I have an 18Z kit from ECS Tuning in the US, it is good, but beware - the 18Z calipers will definitely give you a long pedal with the factory master cylinder. I am switching to a Brembo GT 4 pot with a 328 2 pc rotor - made by Brembo. The long pedal is un-nerving on the race track and the modulation zone is very short. Lived and learned, moving on :) (2001 TT 225Q AMU)

Don't forget replacing and upgrading brake fluid! A high dry and wet boiling point will help a lot with countering brake fade under repeated brake manoeuvres and it isn't that expensive for a full flush. For example Motul RBF600 is around 11 EUR for 0.5l, so 33 EUR for a flush...
@TheParrottBros
@TheParrottBros 4 жыл бұрын
Vincent That’s a great point Vincent thank you for your comment, especially if you’re going to do track days it is very important to replace your brake fluid and upgrade to one with a higher boiling point as mentioned, I have seen it countless times where people have lost the pedal mid track day as the brakes have just overheated because of poor quality old brake fluid.
@vincentput
@vincentput 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheParrottBros indeed also the surface of the hydraulic pistons needs to be observed when upgrading to a BBK. Most aftermarket solutions are optimised for the master cylinder, but some self sourced solutions, even though massively larger in caliper and piston size can feel underwhelming or can even be dangerous if not matched to your master cylinder. Of course you know this, but some viewers don't so I thought I'd mention this.

Hi, thanks, you've given me an answer to a question i had last year - the long pedal travel issue. it is very scary when you experience it on a race track!! I have the 18Z 6 pot Porsche/Brembo upgrade with 2 piece floating rotors up front. ECS Tuning in the states has a kit with all you need. I have new factory rear calipers installed with a kit that allows the use of the R32 disk size, also from ECS tuning and a 2 piece floating rotor. Working with my pit service and local performance shop, we chased the intermittent issue (long pedal) by flushing fluid and upgrading to very high temp racing fluid (twice) and then venting my front bumper cover, then driving technique. Then, looking at the pad operating temperature range for the front, the service tech and i thought maybe i was just not pushing hem hard enough to keep temperature in them. In the next practice session I worked the brakes harder with later and firmer application along with more left foot use on my trail braking. Voilla, never had the issue again - now since it was intermittent I suspect there is a combination of underserve and pad temp going on - I am running Hawk yellows in front and the blues in the rear. Granted, I am a hobbyist racer and for me, the learning process is a big part of my experience and the fun. I would never had come to understand the under servo scenario without your video, thank you very much. I would be interested in a discussion on rear brake upgrades using something stock but from another model. For track use, having 4 pots up front for example and 1 pots in there rear will bring the driver to a point of "outgrowing" the capabilities of the setup once they get into a regular routine of track time with some coaching. Again, I would never had come to understand the under servo scenario without your video, thank you very much!!

@Xappt 3 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by „under servo“?
@albertsiciliano4209
@albertsiciliano4209 3 жыл бұрын
@@Xappt hi, what I mean is that the brake cylinder is likely too small for the brake fluid volume I need to push. So, the usable pedal range (~70-100% stroke) is short and therefore hard to modulate. I went from 4 single pistons to 14.
@Xappt
@Xappt 3 жыл бұрын
@@albertsiciliano4209 Arright understood now. Did you change the master by now?
@johnchisholm2692
@johnchisholm2692 Жыл бұрын
@Albert Siciliano How long was the pedal travel that you experienced? I have fitted 18z 6 pots to my track car, I'm sure I have an issue with bleeding the brakes, as the pedal almost touches the floor before you get any feel. That's with all new lines, braided hoses and racing fluid. I'm guessing that I need to bleed them a few more times. I have heard of people fitting check valves to the system to retain a few psi of pressure, but I'm yet to hear of anyone fitting a bigger master cylinder, if that is such an option on this platform.
@albertsiciliano4209
@albertsiciliano4209 Жыл бұрын
@@johnchisholm2692 The pedal travel was very long and would arise randomly. When it happened last, I had it towed to the shop for a full inspection of the brake system. Not taking chances, I had the master cylinder replaced with OEM, lines tested, calipers inspected and bought a new to me ABS pump/computer assembly. Turns out both ABS/computer assemblies checked out. I did have a failing steering position sensor, which was replaced. The team at the shop believed that with the intermittent failures of the steering position sensor and braking hard enough to bring the ABS into play, caused the system to "ice". This would result in a long pedal moment. The year prior I had wheel bearings replaced after a few moments with the long pedal happening. As for fluid it has been changed twice per season and is the 600 degree fluid from StopTech. I do believe that the car is under-servoed since the majority of the braking and trail activity is within a small window near the end of normal pedal travel. The piston just can't move enough fluid for all 14 brake pistons (+10 over stock). I'll likely move to a 330 mm setup with 4 piston calipers - Stop Tech has a nice kit for the car.

Dear Parrott Bro's, great comprehensive informative video content as usual for an Audi TT Mk1 8N 225bhp enthusiast like myself! I have heard that late model Porsche Boxter calipers will also fit the existing stock brackets as a larger than stock TT Mk1 4 pot brake upgrade? Someone correct me I'm wrong... Or course, your choice of stopping power is based on your needs anywhere from what a daily driver wants all the way to the most competitive racer in a desired class in a specific discipline of racing. My 2001 TT went with a simple stock solution by Power Stop and their Euro-Stop solid rotors and matching pads all the way around the stock single piston calipers. These Power Stop products are a noticeable improvement over stock rotors and pads for the do it yourself'er that likes to drive with a bit spirit every now and then. I live in Colorado Springs, Colorado and I often drive my TT through the I-70 Vail Pass. The steep 7% downhill grades for miles at a time will certainly test your brakes (especially when you get into with a Porsche 996 Carrera 2 and beat them on the brakes). I love my TT! Keep the videos coming.

Geoff Lockley from that I’ve researched the Porsche brakes run bigger discs which is an improvement but they are not a straight fit and also require the discs to be redrilled, not sure what model Porsche it was. I always try and do straight swap modifications as it makes like easier as parts don’t require special attention should you need new bits. And for the normal diy’er it’s much more straight forward and you don’t need machine shops and such. Like you said your right it all depends on what people want to do with the car. For spirited driving simply upgrading the discs and pads for a better quality ones will make a good improvement. Thanks will be plenty more to come.
