AUDIO: DC Air Traffic Control deals with an unknown aircraft in the restricted airspace.

On January 6, 2024 at 11:30PM, DC Air Defense and DCA Potomac Approach air traffic controllers had to deal with an unknown aircraft near Reagan Airport. The Air Force attempted to hail the unknown multiple times to no avail. As the unknown was traveling at only 30knots, the suspicion is a flock of geese, a balloon, or a drone.

Around 40 mph. Weird speed, too fast for geese, too slow for most aircraft except maybe ultralights.

@@jasonjoyce7835 Not too fast for geese, even in still air. They aren't light, and need to cruise at a good airspeed to keep from falling out of the sky. Their speed will drop when climbing, and go up when descending. You'll note that the altitudes mentioned, varied by hundreds of feet. If you think a goose can't fly 40mph, you haven't seen many geese flying. Here is what the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says about migrating geese: These birds tend to fly around 40 miles per hour during migration, though that can increase up to 70 miles per hour if they catch a strong tailwind. Migrating groups tend to have 30 to 100 birds. The ground speed that radar measures, due to winds aloft, can be wildly different from the airspeed of the bird, airplane, drone, or whatever. Give a 30mph bird a 60mph tailwind, radar sees it doing 90mph. So, the speeds of 30, 33, 35 and 40 knots are perfectly consistent with ANY type of bird at altitude in unknown winds. Winds even 100 feet above ground, are usually a lot higher than what you feel on the ground.
