You what? Buy something at Sothebys then sell it on ebay. What planet are you on?

It's actually been done many times by dealers I know, and visa versa. We've also sold things on eBay in the $40,000 to $110,000 range, that have appeared 6 months to a year later at Sotheby's and Christie's and failed to sell well below the amount it brought on eBay. There really are no hard and fast rules about where things can be bought and sold profitably. As for which is the better venue for a seller, it depends. Keep in mind, the auction houses ultimately take roughly 30% to 40% of the transaction in Buyer's Premiums and Sellers Commissions, which in the end are all absorbed by the seller in the net amount they get after a sale. A piece that sells for $100,000 including the Buyer's Premium at Sotheby's, nets the seller roughly $65,000 on the back end. On eBay, the seller would get $99,250 of the total as the MAX Commission is $750, all things to take into consideration. Best Peter
