Just to clarify, a crank sensor not only reads rpm, it also is the trigger for the ignition sequence to start. When voltage is applied to the sensor a magnetic field is created. The trigger wheel is on the crank, on this wheel there will be a gap / window, when the magnetic field is interupted hence the window on the wheel as the crank rotates, it will fire #1 cylinder then the following fire order. This is why the car will not start without a crank sensor working. The ECM does not know when to start the fire sequence. The ECM also references the crank sensor against the cam position sensors, this is one of the wayd the ECM knows the car is out of time and will throw a code for it.

Honestly straight facts!!!! At least someone understands that this car is reliable!! But mainly a lot of people out in this world dont know how to take care of a car. Most people dont even check the fluids on weekly/ daily basis whem they should if they have an oil leak or leak of any sort. Like a lot of people they dont do anything about the leaks and things get worse and worse. Then when the car blows they end up blaming it on the car when really it was the owners fault of not taking care of what needed to be taken care of. I personally own a B5 A4 2001 and yeah i have done a lot of maintenance stuff on it to make it reliable amd here i am still with the same car after 2 years of ownership, Tuned running 22psi on my ko4 whereas i see the rest of my friends continuously swapping out cars every couple months. I hate it when people talk negatively on german cars.

I absolutely agree! I have the 2000 B5 S4 as my daily and whenever I go to car meets or talk to people about my car, they're like yeah it's nice but how reliable is it? My answer: extremely! It had a lot of problems when I bought it from the previous owner because they didn't take care of it; so for the first year it felt more like I had a project car but my car has never left me stranded on its own. I was stranded one time after my CATs caught fire because I procrastinated about getting my oxygen sensors replaced and kept deleting the codes for weeks rather than just buying the parts (again!) and changing them. I replaced those oxygen sensors so many times that I was frustrated and said, I'm not doing this again. And it almost cost me my car. Ever since then, I've been very proactive about weekly/monthly maintenance, including preventative work and I haven't had a check engine light in almost 2 years.
@photonpilot__3 жыл бұрын
Yes. 90% if the horror stories we hear about german cars are caused by owner neglect. For example, I own a BMW with an N55 engine. BMWs recommend service interval for the oil is 15k. This is so things break due to sludge build-up and you take your car to the dealer. You can avoid all the issues that come with that by following a good 4-6k oil change interval. A lot of the issues people have with German cars are just due to them not knowing the need preventative maintenance and just waiting for parts to fail, or as stated earlier just straight up neglecting them.

My Stage 2 18 psi B5 S4 breaks every other week but I still love it, it also has over 200k but has never left me on the side of the road and I drive it daily. Put this way if you have some free time buy a B5 S4 and you'll have zero free time and become a mechanic real quick, 50% of that time is spent upgrading 50% on maintenance you will also learn alot and bleed alot. 😆 also that crank sensor also sends a signal to your speedo so If it's jumping around like crazy not reading correctly It's your crank sensor/speed sensor not the cluster like so many have said in the past.

People call them unreliable because of the turbos. Back when I had mine 15 years ago I had to buy new turbos every 20,000-25,000 miles. It's a twin turbo car so if only one turbo goes you still have to buy 2 turbos. These cars are like the 300zxTT you have to pull the engine to replace the turbos while your in there you might as well change your timing belt & water pump since there so easy to get to with the engine out of the car. After my ko3's blew again at 45,000 miles I went with the AWE stage 3 kit with the AWE Manifold's. My Ko4's blew at 67,000 miles. I sold the car after that. Don't get me wrong these cars are fun to drive especially on the highway. Now that I'm older & things have gotten cheaper for the B5 S4 I might buy another one for a toy. It was so fun beating on Mustangs, Zo6's, GTO's, etc back than. People always assumed it was A4 a lot of people never heard of a S4, so I use to go with it. Me- Hey you wanna race my Audi A4?. Pray-Do you mine popping the hood?. Me- Sure. Pray- Biturbo(scratching head). Me- My car swings both ways lol. Prey- is this car turbo? Me- do you see a turbo. prey- no. My 1997 Audi B5 A4 Quattro 1.8T is pretty reliable and I'm hitting the 300K mark. The drivetrain is still all original and still shifts nicely (5 spd manual). I had to change the turbo and engine gaskets, and put in bigger turbo and run it at 25 psi boost. I keep blowing out the charge pipe due to poor silicon connectors and stripped t-bolt clamps. The engine has original crank, cam, AEB head, it likes the boost and RPM's. I need better silicon connectors and t-bolts clamps. But the MegaSquirt computer is performing nicely. Using MAF sensor instead of MAP. Have it changed to E85 fuel too. I love it.

18 year-old Imola here (bought it new in 2002) used as a daily driver all along. In the last few years it's started to cost an average of a couple grand a year to keep things properly maintained, but it hasn't left me stranded (yet) in all that time. Not heavily modded (suspension, RS4 clutch, light flywheel, DPs and cat-back, forge bypass, but still running stock turbos) so I agree that they are fairly bulletproof as long as you fix things as soon as they start to have an issue. I'm pushing 49x wtq with 605s on a stock block and it's been pretty reliable. The biggest complaint is how several things on the car are a pain to work on. I had a front wheel bearing go bad and after stripping the hub bolts, I had to end up removing the control arm which lead me to another nightmare. The control arm bolt can only be removed by loosening up the subframe. lol Knowing what I know now, I would've just removed the cx axle and save myself a ton of time. Another simple job which would be simple on any other car is the tensioner pulley. There's just not enough space between the front of the engine and the radiator. On my noggy I've had minimal issues, however on the casa not so much. Bought the casa from CT drove it home and thought I just had to replace the exhaust. After 2 months we found that the downpipes were rusted out. Time for an engine pull as that's the only to get it out with rusted bolts. On the same car the starter went out, getting to the starter is such a headache that I decided to just save it until I pull the engine. Replacing a starter shouldn't be that big of a deal.
@CIPGAS4 жыл бұрын
Yeah space is a motor issue and that bolt for the lower control arm is a pain. I didn’t want to move the subframe so I cut the bolt off and installed a new one in reverse.

I see entry level cars running for 4k to 7k, it seems all of those cars are gonna most likely need some or all of what you described there in your video. I will assume that sellers of this entry priced cars are doing so to avoid the coming maintenance items. Would it be fair to assume that 5k in deferred repairs is average to get things solid? I heard the turbo replacement job can cost the price of the car. It's hard to know by looking at an ad, what car is the right one to start with.

Hey man! Great video! I’m looking to get a daily and I found an 02 A6 with the 2.7bt with 159k for 2k I want to go look at it but what should I look for? Besides the standard tires brakes and suspension. I’m new to looking into audis any tips for a fellow Jersey native? 😅
@CIPGAS3 жыл бұрын
Hey man. Thank you and great choice of car. When looking at these the most important thing to do is can them to see of any issues that may be going on that aren’t superficial. Other than that make sure the idle is smooth and check for sunroof leaks and shot suspension components like control arms.

Hi from UK. Was looking at the xs power stk for a 6266, u think with pistons rods and built 2.8 heads, the motor will hold around say 600 whp on pump (99 oct). Was strongly considering tte780s but top end power and apparent cheaper build changed my mind. I also like the sounds and characteristics of a single minus the lag side of it
@CIPGAS3 жыл бұрын
Hey man. That recipe will definitely get you to 600 as long as fueling is set up right.

I still believe the 1.8 or 2.0 is way more reliable Espeically for road course guys, and way easier to work on
@CIPGAS3 жыл бұрын
They’re great motors and can be very reliable. Everyone has an opinion on reliability depending on experiences.
@elevatedperformance3 жыл бұрын
4uattros4 it’s hard for road course guys who really just want the lightest car so the extra 180lbs or whatever the difference is kills us through bends but yeah obviously the 2.7 makes up for it when u exit or straights. But if there is ways to make the motor more simplified then that’s where it becomes a real fun road course car Bc the 1.8 and 2.0 is extremely easy to work on with the extra space

Doubt they would fit. But honestly you’d have an easier time putting a 2.7t in your a4 than trying to boost the 3.0. You would have to figure out oil feed and return lines plus the coolant lines as well. All that on a motor that was not built to handle boost.
