For drum machines, yes. For synths... I don't tend to use pre-amps with them. They change the character of the synths too much. Rather use some EQ or filters. But hey, sometimes you do want to change the sound to something else. Depends on what the objective is. There really is no rules.

And yes, synths. Do synths in stereo if possible. Feed different effects and whatnot.
