Went back and listened side by side to this whistle and the current whistle on 3751, an LM-540 6-chime, and I think you have a point. Though not identical, they're darn close. I'll concede your point. By the way, the 3751 class carried LM-192 5 chimes throughout their service lives whereas the other ATSF 4-8-4 classes had the six chimes. The LM-192s were designated for freight and switching locomotives. Even thought the 3751s were passenger power from day one, they were given freight whistles.

Try this again! Whistle was a SP 6 chime owner was on the crew. It is not nor does it sound anything like Bill Howes jr whistle that 614 carried during her Chessie or Ace days. Most of these NJ/NY trips 614 carried a Reading RR 6 chime from G3 219 the last pacific built in the USA.

I'm pretty sure this is the steam whistle that Bob Swanson designed to sound like a K5LA air horn. At least that's what Ross Rowland told me. The whistle was purchased by a CSX executive, on his own dime, to be used on the Safety Express trips. He has subsequently loaned it to Ross for other occasions.

The audio sure brings back memories of those trips. One fioend told me about this trip with the unique whistle, differnt from the Reading "G" and the UP whistle. Do you have more on this trip, particularily starting out from Ridgewood?

I'm not saying she didn't wear a K5LA-inspired whistle...but I'm almost positive it wasn't this particular trip. You can definitely hear 6 notes in this whistle, not 5. Plus, it sounds exactly like an ATSF 6 chime, and nothing like a K5LA.

That would not have been me.I never cursed out anyone for talking to me. I have more audio of both the 6/8/97 and 10/26/97 trips, as well as video of many of the other runs. I'll be posting it as time allows. That is not an ATSF whistle, by the way, According to Ross Rowland, that is a steam whistle that Bob Swanson designed to sound like a K5LA air horn.

Thanks. I see you uploaded the audio. Do you have the remaing of the previopus track w the ATSF whistle? Curious on 6-8-97 trip, were you the one standing next to me in beginning of trip. I started commenting about the whsitle and you cursed at me for talking in you r recording?
