Had my A2 from new and never found a suitable replacement. It's cheap and fun to drive, can be a van when the rear seats are removed and solid build. One of the last of the well made cars from the past era. Highly recomended, and surprisingly cheap 2nd hand in the UK compared to mainland Europe where they can see the quality, design and engineering for what it is.

I have had my 90tdI for over 10 years. It was breathed on by Stealth Engineering and it pushes out around 120hp. It's a little fire cracker and despite owning a Bentley, I am humbled every time I get in the A2. It's just so wonderfully packaged, it's quick, it's adaptable, it looks fresh and you can cover serious miles in one of these with little or no fatigue. Mine has the full Audi body kit and leather interior so it looks as good as it drives. My family have been warned that I will keep this car as long as I live, it's never going to be for sale.

Hello from Greece. I had an A2 1.4 euro -4 petrol with a panoramic roof. Excellent car. I sold it in 2009 and there are times when I miss it. It held everything, went everywhere and was very economical no matter how you drove it on the road. In the years I had it from 2002 to 2009 it never gave me any failure or damage. Although at that time there was also the same engine from the Polo 16v with 109 ps in the A2, it did not have to be included because of the aluminum and the lack of weight, it had just as good performance as the 74 ps. Nice tribute.

I’ve a 1.4 petrol A2, a very early one and even after 22 years people still comment on how modern it looks. I love the engineering and all of its little details. There’s some genuine thought went into making this car which I appreciate after owning an ‘inherited’ Honda. The engine isn’t as breathless as 75hp sounds. It still goes well in traffic and will quite smoothly do a long trip on the motorway. I think I’ll keep it forever to be honest.

I now have another 52 reg SE A2 TDI with pan roof, I use it every day for work, it does about 2000 miles a month, a bit noisy but a great car and great seating position, loads of torque when you need it. I must join one of the A2 Owners Club?

A beauty. You're spot on comparing it to the Concorde. Sad that its obvious quality didn't prevail over whatever Mercedes had to offer with the A-Class. It was expensive, but the owner paid for quality and high tech - instead of just paying similar money for the badge and bad quality in the Merc.

Just got one with several faultcodes. I managed to reduce them from seven down to one (misfires) by cleaning the whole air- intake incl. the exhaust recycle valve and a new catalyser. Intake manifold flap is not broken, but I think, its valve is dead. Furtheron I'll replace this valve and both of the gasoline filters. I hope not to have to change the injectors, because they are hidden in the intake manifold, which ist hell to dimantle.

Two garages couldn't diagnose it and neither could VW themselves as I even took it there. :(

On your comment about scrap prices, I've compared my 2005 A2 with my 2002 Mk1 Focus. I got quotes from Charles Trent. For the A2, £207, and for the Focus - £235. I also expected the Aluminium A2 to be worth more as scrap, but it seems it isn't. Thankfully, I'm not looking to scrap either car anyway!
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 11 ай бұрын
Just because they offer that doesn’t mean it’s worth that 😉
@christhesnaildriver
@christhesnaildriver 11 ай бұрын
@@volkswizard Completely agree, and maybe (hopefully) the lower scrap value will help keep more of these cars on the road! It only gives an indication of what they value the metal (scrap price) at, plus what they can recover in parts sales where there is demand. I know Trents are very selective about what they remove to sell, based on inventory and demand. Mostly, I was expecting Aluminium to command a higher price, but then again, scrap value is largely weight based and the A2 is quite light. Scrap prices have fallen in the last couple months. In March, they offered £50 more (285) for the Focus when I was (briefly) considering scrapping it due to it now needing quite a bit of investment to get back on the road.

I have an 1.2 TDI as my daily commuter car and drive it 15 miles to work and back - perfect for that purpose! :-) On the Autobahn not so much, it's pretty underpowered compared to todays cars, when even a base model Golf seemingly can accelerate like a GTI from back then... But overall, I can't imagine the anger one must have to fill up your tank at the current prices at the fuel stations, that makes it worth it. :-D Thanks for the educational, informative content, good sir! :-)

I don't know, obviously, but when you were mentioning that thing about it not having the turbo would it take a small one if someone was that way inclined not to give it the full mad power treatment, but for that little something in line with a more modern small car? Always thought the A2 was a car far too ahead of its time. We were actually seriously considering a used A2 a while ago, but ended up with (funnily enough, given you mentioned it) a VW Up! , both a 75hp High Up! then a Beats Up! TSi. Totally agree that it rolled far too much, which was a shame as it was a great engine. I can see where you're coming from with the idea of an EV conversion of an A2 - out of any older car, I'd struggle to think of a more suitable candidate!

The annoying thing about it was that the fuel economy never met what it was meant to do. We had a A2 90tdi and at the same time had a b5.5 Passat estate pd130 highline. On long ish runs (Redditch to Nantwich) the Passat was better on fuel by a few mpg was only 4-8mpg but the Passat by far was the more comfortable faster and better spec'ed car.

@@beautgrainger147 the b5.5 was basically getting 50mpg all the time or better when driven sensibly. The b8 190 I have now does 750-800 miles per tank in summer but only 550-600 in the winter (lots of short runs where it doesn't get to temperature until I'm back home and turning the engine off - 4 mile round trip to drop the kids off the 800/600 will mostly be long runs (150+mile runs Manchester to London for example). My dad had the Passat before me, he use to get 55-65npg out of it on hour plus runs, I think I only got 63 out of it and I was trying. I also had a b5 when I worked at Amtrak that produced the same mpg as the highline. One of my colleagues had a 130 in another VW (about the size of a Jetta but I don't remember the name of it), he could only get 35mpg out of that, but then he drove very differently to me and got several telling off's from our transport manager)

Interesting you find the diesels noisy. They are of course, however I find the noisy to be quite a pleasant thrum rather than an outright assault on the ears. Having said that - Mine is a TDi90 and I have installed a six speed from a later VAG 1.6 CAYC engine in mine and it drops the revs right down to 2000 at 70mph which massively helps on longer journeys and totally transforms the car. I too would love to see someone convert one to electric power, although for me I’d need around 400 usable miles of range from a single charge, which is asking a lot.

Hello, happy owner of an Audi A2 with 1.6 FSI engine, I have a question? Do you have an Audi A2 with a 1.6 FSI engine, does the radiator fan turn on correctly in your Auadi A2 1.6 FSI ? I am asking because in my Audi A2 with 1.6 FSI engine the fan won't turn on. the top water hose is hot and the bottom one is cold, I don't know where the problem is ? The thermostat in the Audi A2 1.6 FSI engine is electronically controlled. and the thermostat only opens at 109 degrees.

A highly engineered and premium small car. They were known to be very expensive to repair, which was also the Achilles heel of the aluminium Jag XJ6. This meant that many A2s were written off before their time. Galvanised steel bodies still last longer than virtually all other components on a car and it is the accumulated deterioration of those that cause a heavily depreciated vehicle to be scrapped, rather than corroded body work on modern galvanised cars. I guess that the A2 was guilty of being just a little bit too clever.

I got a A2 ProLine with the 1.4 petrol engine. Got the skylight (panoramaroof), red leather seats and accents in the doors. I'm going to turbocharge the engine, as far as i know it'll be the only 1.4 turbocharged Audi A2 on the road today.

You are going to be replacing the 1.4 pretty soon if you just a put a turbo on it. What will you do with the magneti marelli ecu? Marelli ecus are PITA to work with and not many professional will even touch them. Just throw the old 1.4 16v in to the lake and put some 1.4tsi with timing belt there instead.

@@colinvos7304 you need to change bigger injectors and throttle body if you're willing to gain power with turbo, then the ecu definitely needs to be programmed, or use some aftermarket engine control like maxxecu or megasquirt etc. There's so many things to be considered, lots of work and maybe you can gain max 15-20hp with the turbo setup so I don't think it's worth it. Replacing the engine would be cheaper and wiser in the long run. I replaced the 1.4 16v AUA in my -02 A2 with a 1.6 16v BCB engine from a VW Bora. Still running with the original 1.4 ECU and injectors&throttlebody, but it runs great. I need to buy a Vag-tacho so I can replace the ECU, then with it's own ECU, injectors and throttlebody it should have that approx. 30hp more than the original 1.4 16v.

Amazing sandwich chassis like my B200 Turbo - my battery is in drivers footwell under floor so these were certainly meant to be electric. A2 didn’t make it down under as economics and lack of petrol auto counted against it plus Audi were selling every A3 it could land here at the time as we had 1.6, 1.8T and 2.0 FSI here with auto trans 🤪- I hope you can recommence selling to public as trade only may mean fast turnover without time to review for channel

A2 design has something in common with Citroën Xsara Picasso. They're both MPVs but a2 has the early 2000s audi design style and there are lines and shapes you can see for example in a4 b6 avant. So A2 is like a dwarf A4 avant 😁
