I just tackled this job today. Had the same problem as you, broken sending unit. A word of advice is you should always use a brass punch when hamming the retaining ring closed because a regular metal screw driver can cause a spark. Good video

Thanks brother, been having the exact same fuel gauge issue for almost a year now and couldn't figure out why until I found this. I've been putting it off thinking it was the pump itself. Saw how easy it was, went and pulled one out of a B6 that looks to be in working condition, and hope to have my problem finally resolved by the end of the week.

Good luck! I recall the sedan has 1 level sending unit, the wagon has 2 sending units. On the wagon, the fuel pump assembly on the other side (not pictured in this video) has the second level sender built into it. Beware you may need to do both if not resolved after doing the one pictured here in the video.

Isn't there supposed to connect a fuel transfer siphon pump to the bottom of the sending unit that connects to the pump on the opposite side?

I guess we are the only ones who noticed that he did not connect the lower transfer pipe. The pipe will start to rattle in the tank especially when low on fuel.

⁠@@sombongi And the orange transfer siphon will snag on the sender unit floating arm giving a false fuel reading - so back where you started!!

this just happened to my 2017 A6. You mentioned there is pressure valve that crushes the tank and causes it to break. Is that the vapor canister? I was having problems filling the tank right before this happened.

So a scantool wont tell which side is defective? Replace the left side first and if it doesnt fix the problem, do the right also? Are the sensors the same for both sides, so you buy 2 and return one if necessary? Thanks

Thanks Bimmer Zeit for another great video. Would you recommend a backyard hack, like myself, disconnect the battery prior to disconnecting the sender wire (on the chance that the access hatch seal is not 100%), and, using a brass drift to strike the locking ring for the same reason??

Rohan Wilson sure, disconnecting the battery couldn’t hurt! But the brass drift is a good idea. Then again, the steel lock ring tool is the same material as a screwdriver 🤷🏼‍♂️

I’m having trouble with my A5 , keeps flashing up Tank Malfunction, Contact workshop. I sourced the parts on eBay reconditioned as direct from Audi is nearly £500 in the UK but I been told by Audi that A5 has 2 of these sender as it’s a larger flatter tank?? I now have to have it plugged in to find out which one is causing the problem and hopefully can be replaced as easy as you did it. Ps, you never said if this video solved your issue and it worked afterwards. Thanks

2009 audi a4 quattro. Leaking gas under driver side passenger seat. The fuel pump is not leaking. The filler hose is not leaking but you can see gas under the car on the bottom of the tank. Any ideas? Thank you for the video.

2014 A4 has 2 connectors and a L shape pipe that hooks up to the plastic cover. That pipe does not come off

If its Quattro there are always 2 floats, one on each side, one attached to the actual pump, one quick check to see if the float is bad is to measure the resistance of the 2 prongs for the level senders, i believe the resistance should be 300ohm empty and 50ohm full, this would say if the problem is at the sending units

@@robertficek7586 my a4 b8 avant suffers the same issue except mine doesn’t read below 3/4 of a tank. when i went to remove my backseat, there is seems to b only one floats (atleast that is visible from under the seat) unlike in this video there is two, both on each side of the car. do you think i should also change my fuel sender or any recommendations would be well appreciated

@BPbusterYoAss I think the avant is different that the pump sending unit is in the back wagon/ trunk area, I'm not sure if there is a second unit for the avant. One thing to check is the resistance of the float prongs, check the resistance when it's full tank, 3/4 tank 1/2 tank and near empty. This could confirm a bad float sender and not something else. They are known to go south sometimes but not that common. If the float is bad I would say it makes sense to just change the entire pump assembly, it's the same work removing the entire pump and float. Hope that can help

It unlikely its only reading a 2 prong variable resistor to measure tank level, it would show the wrong fuel level at the gauge for a start, with that said a short circuit or lost ground anywhere could cause weird gremlins at the ecu and even spill into unrelated systems.

I ran out of fuel and broke down with a quarter tank showing on the gauge, my road side assistance guy added fuel and removed warning lights, then the oil warning light came on but oil level was full. About 30 mins later that warning light went away and didn't come back. Now my fuel consumption is really bad. Range is dropping 5 miles for every mile. I don't know what's going on. (2008 audi a4 1.8 tfsi)

Chris Dafurr probably a bad fuel level sending unit. Sedans May only have one, part of the entire fuel pump assembly. That’s my guess

@@raullopez226 more than likely a clog in the syphon pump hose that goes to the main sending unit. You have to get the primary tank to be empty and you can access that side.

Fuel pump assembly. The sedan has just a fuel pump I believe, while the wagon has a secondary fuel level float along with the fuel pump assembly on the other side. If I recall correctly. Not an Audi guy!

@@BIMMERZEITT wagon has a syphon pump, run it out of gas, should be 1/4 left when it runs out and you can access that side of the tank.
