The Gate of Baghdad: A Mysterious Journey
Parker Pyne, on vacation in Damascus, sets off on a perilous 400-mile journey across the Syrian Desert to Baghdad by motor coach-a journey once taking months now completed in just thirty-six hours. Among his fellow passengers are the charming Netta Pryce and her stern aunt, three RAF officers-O'Rourke, Loftus, and Williamson-Mr. Hensley from Baghdad’s public works, Captain Smethurst, General Poli, and an Armenian mother with her son.
The day before departure, Pyne discusses a news item with General Poli about a fugitive financier, Samuel Long, rumored to be hiding in South America. That evening, Pyne finds Captain Smethurst in a nightclub, clearly troubled but refusing to explain. Smethurst's cryptic response to Pyne’s confession of being a “confidence trickster” hints at a shared secret.
The next day, the journey is fraught with challenges, including the bus getting stuck in desert mud. As the passengers work to free the vehicle, Smethurst is found dead in his seat. Initially, it appears he may have struck his head during the bumpy ride, but upon closer inspection, Pyne finds a small stab wound. Smethurst’s death is shrouded in mystery as passengers recall conversations hinting at secrets and betrayals.
Pyne pieces together the clues: Smethurst knew Samuel Long was among them, disguised as Loftus. Loftus’s quick diagnosis of Smethurst’s death and attempts to mislead others reveal his guilt. Confronted, Long confesses-having bought Loftus’s identity to evade capture. Smethurst, once his admirer at Eton, recognized him, prompting the fatal cover-up.
Before justice can be served, Long lights a cigarette laced with poison and dies, escaping punishment one final time.
