@@ORileysAutos Sorry the late reply Jimmy as i have just come out of Hospital - long story - the car has been a nightmare i would say because i have a long term illness but rather the what you run into daily, people who do bad jobs on peoples cars. Before i became semi crippled i used to maintain all my cars. Over the years i have been restoring the car back to OEM spec, replacing parts, after watching others describe the parts that go around the 100k mark. The DPF had flagged an issue, i just want it to be done another one of the list of things to be done!

Interestingly my 2017 Passat with 200k on it registers this code for the last 80k or so miles. It doesn’t put an engine light on or is the running and performance affected. The only reason i know is when i put the diagnostic on it.

If I only had the equipment for this procedure... it would save me from a £4450 disaster. That's how much it costs to track and replace the EGR cooler in Norway after taking the car to 3 workshops. Thanks for the video. I hope Audi takes this information and apply it in the future because they have designed a terrible emission control system on these Euro6 diesel engines by bolting the EGR cooler behind the DPF.

@ORileysAutos Understood. I guess it depends on the condition of the car. By the way, Audi has come up with an open recall campaign regarding the p2002 fault code some time ago. I believe they install two software packages for the emissions control system on every Euro 6 diesel, but I am not sure whether they cover EGR replacement within this campaign.

Jimmy this is very interesting, I have question / observation, the EGR cooler under normal conditions has with the EGR open a route to the induction system, when its blocked with the adblue crystalisation and you are putting the cleaner ( dpf cleeaner with water) in through the turbo temp sender hole, is there not a risk of the liquid going into the engine as it frees out ?
@ORileysAutos
@ORileysAutos Жыл бұрын
There is a risk but I believe the EGR only opens above 1800 rpm. Its okay for some to get through as long as its not enough to hydrolock the engine. You could loosen the glow plugs to allow some pressure out

@@ORileysAutos I got the engine carbon cleaned as a first cheaper option, in hindsight I should have used yourselves! They didn’t add any liquid as the DPF was fine! Hi jimmy I have the exact same issue on a customers car next Thursday. My original plan was to use the launch fluid, clean out the dpf. However, it seems that most places/mechanics replace this low pressure egr cooler. Apparently it’s not easy to unblock because the cleaning fluid isn’t pushed through the egr at high pressure? Anyway, do you find this method works on the egr coolers? Otherwise I need to order a replacement, Thank you!

@@JDMCARSCIVIC this is what I have been told also - I discussed it with the customer and told him I would use a similar method to jimmys in the video. He said he wanted the cooler replaced. I should have pushed him to try this method first …
@ORileysAutos
@ORileysAutos Жыл бұрын
I've tried to look at the design as best as possible without dismantling it. From what I see the cooler is attached directly after the dpf so the egr would not need to open to get fluid into the cooler. I've done at least 8 with this method before making a video. I didn't want to video the first one as if it wasn't successful over time it would be wasting people's time. I done some at idle and some while holding revs
@ttatimbo5830
@ttatimbo5830 Жыл бұрын
@@ORileysAutos well if you are having success with this method then that’s great news. Interesting that you need several shots of the fluid in different places along the system for it to work, but it’s far easier and cheaper than replacing the cooler. I think if I had seen this video a week ago I wouldn’t have ordered the egr cooler from Audi, which is expensive and non returnable…. Although I could sell it. The customer has already agreed to the quote, and been told by several other mechanics that the egr cooler is the issue, so that’s good. In future I will Definately use the fluid clean method. Thank you for the information! Always good to share info - as I’m sure you are aware, the motor trade used to be about keeping your repair methods to yourself. I think people have learned now that there are plenty of cars and work to go around and share their info. I did an eco blue with a failed wet belt yesterday which is my first failed wet belt job. I couldn’t have done it without the help of other mechanics and their information. The look on the owners face (and mine) when it finally started up was priceless! 👍🏼

This is the closest to my car, a 2015 3l a6 quattro, crte engine. it has exceeded the 226,630km advised in the live data reading for replacement of the particulate filter. It regenerates relatively frequently, every 1500 to 2000 km. There are no faults stored or warnings, it runs well, better mpg just after a regen, which I know occurs when the mpg drops and there's a strong hot exhaust smell when I stop, and fans stay on for a goid while. What should I consider getting done. Is egr cooler an issue on 3l. Does the dpf/catalyst assembly actually need replacing, or will cleaning be enough to prevent future problems. I'm in Ireland btw, so can't avail of your service, but would appreciate advice.

If you don't keep the engine running while injecting the fluid (4 litres?) so that it becomes a pool of liquid which soaks the DPF, is it still possible to start the engine and push with exhaust gases out the liquid or can the engine stall?

@@ORileysAutos Hi. Instead of using on-car (installed DPF) cleaning fluid can you use a small amount, 0.5-1 litre, of DPF flushing/cleaning fluid intended for off-car cleaning (removed DPF) in maybe for example emergency situation or will the car not tolerate it at all, can hydraulic locking etc be avoided if EGR valve is closed etc?Thank you.

Given the number of issues these emission control systems are causing you'd think a routine service would routinely clean the filters etc. particularly on those vehicles doing lots of short journeys following a cold start.

Jimmy, you mentioned the EGR's tend to get plugged up with soot. my understanding from service procedures to clean the EGR without removing it, it is necessary to run the DPF cleaning fluid into the exhaust system prior to the inlet of the EGR cooler to get enough flow through it to do a good cleaning. the EGR is generally closed during idle, so it suggested you have to run it at about 1800 RPM ? for the EGR to open and the fluid to pass through. i'm guessing the best way is to monitor the EGR duty cycle while injecting the cleaning fluid to make sure it will circulate through. in your experience, would that be the best way to clean an EGR without removing it? that way the cleaner would pass through the cooler and the EGR itself.
@ORileysAutos
@ORileysAutos Жыл бұрын
From what I can see the EGR valve is after the cooler so it would not need to open to get fluid intonthe cooler?
@JustMe-Dude
@JustMe-Dude Жыл бұрын
@@ORileysAutos if the egr valve is closed, there is no flow through the cooler or the egr valve. all the exhaust just goes out the tail pipe. it requires a differential pressure between the exhaust and the intake that only occurs when the egr valve is open. i'm pretty sure the EGR valve doesn't open at idle.
@ORileysAutos

@Just Me yes we do 4 stages on these vehicles some at idle and some at 2000 rpm. It seems to have worked well on the previous 8 vehicles. I know its not going to be perfect but people are looking for a reasonable way to clear this fault that doesn't involve 2 days labour 👍🏻
@JustMe-Dude
@JustMe-Dude Жыл бұрын
@@ORileysAutos sorry I should've been more clear with my question. I wasn't thinking of this particular vehicle, but rather more of a generic question for all coolers and EGR's. So it looks like because this is a four stage cleaning one of the stages includes high idle with EGR open and does clean out the cooler as well. I get it now. Apparently the instruction theory does work and you're having good results with the cooler and EGR, so it sounds like my question is answered, thank you
@spawntohell
@spawntohell Жыл бұрын
I am pretty sure you do not want egr open while you use fluid cleaning as that would end up in the intake if is open. What clogges up is the egr cooler on these, as the egr cooler is actually in the dpf for most part before gases reach the actual egr. The egr on this has a differential pressure sensor as the dpf for this reason. So he is very right in what he is doing. Cleansing on this particular system is tricky as he explained in other videos as the point were you can apply the fluid is close to turbo and can slip inside exhaust manifold inside the engine... So it can go very wrong from two ends getting fluid in intake if egr flap is open or through turbo in exhaust either way you do not want that liquid in combustion chamber.
