Any recommendations of libby? Should I go find a good library and get a card?
@MCJSA3 ай бұрын
Yes. You don't lose access to your Audible library colletion when you cancel your sub. This is because people took Audible to court and forced them to do this. Previously you would not be able to cancel without losing access to everything you had "bought" - or "rented" in their view. I don't know whether this happened before or after Amazon bought Audible though ripping you off like that is a very Amazon thing to do. This suit is another wonderful example of how companies are so great at "regulating themselves".
@SamuelEarth3 ай бұрын
Wow! How long ago was this lawsuit? Not to give them a benefit of the doubt or anything, but it does sound like a pretty inevitable series of events.
@MCJSA3 ай бұрын
@@SamuelEarth I don't remember, maybe four or five years ago. At one point I wanted to cancel but the system warned me that I'd lose access to my catalog if I did, and I had several hundred books, so I kept it. Later, I got messages that the policy had changed because of a class action suit against them for it.

Been using my local library but it is so hard to get books I want to listen to…I may have to give Audible a try 🤔
@SamuelEarth Жыл бұрын
It’s the best! The biggest advantage it has over a library is selection.
@MCJSA3 ай бұрын
Yes. Library collections are spotty. If you're into supermarket genres and wanting to read the latest ... whatever, public libraries are fine. Otherwise, it's pretty random and depends on where you live or which cards you can get. Even then, many more recent titles seem to be always on hold, so you need to be pretty flexible about when you read what you want to read. Still, it's "free" like any taxpayer supported thing and the level of service is what taxpayers are willing to pay for it.

So, I have to assume that the 7.95 per month audio book catalogue has less choices than the 14.95 plan? I have no intention of reading any book twice, so I don't see the need for the higher priced plan unless there just aren't enough choices in the cheaper plan. I currently use the free library audio books but I'm always struggling to complete a book series because they inevitably don't have the complete set, so frustrating. Your thoughts on this would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
@SamuelEarth Жыл бұрын
The $7.95/mo plan and the $14.95/mo plan have the same choices. The higher priced one just gives you MUCH much better deals on books that aren’t included in the Plus Catalog. If you don’t want to listen to any book twice, correct me if I’m wrong but it doesn’t sound like book ownership is much of a priority. So I think it really depends on how many books you want to listen to. If you only run across maybe one book a month that you can’t find in the library, I’d recommend getting the $14.95/mo membership so you can access that book at a discounted rate (I mean, the $14.95/mo option gives you one credit per month that you can use to buy any book no matter the price). Audible has the biggest selection of audiobooks vs just about any company or establishment out there, but that selection is just part of what its users pay for. The permanent ownership of audiobooks is another, so if you’re really trying to spend as little as possible getting access to these books, it might be a good idea to see if there are other less expensive platforms that have those books. I hope that helps!
@Leodcap Жыл бұрын
So , I have to pay for membership And I have to pay for each audiobook I want to listen? Or I have to pay for membership and I have unlimited access to only some audiobooks. And other select titles I have to buy?
@SamuelEarth Жыл бұрын
Not quite but very close. You have to pay for your membership either way. One of them allows you to all access to certain content (Audible Plus). The other allows you all access to certain content, one credit per month that you can use to buy any book per month that includes Once you buy Audible Premium Plus books, you get to keep them forever even if you cancel your membership. You also get 30% off all books site-wide, and you can also buy three more credits at a time at a heavily discounted rate. I haven’t paid more than $10 for any audiobook in YEARS. You have to pay either way. Audiobook streaming is just more expensive than TV shows, movies, and music. These platforms haven’t found a way to decentralize audiobooks like they have those other entertainment mediums. That’s the short of it, but due to its vast selection and the deals/options it offers for membership, Audible is the closest thing most people have to that ideal-cost audiobook platform.

No. The books you get with the credit you keep. You have a couple hours to return the book if you bought it by mistake.

I think that would be a good option for everyone to have - kind of like Spotify where you can just listen ad-free, but Audible hasn’t reached the point where they don’t need to charge for books at all and they can just have their users on a month-to-month all-you-can-listen basis.

There are also free audiobooks on Project Guttenberg. Some are read by machine and some by volunteers. I prefer Audible for the quality of the human readers and have never found any Audible book that is machine read. It's worth looking into the Guttenberg collection, though, particularly if you like free stuff and don't mind the narration so much.

Isn’t the annual one a better deal at $149?
@SamuelEarth10 ай бұрын
Yes it is - at an average of $12.45/credit. The best deal is the Premium Plus Annual option for $229.50/yr, which is $9.56/credit. That’s the one I have, but I personally think it comes down to how much someone listens as credits expire after a year. Otherwise someone’s paying that much for something they wouldn’t be using. I don’t usually get into those on a video like this because most people usually opt for or start out with the $14.95/mo option. I cover that in this video instead. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXu6onh9odGpY6csi=lTyvGgmqTpmlETrk

So if you pay $7 or $14/month, you also have to buy the book too? It’s not like Pandora I guess. Also, what if you want a book, but you can’t relate to the narrator? Thanks
@SamuelEarth7 ай бұрын
The $7.95/mo option includes an all-you-can-listen selection of audiobooks and other audio programs. The $14.95/mo option includes that and one credit that you can use to purchase any single book regardless of price but that's not all. You also get 30% off ALL other audiobooks, most of the time they have sales for certain books that can be 70-80% off, they'll have a "Daily Deal", and also flash holiday sales. On top of this, if $14.95/mo sounds like too much for just a single book, there are other extensions of this membership where you pay less per credit. I have the top-tier membership and haven't paid more than $10 for an audiobook in years. You can also always buy more credits when you run out at a reduced rate - the more you buy at once, the less each costs.

You can very easily return books you don't want or like, and you can also listen to about 5 minutes of any title to check out the narration. I have decided NOT to buy some titles because the narration was not to my taste and I have returned books that I didn't want, need, like or that I'd bought by mistake. It's easy to do.

I don't like Amazon either - terrible labor practices and monopolistic - but I've used Audible since before Amazon bought it and kept using the service because its good. I don't know of anything that compares to it. The catalog is extensive, up to date, and their narrators are often first rate -- prices are very reasonable. Still up to you. If you boycot Amazon, more power to you!

It looks like I've got a Plus Premium account. I didn't know there were tiers. I've had this account for something like 15 years so may have just inherited this. I pay around $14 a month. Plus has a free catalog that you have to dig to find. I'm into Agatha Christie at the moment and found three of the books I wanted to read - early ones - on the Plus catalog for free. These titles don't stay forever in your collection though. They won't disappear but they do eventually demand purchase if you want to listen, though that may not happen for three to six months - maybe longer. I don't know.
@SamuelEarth3 ай бұрын
That’s interesting. I don’t think I’ve heard of that - I was just always under the impression that unless purchased, you only have access to them as long as you’re paying for the subscription.

@@SamuelEarth I discovered this by accident. One day, these "Plus" titles just popped up. I downloaded a few. Later, I had to search for "Plus" in the catalog to find these. There were a bunch of early Wm Borroughs titles that I got but didn't have time to listen to them all before they expired.
