I'd one of these as my day to day for about 6 or 7 years and it started cutting out all the time with some mysterious electrics issue that no mechanic could seem to get to the bottom of. It was a shame because the miles per gallon was better than any car I've had since. I was kind of broke at the time and the amount of times I got home from longer and longer distances with the petrol indicator on empty was fairly daft. I'd a pine green model with beige interior which I hadn't seen much at that point.

I've owned a 1.4 petrol SE for 18 years, and last year bought a 1.6 FSI. I didn't sell the 1.4 petrol though, as I knew I couldn't part with it while it remains reliable. The 1.6 FSI is very pokey, but problems with owners not using the high octane petrol can lead to some issues with 'sticky flaps' in the FSI engine. All that said, there's a stalwart community of folks who love these cars and still find them modern to own, to drive and to admire from afar.

Rumour has it that Audi dropped the A2 because they lost money on each one due to the construction. My wife has one (2002 1.4 petrol on 170,000 miles) and they do have their own issues. Door straps, cup holders breaking, dry joints in the door lock mechanisms, earth point issues but these are all easily sorted yourself. Yes the A pillar restricts vision slightly but you get used to it. It drives really well and has plenty of room for 4 adults of any size. Remove the rear seats and the false boot floor (5 minutes or less) and you have van like space in the rear. The design may not be to everyone's taste but I think they look great and has stood the test of time. It's a future classic that's cheap to run and doesn't rust.

I bought a 2004 A2 1.4 petrol S-line in 2012 and still drive it. It's done 235.000 now. It's got cruise control, climate control, half leather S-line sports seats and a Concert radio with added Xcarlink USB aux input. I do not recognize the bad handling at all. I can , although slightly understeered, really throw it around like a kart. The engine is the bottleneck, not the car. Mine has got a slightly lowered original S-line suspension, accompanied by a set of 16" Golf 4 BBS wheels with 195/45 rubber (Vredestein Quatrac 5) and I think that's the greatest treat you can give an A2. Doors are both cracking, it has an exhaust leak somewhere around the first flange and the paint has come partially off most dashboard buttons and switches. Also, the (black) roofliner has come loose in the back. Biggest disappointment is the engine, which just doesn't like it's life a lot. It uses a liter of 5w30 oil each 1500 to 2000 km (sump ventilation?), does not like to rev and just sounds tired, ticking and raw. Fuel consumption is ok, doing around 15 km per liter on average. Besides the regular maintenance, brake pads, wipers and tires, and a one time thermostat (major) coolant leak, it did not let me down. I really like this little, spacious, light, smart car. It's quite reliable for a VAG product, it's quite cheap to have and it does what it needs to. Think it will stay for a while...

Also, interior buttons are all weared out... Its not a matter of time or mileage. I had a volkswagen golf Mk3 with more than half a million km, and everything was perfect apart from normal usage replacements.... Also, if you go to the internet to find problems of it, you`ll find a lot of users tired of replacing or going nuts with problems with it...

Nonsense! 1/4 million miles on same drivetrain after 19 years can't say that's true. Plenty of abused cars out there that era no matter the make.

Very ugly and very expensive in its time. That's why it was failed in sales.

Ugly is subjective, but yeah, it was too expensive in both production and selling price.

Scientific research? Try any car from 20 years ago and compare with a well maintained A2. Modern crossover SUVs are far far worse to drive

Yes it was so ugly Ford took inspiration from it and almost copied it to produce the fiesta in 2002 which was a sales success , A2 was just to expensive , love the looks .
