I see a setup where a mixer is connected to a audio interface to computer for live stream. what is the purpose of the audio interface in this setup? i thought the purpose of audio interface is to convert analog to digital.

One use case that you forgot to mention that can help people decide is if you want to have a bunch of different instruments and inputs, but you don't need to record them all at the same time. Buying a mixer, plugging everything in and then recording. What you need is easier and cheaper than buying a udio interface with lots of inputs. I think in the reality an audio interface with lots of inputs is helpful when you're trying to record multitracks simultaneously for multiple instruments. If you're doing what at a time recording but just wants everything plugged in so you don't have to plug in and out. Then a mixer works fine

@@kettnercreative Well, I'm currently occupied with binging all of the videos you've created throughout the channels history. I'm sure most of them will include answers to questions I might have, and even more will answer questions I didn't even know to ask. When I finish watching them, if I have any more questions, I'll let you know. I think where a lot of people get lost/confused is in that space between absolute novice and intermediate hobbyist. Little tricks, mistakes, or techniques that most people "in the know" wouldn't even consider addressing because it's second nature to them, or because the beginners are too embarassed to ask or, more likely, didn't even know to ask. Thank you for taking the time to respond to my comment. You're a fantastic educator, and I look forward to continuing to learn and grow as a musician.

I'm in the 1 - 300 dollar range. I'm just getting started and need an interface. Is there a big difference in sound within interfaces in this range? I would also like something with a user friendly DAW. I heard Presonus, which comes with studio 1, will get the job done but are the added features on something like a Volt 276 worth the extra couple hundred?

4:37 Mixers with a built in audio interface like the MG10XU here are analog mixers with a small built in section for the audio interface section and the last stereo channel is enabled from a switch that either keeps the mixer 100% analog or the last stereo input switching to the audio interface part. So mixers are large because +90% of the size is for the analog mixer part. Not just knobs.

Hard to say. For my money, the Soundcraft Signature 12 is in an awkward middle ground. I think we're on the brink of seeing a proper 10-12 channel digital mixer from Yamaha/Allen Heath/etc. Around the $1000 mark with flying faders, multiple fx, multi-track recording, many aux outputs, etc.

Thanks for the video. What if I would need to record multiple instruments (not live and one at a time) but don't want to connect/ unplug each time from the two channel desktop models, would a mixer with usb interface be the better way to go? And as far as scratch tracks, would a recordable mixer be preferable and then download the best tracks out to the DAW for further refinement? Or, is that idea a long way to go to basically get ideas out to a DAW. What I'm thinking about is the workflow and how composing music is bit stifling when working with a DAW.

To get true stereo sound, is it best to have both XLR (Left & Right) from the powered speakers to Channel 1 (Left) Channel 2 (Right) on the Mixer. I am using a Profx 10v3. Then I would Pan channel 1 all the way left and channel 2 all the way to the right. Is this the best way to get a better stereo sound?

Recommend for doing drum covers? (I only want to 1 mic possibly 2 mic my drums) I’m familiar with mixers but not good with DAW just learning. Sounds like the mixer is the controls on the DAW? Whereas with the interface you control all the eq and such on the DAW (except the gain) what I am seeing is that there are average mixers are cheaper than an average interface. So I’m leaning toward mixer bc I’m more familiar and they seem cheaper, just not as portable. Thoughts for drum recording and doing covers with them?

@@kettnercreative Sorry in advance for the long message. But in fact I want to connect the Mackie to my Focusrite, to benefit from the voice effects on DAW. Because I love recording my live sessions, and in my case with the DAW I assign an effect to a guitar, and as the Mackie in interface mode does not add its effects (voice effects), I have to connect my guitar to my Focusrite and my microphone to the Mackie in standard mode (since in standard mode the two analog outputs of the 6V+ output the same sound and are not separate). When I read it again, everything is not clear, but I hope that my case is understandable. Ps: this is also a Google translation. thanks again !

My gut reaction is that you would be better off with an audio interface that has built in Midi. Presonus Audiobox and SSL2+ come to mind. With house/edm/dance music, a lot of producers find midi very handy. Not a lot of audio mixers have midi built in.

actually you didnt mention one of the most important facts. that the mixers are not able to do multitrack recording you just have 1 stereo Track to edit on the computer. with an audio interface you can edit each channel seperate depending how many channels the interface has.
