I don't know why having different audiobooks versions with different narrators it's such a heated debate. A narrator can absolutely make of break a book and having the option to choose a different version when you don't vibe with the interpretation is great actually!

Because I assume narrators want to build a portfolio of work. And if you say look here and they look, find other people. They may find better choice. They may think your work is cheap. I also believe that having multiple choices devalues the first narrator. Dunno what the reasons are, but it is not hard to come up with reasons.

That audible "synergistic insights innovative model value" business bullshit was so frustrating to listen to. It basically communicates net zero information about what the new system will be. If authors aren't getting more than 50% (and should be getting at least the industry standard of 70%) then it's still exploitative and inequitable in my view Edit to say: Thank you Daniel for continuing to boost awareness of these issues!

The biggest problem with the Amazon thing is probably akin to the Google problem, where even when there are better search engine options, almost nobody uses or even knows about them because Google just smothers them. I'd like to think there are ways to create viable, widely-used alternatives to Audible, but it's hard to see right now. ...also, like, I know the words on the screen said it was random, but did anyone else think that creepy music was weirdly fitting? Nah, nevermind, let's not get all conspiratorial here.

If it’s true they were done in the traditional wood block and Linocut print making method, then each cover took anywhere from 10-50hrs to make. 4:44 the while model also hinges on one other aspect: audible said that the listeners plan contribution (money) is spread across ALL books that the listener has listened to in a month-which means- A) this model is competitive and pitches authors against each other B) the more a person listens, the more the plan money is shared and the less money goes to any individual author- Ergo-if you put audible on in the background 24/7 and listen to a gazillion books, then the final compensation is a micro-dose of the plan cost times the already low rate of compensation! Ergo-the more people listen, the less authors make!!!!

Fair warning with the adaptation of The Magicians: it deviates very far from the books fairly quickly (in a way I liked, since I think it made it work better for that medium). It also does not sugarcoat some of the more hard to watch parts of a certain character's story.

I prefer the show, though I do kind of like the end of the third book more than the end of the series. I think aging them up helped quite a bit. Q was a bit too incel-y in the books for my liking and Penny was definitely far more developed in the show. I do like that in the books, they actually progressed further in school, to the point where it was a bit more believable they could do the things the do.

The Legacy of Kain series is hard to give a short description of because it is properly epic in scope. Kain's story is that of betrayal, both of him and by him, as he goes from nobleman to king of the vampires to the enemy of fate itself. Raziel is an executed vampire turned wraith out for revenge and to right a post-apocalyptic world. And when the two personal storylines meet and clash they must go from mortal enemies to allies.

Funny idea here.... How about the first 2000 - 5000 or so books sold on audible would be more for the author. Then smaller authors would get more for their books enabling smaller creators to receive a living income then enabling more authors to pursue different varieties of books. Then the tiers would parable out to the mega sellers that people making hundreds of thousands to millions would not see a decline in their income. More writers eating, means more books.

Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver series is hard to describe because it's epic in every sense of the word. It's Dark Souls before Dark Souls but with a plot you can follow. Nobleman Kain rises up to become a big bad vampire lord and conquers the world, but then gets jealous when one of his lieutenants, Raziel, sprouts wings, and murders him... only for Raziel to be resurrected a thousand years later by an Elder Chaos god that looks like a squid to get revenge by eating souls. Raziel goes around trying to kill Kain, and Zelda style picks up new abilities along the way like gliding, swimming, and magic swords as he kills his former now monstrous brothers one by one. Kain and Raziel cat and mouse their way through multiple encounters, timetravel, paradoxes, multiple planes of existence, alternate worlds and betrayal as they learn the secrets of their world and history. Since the games alternate between the two characters up until the last one where they both co-lead, you get a lot of depth on their different perspectives, the Kain games are more action focused and Raziel is more puzzle based. It takes five games to get to the ending and its a hell of an ending, the payoff is great... but still left room open for more story that we all wanted. AMAZING voice acting with a stacked cast including Michael Bell, Simon Templeman and the late Tony Jay all giving epic philosophical speeches. Written by Amy Hennig who also wrote the Uncharted games.
@JRCSalter
@JRCSalter Ай бұрын
I've always thought that Templeman would be fantastic in a live action version of the series. He's got the voice, of course, but damn, he's also got the look. I remember seeing him in an episode of Angel, and wondered why the hell haven't the games been filmed yet with him as the titular character.

THANK YOU FOR COVERING The Legacy of Kain graphic novel! I hadn't even heard about this. Thanks to you I can support it! One of my favorite game series of all time. Basically, it was Vampire Dark Souls with a game of thrones vibe. The actual gameplay was mostly that very specific genre/era of PS2 action platformer. Somewhere between all those mascot games like Jak and Daxter and the more combat focused ones like God of War. There was also a fair bit of sneaking since you play as either a vampire or a wraith. There are dueling narratives of Kain, the guy who ruined the world by denying fate and his protege, Raziel, who he betrayed, intentionally, who then became the lackey of the Elder God trying to reset the timeline and assassinate Kain. Very Shakespearian and Lovecraftian vibes for the story and dialogue, lots of talk about fate and will and what is right and who has the right. I mean, the fallen Vampire paradise/hellscape they exist in is known as Nosgoth, for fucks sake! I really think you would enjoy it, Daniel. They have trying to been get a new project off the ground for decades but most momentum was lost with the shifting of the rights AND when the VA for the Elder God (same guy who played Count Frolo in Disneys The Hunchback of Notre Dame) passed away. So glad they are doing this. CANNOT WAIT!

I'm so excited for more Legacy of Kain. That series was really special, particularly from Soul Reaver onwards; the lore of that setting is fascinating and dark, but what really made the games stand out was their exceptional writing of characters and dialogue. It gave the games this kind of gothic shakespeare vibe that was just awesome, and made even better by absolutely flawless voice acting. The games themselves haven't aged super well in my opinion, just in terms of how their controls etc are mapped, but the story, characters and lore are world class and worth revisiting.

the magicians tv is one of my favorite shows (up there with fringe and bsg) i haven't read the books but i know they take a decent amount of liberties but this show is just a part of my soul tbh while i can say that with my whole chest the show is definitely not perfect and some things didn't age great. since you read the books ill say you'll see whats coming for the season one finale but still want to trigger warn because it is quite different having that content visually vs in a book. but if you can get past that i think the show works really hard to actually deal with that plot in a way i had not seen before on screen.

Oh my husband loves the Legacy of Kane, you can find a full movie of just the story buts if the game. It’s really long but it is available. He will be happy to know they’re still doing something with it.

Definitely give the Dragon Prince another go! S4 was rough and took a nosedive but I think they picked it up again with S5 and even more so it seems with S6! Fantasy News is something I look forward to watching every week, thank you so much for doing this :)

I think we need to remember it's OK to like two things at the same time. I adore Michael and Kate's. It hits all the nostalgia yummies. Pikes gives the series a new take, with all the different voices and accents. I have them all and listen to them pretty constantly. Can't wait for The Shadow Rising as it's the collective favorite. I'd be ok with her stopping after, but will buy them all if she continues.

I've been using audible when I can (bootleg ai voice audio books when I can't) and if I like the book, I'll buy the physical copy too. Hearing how bad they are about royalties I'm glad I do this.

Came here to offer an opinion on Dragon Prince v. The Magicians next debate. As someone who loves both properties I more regularly find myself up on a soapbox for The Magicians. It's hard to describe why both my wife and I enjoy it so much (we regularly recommend it to people and are told it's too dark), but I think it boils down to how much fun they clearly have making the show. Like any of the SciFi/Fantasy TV greats, as the seasons go on the writers progressively make the actors stretch (body swaps, crazy magical drugs, myriad foam rubber apparatuses, etc) more and more in a way that I would describe as relentlessly watchable. As another commenter mentioned, this is one of the few properties where the adaptation is superior to the original, but it is also the one show I have every seen actually nail a musical episode (The Magicians did four). It helps that everyone involved in the show is super pretty, but the entire cast does such a killer job delivering some pretty wild material with a straight face and a lot of charm. I think the show just gets stronger up to the finale, a rare purely linear arc of television quality.

But do you think someone who's 18 and knows nothing about the series will anticipate and easy-breezy get through, say, Cersei and Jamie's sick relationship, the Red Wedding, or...ANY of the gruesomeness ASOIAF offers based on the new covers? IMO they're more mid-to-late YA and nowhere near the level of adult that ASOIAF is. Not even close.

@@5GburnI agree with you but there’s only so much they can do at an affordable cost. They look better than the previous versions. Also I feel like just ppl look into a series before they start them.

I'm done buying new GoT editions. I have 3 complete editions of the 5 books as is now. If WoW and DoS never releases, the ones I have will be fine. If they do release, chances are they won't have this style of cover art anyway, so rather than having multiple editions of the first 5 and then 1 or 2 books that don't match, I'll just wait to see what covers they will have and get a complete matching set.

Thank you for the Legacy of Kain update! Haven't thought about that series in years, but my siblings and I ADORED these games as kids! Legacy of Kain is a gothic fantasy story about a vampire named Kain who was upset at the world and his own vampiristic state. He found a way to travel back through time and try to dismantle the vampire chain of succession of guardians. If all the guardians die at the same time, then the curse of vampirism will end forever... but then Kain discovers through a cruel twist of fate that he himself is the final guardian. He has to choose between killing himself to end vampirism forever and restore the world for humanity or rule the land of Nosgoth in damnation as the world falls apart around him. That's just one of the two main characters, and that's just his first arc! These games had a great story! They didn't always have the best gameplay, and the story wasn't always told as well as it could have been, but Raziel, Kain, and the way that their stories weave together in the final game are still etched into my memory. I highly recommend checking the games out if you can handle retro gaming!

I like the older version of the WoT audiobooks too, but having listened to them a couple of times I think a new version would make it feel more fresh. That said switching in the middle just isn't going to work for me so unless she finishes it I'll be sticking with the other.
