Tom, these livestreams have been incredibly educational and enjoyable, I bought the practice project but haven’t had time to work on it just yet, but all the same I hope you’ll continue doing the livestreams. Your tutorials are great as well and you have become one of the leading educators in the audio post-production field. Keep it up man, good stuff!

Hi Tom, when mixing score, what are some guides to not step over what the music editor /composer delivered? Do only the directors and producers have say to remove elements from music stems? Do cue changes land on the mixer or does it go back to the music editor/composer for revision? Simply letting them know a cue was changed in the mix sufficient? 44:59

I usually start with what’s in front of me. Then if an issue comes up while working with the director I will make suggestions. If there is a music editor or willing composer I will kick the changes back to them. If not, I can do them myself

Sorry for missing the live stream but these have been amazing. Thanks Tom for sharing your workflow and knowledge. I had a question about these final stages in the last mix pass of a project. 1. When would you use a sidechain to help make room for dialogue while still keeping the music blasting per directors notes usually? 2. When exporting all your assets, 5.1, st, etc; how do you make sure the discreet mono channels correspond with the theater that is being played back? i.e L R C LFE RS LS in that order? or does it change with wherever you're sending it out to? Sorry if its not clear, can clarify if needed.

1. Never. 2. Import after bounce

Hi Thomas! At what level are your speakers calibrated? For Dolby 6 it is 85 dB SPL, but in my small room that results in my mix being way too quiet. Do you use a different level for a near-field monitor setup? Thanks so much for sharing all this knowledge :)

Dolby 7 is 85dBc actually. I usually work at about 82 in my room

Can you make a full post production series for davinci resolve? Maybe with the same if not similar workflow as the pro tools series. Thank you so much for the videos. They are very underrated.

It will be a lot of work but I’ll consider it

I work in Fairlight. Whilst it’s definitely getting better and has potential I’d really recommend sticking to protools unless you absolutely must use Resolve. I have to deal with a lot of bugs and workarounds.
