While I can't be certain about the Audi, the Golf R also has a sound speaker integrated in the exhaust. Have a look at where it splits and you can see it. In Race or using Individual settings, the exhaust note is greatly amplified by altering the sound waves coming through.

Nice, but for what reason would you pick an R over a GTI Clubsport at the same price range? We know the R have AWD, but what else? We should all heard the Clubsport is the more fun car by now, & might look a bit better. We know we can choose R-Line option (at least here in Sweden) But what else reason would you get an Golf R over the new GTI Clubsport at peak 290 HP..?
@SS8000cars8 жыл бұрын
I think you have covered the main points, the extra security of 4 wheel drive, 300HP and good balanced handling. GTI Clubsport not available when we bought the R. Still slightly prefer looks of R but I admit it is close!
@tredfxman8 жыл бұрын
SS8000cars Okay, i bought the GTI CS production is goin on this week. Fantastic price as its the same price as GTI here in Sweden. CS wont get as heavy since R is 4WD, and even compared to normal GTI, CS is lighter. It also sends all 100% power to the front wheels, so that will provide for a funnn street car! Also in my opinion it looks better than the R & it probably have better aftersale value since its a special edition, but no hate for you R guys, remember hating is immature, both cars Rock! ;)

I can't believe that there are so many stupid and ignorant people fighting in the comments which one is better... I even read that the Golf R is equivalent of the RS3 and the S3 is the equivalent of the GTI rofl. The reason most of comparison videos are between the R and the RS3 is because the R is the fastest car they have under the VW logo and by comparing it to the RS3 they virtually promote it to a different category. If you want to know (from experience and knowledge) both of these cars run the same engines and chassis just with different bodies and setups. The Golf is set up for a more "sporty" experience while the S3 is set up for a more luxurious and comfortable one. In most countries the Audi is more expensive because it is the "premium" brand of the Volkswagen group (Audi, VW, Seat, Skoda).

Golf R owner here, and I cross-shopped these two when it was looking like it'd be very difficult to get an R for MSRP. Anyway, just a heads-up, there are leather "seating surfaces" options for the R too, and they're quite nice. The "seating surfaces" just means that only the parts that touch your body are leather, and everything else is fake. Spot on about the cars being for different types of people though! The R's comfort mode is nice when you're sore after track days and what not, but the interior of the Audi is just a bit more luxury oriented than the R, and that's OK! Different strokes for different folks! Enjoyed the video, and I'd say for future reviews, just make sure you're aware of available options before rendering a verdict.
@SS8000cars8 жыл бұрын
The leather interior for the golf R costs £1,750- £2,500 dependant on which variant you get and is not standard. However on the Audi S3 the leather seating is standard. We are aware of the extras you can get on both cars however the review is based upon the the base spec of each car. Additional optional extras are not taken into account in our final option because it would not keep the price comparison consistency thus making it a biased review.
@lonememe8 жыл бұрын
Oh! I wrongly assumed that just because the leather was standard in the US that it would also be standard in the UK. That's a hell of a mark-up too considering they're only leather seating "surfaces" and not completely leather seats. Interesting methodology otherwise. Best of luck and I look forward to seeing more reviews.

Race mode in the golf just plays engine sound through the speakers. Test drove the golf after the M135i and asked the VW salesman how the hell a 2L 4 cylinder could sound better than a 3L 6 cylinder, and is it turns out it doesn't. They cheat by using the speakers when you put it in sport mode.
@SS8000cars7 жыл бұрын
We agree, there is no question a 6 cylinder sounds much better than a 4 cylinder in this case. Both cars actually use Soundaktors to create the engine sound into the cabin rather than play it through the speakers.

Fact is: those two pimply faces have no clue, no style and no taste. Their opinion isn't worth a penny. Audi = Style, compact upper class, perfect design, quality and fantastic interior. Golf = cheap copy of S3 for people who can't afford the AUDI. Ugly outdated interior for average people. Ugly design. Average quality.

Interesting reviews. Though I'd have thought if the Audi was aimed at comfort it would have standard kit like folding mirrors, parking sensors, adaptive cruise etc. All of which is standard on the R. I ordered the R for that reason. Base price they're the same but the S3 seriously racks up when you try make it like for like to the R's spec. I went for an R in the end but was a tough one. Love the S3 interior - class of its own compared to the Golf, which feels tacky IMO
@SS8000cars8 жыл бұрын
Compared to the Audi I get what you mean though carpets aside I wouldn't call the R tacky. Compare it to a Focus and you get a different answer! And put the R in race and the decision becomes easy imo. But then you can see from the type of cars we run they have to be performance orientated. FYI the McLaren is better quality than the R8, so all things are relative!
@massiveglove29608 жыл бұрын
GTI PP you get even more as standard kit for less money and, with similar torque levels, it feels almost the same as the R in most driving. Great interior too.

I'd be interested to live with the S3 for a but. I traded my Mk7 Golf R in after only 10 month. It developed a 12 item 'snag' list. I felt the general built quality was shocking. The steering is much better than previous fast golf's, but by no means a game changer.

Wouldn't the Audi RS3 been a more accurate comparison. Or is this a price point comparison??
@SS8000cars8 жыл бұрын
Price is always relevant because most people have a budget. So on the road the RS3 is way out of the price bracket of these two. However in Race mode and on most tracks, in most hands, the R would leave the RS3 and be the more exciting ride. Here the comparison is valid and the R would edge it imo. RS3 monstrously fast in a straight line! Can I just temper our comments with we have not as yet driven the latest spec RS3 so our opinion is based on other reports and our experiences with our S3.
@ikybaiiki8 жыл бұрын
S3 is the golf R's equivalent the RS3 is up by another level, compare the specs
@SS8000cars8 жыл бұрын
RS3 is faster in a straight line no question but it cannot carry the same speed into a corner as the R because the balance on the R is way better which means the R emerges from the corner faster, in some cases quite a lot faster. Where these 2 cars have been tested on track it is the R that will post the faster lap time nine times out of ten. Not in the same price bracket I agree but an interesting comparison nevertheless!

Normal people on the street find the S3 better to look at, so just driving it around town is showing off. I've never seen a Golf R turn peoples heads. You can't go wrong with either. What options did both cars have? Did the S3 have magnetic ride or did the Golf R have DCC?
@SS8000cars8 жыл бұрын
S3 does not have Magnetic ride and the R does not have DCC. Funnily enough we have found the S3 is all but invisible to other people and it is the R that turns heads but in our case this may be colour orientated.
@Harpreet068 жыл бұрын
SS8000cars Yeah you're right about the colours. In red, white and in some silver colours, the S3 just looks like a regular audi a3. The sepang blue S3 stands out more, like this lapiz blue golf R. So without the magnetic ride/DCC, would you say the Audi S3 has a more comfortable ride? I'm choosing between the two and my area has quite a lot of potholes.

I understand where you are coming from Ian. The VW R has benefits as a track car and, if you are younger or more talented than I am, it would be pretty amazing. Thing is, you can get the Golf R in a less "flashy" colour and slap the leather in there, making it better for said family man, and still be about ten grand less than the Audi. SS8000cars apologies, people don't usually take constructive criticism. I feel like the content of the video was good, you've clearly had a good opportunity to test some good cars, and whoever did the camera angles is very professional. Editing looks good too. Areas you could improve on is actually making what you say 'interesting', in the sense that you just repeat what people who have any idea about German hot hatches already know. And also be more enthusiastic! It's clear that you both like cars but without enthusiasm, it's just like a slow paced documentary. Veikra Not at all, think about it, it's a 2.0 litre engine, yes it's powerful but it the sound it produces already is great but still can't be as deep as a V8, moreover German cars have great sound and vibration insulation, so you won't hear the sound inside like it is in hte outside, but they can't just make the exhaust louder because it's supposed to be a "civilised sports hatchback" so it's the obvious solution to amplify the sound inside the car, they're not faking power it's just sound which made to make you more excited, and plus VW is trying to hide this out because it's not a big deal unless you're trying to find faults with the car, and it's funny when the First comment saying " Doesn't Volkswagen pump engine audio in through the speakers?" like it's VW only. Now almost all car manufacturers do it, you want to know what's more lame? a Ford mustang having a similar system in their V6 versions...
@Nordic_Mechanic8 жыл бұрын
abd bach I understand the thinking, but I disagree with it. It's rice, let's bring back the double blade wipers and led windshield washer nozzles. And yes , it's just as lame with the v6 mustangs. Im not the one suggesting it's only volkswagen, I was the one unaware they did it. A great sound used to be the by-product of a great engine, now it's just audio samples, it's sad.
@abdbach3798 жыл бұрын
Veikra yep I actually agree with what you'er say, but if I sound like defending Vw it's just because the soundaktor (the name of the device) doesn't actually make the car louder in the inside (you can check the youtube videos about it, and most people can't even tell the difference between it off and on) it's just supposed to bring back that 2.0l engine "grunt" before it was turbocharged, they don't try to make it louder or sound like a big engine ;)

Both cars are made by the same company and are very similar. Of course the Audi is a little bit more premium but that depends on the taste. Personally, I don't like the display in the middle of the windscreen....that blocks my total visibility. I also don't like the reddish coloring on the Audi's dash and on a night drive, it's so annoying. Interior design of Audi is also less elaborated in my opinion. I own Golf MK7 GTI and it's interior, practicality and looks are astonishing. For me audi S3 looks like a more expensive version of Seat Leon, whereas Golf is a myth and the emblem of Volkswagen and you can feel it everywhere in the car. Don't forget that all these Leon Cupra, S3, etc. are adjusted versions of the Golf. If you buy a powerful small audi, RS3 is the one to go.

I have a Golf R and m Mate has a S3 , both optioned up , you cant tell the difference except the Audi feels more luxurious hence the 10K increase in price, its heavier as well hence the brake fade, identical everything else
@SS8000cars8 жыл бұрын
S3 is the same basic price as the R. RS3 is 10K more expensive or thereabouts.
@Gr8mate138 жыл бұрын
Like i said both are optioned up , options on the Audi are way more expensive as is his servicing. Here in Australia base model Golf R is 57Kwith the manual box 60K with dsg, you cannot get a Manual Audi hence its cheaper , 63.9k for the Audi, no options at all. Example .. he got a paint pack , that alone cost 2.5K ......., changed tyres to Continentals apparently they protect the rims ( bullshit )that cost 1k. and the list went on. he also got Metallic paint, driver assist and sport pack, when you get the Sport pack the electric seats are deleted and you then have to re-option them with electric seats, ,,, thus the 10k difference,,, hardly the same price The only option on mine was adding the leather seats RS 3 is $78K.. The biggest issue i found with the 2 cars is the headroom the Audi feels claustrophobic , the boot will not take a set of golf club at all unless you drop the seats its tiny.

No, the Audi and the VW have the same engine with 300 HP at 5500 rpm and a torque of 380 NM at 1800rpm. And they have only 4 cylinders. A BMW m140i or m240i has 340 HP at 5800rpm and a torque of 500NM at 1250rpm. The engine is a 3l engine with six cylinders. This car has the option of an adaptive Management. ECO Pro: Driving in a town the next gear comes at 1100 rpm.Also if You drive in D. The S Program feels completly different.The engine reacts very fast to change the gears and You can go up to 7000 rpm. But this is not necessary. The sound in ECO Pro and D is as if You drive with 150 HP. You hear nothing. ECO Pro has a limit at 130 km/h and You can drive with 7,5l Super for 100 km and Tempomat at 130 km/h on a German Highway. Also in D the sound comes late. At 3500 rpm. If You choose sport the car is a beast. 4,3 seconds until 100 km/h. And the engine is getting louder and louder. S+ is the program, which is too hard for a normal driver. The gearbox always finds the best gear. Sure, You have the option to change the gear manually with the wipes on the steering wheel. But there is no reason to do it. And: Every m140i or 240i has 360 HP, some more than 370 HP. The 340 HP are official to make a greater difference to the M 2 with 410 HP (?). And it is allowed that an engine has 10% more HP or 10% less HP. Normaly a good speed on a German Highway is between 160 km/h and 170 km/h. The engine needs about 10 l Super + over 100 km. If You have a free highway an drive between 200 km/h and 235 km/h the engine takes about 12l -13 l Super +. Many people do not understand why BMW will put four cylinder engines in the compact class. Sure You have more place behind the driver. But if You use the car mostly with two persons everything is okay. And a third person should not be a problem. You can change the seat beside the driver. Many people do not need so much place if they do not drive the car. So, in my opinion it is possible to drive in the holidays with 3 Persons and the things they need. I believe that BMW makes a mistake, because people like the six cylinder engine. This engine came to the market at 1982 in the 323i. And year after year the engine became better. And Mercedes Benz and BMW will work together in the future. About 30 modells will come in the next years. And some dealers offer both: Mercedes and BMW. Excuse my bad English, but i think You understand what i mean. And -i forgot- the Audi A3 RS is a concurrent for the M2. I wish You all the very best and sent many greetings from Germany. Let us all hope, that the Brexit will not coast so much money for all of us.

If you look at how these two are named R = Race (well racier anyway) and S = Sport (well sporty anyway). The way I see it Audi has always marketed their "S" cars as a sportier version of their luxury cars and the RS is obviously their harder core road cars. To add just for the hell of it I think Audi's RS and Volkswagen's R aren't particularly suitable as track day weapons but are consummate sporting road cars which is where most performance saloon/hatch/wagon's spend the vast vast majority of their lives. There are cars that can bridge the gap from road to track better but most of those end up being more compromised road cars. Just my 2 cents/rant.

Certainly I agree with much of what you say. Though it might surprise you how many are taken on the track.

@SS8000cars7 жыл бұрын
Cheers, it would certainly be interesting to compare the RS3 with the golf R however, the RS3 is around £8,000 extra and has over 60 more bhp than the golf. The S3 and the R are both in the same price bracket and use the same engines which is why we decided to compare the two.

Audi and Volkswagen are pretty much the exact same thing, Volkswagen uses Audi's engine valves and for those who say Volkswagen is unreliable, those people probably never owned a Volkswagen . its all about taste and personality.I prefer the Volkswagen because its cheaper and throughout my history with Volkswagen, My Volkswagen never broke once. I'd only pick Audi if i was wealthy .

You're comparing apples to oranges here. Why didn't you put Golf R against Audi RS3.
@SS8000cars8 жыл бұрын
Hey Jim, In some ways you are right but price is an important factor when buying any new car and the RS3 is in the next price bracket. Also other than outright power the RS3 and S3 are not dissimilar in what they offer, quality and usability perhaps above outright handling and balance. So the comments that won the R its first place here, just it has to be said, may well have been true even if the RS3 had been the competitor. Oh and we weren't offered an RS3!
@flyer88878 жыл бұрын
RS3 uses 5 cyl engine, and much more powerful. Meanwhile S3 and the R uses an identical engine.
