LOL i love how MPG is always in the first place... no one considers that the diesel costs hell lot more in the start, and is ALOT more expensive to maintain.. not to mention that this is no old school VAG ultra reliable diesel engine from the 90's..

I like both very much and yes the buyers for both will be different. I did have a e46 330i before, that was great fun, but its consumption wasn't. The a7 tdi we have isn't as fun, but on the motorway that torque just makes the ride so effortless. So in reality id have a petrol and diesel car, but the petrol for a weekend car and the diesel for my cruise to work or the mountains. But either way, you can't go wrong with the tfsi or the Bitdi.

I've got an A6 Bi-turbo avant and it is awesomely quick, as well as having lots of tech to play with. The engine note is actually lovely (though it is helped by an actuator in the exhaust) and heads turn when you drive down the road!

Purely fun related point. It is not fun seeing your car sitting at 23 mpg, it is never fun filling up your car. What is very fun is torque induced country road/motorway overtake :)

I can imagine sitting in my Audi R8 (or my Porsche Cayman, or my ageing XKR), feeling smug, and getting burnt at the lights by a Large diesel family car. This car is a real game changer. Can we call most dedicated sports cars or any hot hatch fast now?

Brilliant review! This guy is one of the best automotive journalists out there. The only thing I would've liked was more talk about the engine and torque on that diesel, seeing that that was what the video was primarily about .

Great stuff like always! Always loved Audi's. My dad had a 2005 A6 3.0 S line diesel and now he has a 2006 Q7 4.2 and it accelerates like a beast! Cant image what this thing does with almost the same amount of horsepower and lighter on the wheels

Very good comparison. Good to see something relevant and well researched and not just 2 random cars pitched head 2 head. So it looks like is new biTdi is faster or as quick as than the main rival BMW 535D and also the quick petrol S4 and S5 models! Pretty impressive from Audi.

I've been searching for a proper review of the 3.0 Bi-TDI. Now i found it. Only one thing is missing - drive them fast on a track and tell us if the torque vectoring differential works better with the diesel. (because there is more torque for vectoring :D ) Subbed.

You have a good point, but still, the engine is underdeveloped, it's a "cheap" engine... The torque is higher, but the power should be more than 300hp for a forced induction engine, for sure it runs out of boost in higher rpm... Audi has the knolodge to do much better... look at the new 4.0 V8, it's a powerhouse!

LOL, in a few years, you'll see this car on Wheeler Dealers, being sold for £2k. Ed will be talking about how back in the day, this car had amazing technology, but none of it works now and he's got to fix it all. To buy this part from an Audi dealer is £10,000, but I managed to pick up one from the scrap yard for 52 pence ;o)

NO! Diesels are the most dependable internal combustion engines. They are used in tanks, submarines, industrial machines (also agricultural), most trucks, and almost all electrical generators for surges are diesel engines. They can run in biodiesel, auto-diesel and jet fuel (A1). The only thing that's more dependable than diesel are electric motors.

Yeah, that's probably true. The real issue is the fact that anything that poses a threat to money-making petrol monopolies is immediately managed. So in the U.S., our diesel is vastly more expensive than regular gas, and our electric cars are archaic compared to other countries.

Its not underdeveloped, its overengineered in every single way, but for quality, refinement and longevity, not for maximum power. You know...how much power an engine produces is not a show of its quality.

Who won the 24 hours of le mans this year (and every year since 2006)? Diesels. Audi diesels. 3rd gen. diesels only share the fuel with tractor engines. A proper modern diesel sounds way closer to a petrol engine than a tractor engine, and revs at least to 5000 rpm, still slow compared to petrol engines but reasonable if you consider you get full torque at 2000. Don't like them? Don't buy them! But please use your brain.

unfortunate diesels are a bit more complicated engines, more frail and on the long run, even if you pay less for the diesel, you have other repair expenses and more problems might occur.

may i just ask ; why say the way to fun is bitrubo D ? way to fun is RS 6;) i know they are sold on the same segments; but either you hate diesel and cant pay for a RS6 or S6 and get a tfsi ; or you have no knoloedge at all of history and car s that you end up driving a lorry. fun is not only in performance. reving till past where the diesels go or sometime more fun in cars with less power. good chanel; but be carefull to not push things to far. i drive an M3 ; if i wanted eco id have a 330d

Why would a car company care if you wanted a diesel or gas car? Once they sell you the car and get your money their job is done. Diesel was really cheap for decades most times 50% less than gas but it shot up the last decade due to more people buying diesel vehicles.
