were wearing, usually a black hoodie and jeans. They forget that people can change their clothes in about 10 seconds flat but they can't change their height, build, race and in some instances, nationality, very easily. The police and the media treat the general public as stupid fools.

if you don't live in NZ, how do you know for the fact that NZ is behind other nations? How do you know the female was not charged? There is privacy law in NZ, which dictates the bus company's action about releasing the footages which including others in the bus. Does Canada don't run on a basic law concept that no one is guilty until proven in court? I understand in this case, it may seem straight forward, but if that's the law says, what right has TV and social media had to expose people who may have been charged, but yet to be convicted? My believe is that your understanding of law if quite far behind to common New Zealanders who living in in NZ which you described as 'far behind other developed nations'.

In August 2022 I was assaulted on a bus in Wellington by a 16 year old boy after I asked him to start swearing. He started to viciously punch me and kick me. I was old enough to be this boy's father, but that didn't seem to bother him. I have a few years of martial arts experience, but decided not to retaliate, as I didn't want to get in legal trouble. I just kept my guard up. Something that I found very upsetting is that no one intervened, just like in this case with this young man. The driver didn't do anything in my case either. The boy continued to punch me and kick me after we got off the bus. He only stopped after his leg got really sore from all the kicking. I, on the other hand, had just some minor bruises. I then called the police, and, when they finally came, the boy ran off. They eventually found them, but they couldn't arrest him, as he was a minor. After a few months and a couple of Youth Justice Conferences, he was let go pretty without having to face any real consequences for his actions.

The person that inflicted this attack and harm on the boy should fall on their knees and beg forgiveness from this family, which I doubt they will have the courage to do. Failing an appeal for forgiveness (?) I hope the attacker has a good mirror to look into every day, of their remaining life and become fearful of the image of the 'beast' they see reflected back at themselves. (Male or Female). Unfortunately your comment is entirely inappropriate. Kiwis have built the whole infrastructure of this country and everything you benefit from. Our ancestors fought for Britain to protect our freedom and free speech, many lost their lives. Immigrants have done none of that. It's an immigrant's job to integrate and add value to a country that they CHOOSE to live and it's a privilege for an immigrant to be allowed to live in another country. Your comment is anti Kiwi and offensive. I speak myself as an immigrant to New Zealand. Check your superior attitude.

There should be a way of identifying the attacker. Looking forward to an update on this incident from the police or media.

The hidden side of New Zealand! This is definitely NOT the first time and sadly will NOT be the last time!!! It’s just the first time it has got media coverage! Migrants and minority communities have been targeted for years of all ages!!! This shouldn’t even be happening but the crazy thing is that their are still implicit bias/ small minded attitudes here in our own backyard that reveals how ignorant and lack of kindness within our so-called ‘multi-cultural society!!! Kia Kaha to this family and their community!!! If we do not stand against such behavior, we are on a slippery slope to destruction!!!
