I use the SoundSmith anti skate method where the stylus moved very slowly toward the center on a blank test track.

Ohh buddy! This is the wrong side of the disk... the blank side for the anti skating calibration. The ink may damage the needle.

The NUMARK PRO TT1 is equipped with the same type of tonearm. I bought it second hand at a low price, but obviously it has problems. The gimbal assembly on the tonearm is a bit wobbly, the anti-skate doesn't work at all because the brass rod at the base is broken off. The basic quartz lock is perfect, but the pitch control is twitchy. Strangely, the potmeter is fine, it's been cleaned up, the LCD display on the player says it sets the speed to a decimal precision. What is the exact type of this tone arm so I can buy one somewhere.

Mine "works," but for a cartridge that needs 2 g of force I had to set the antiskate to 1. That was the only way to get it to center. It's not ideal, but I had to live with it. Oh, and now that I'm packing up the TT to sell it, I can't remove the platter. It's as if it locked into place.

How was your tone arm affected prior to you fixing it? My LP120x anti skate was set at 2 (using the base cartridge w/tracking force of 2) but when I used that same mat in the video, it would pull my tone arm hard outwards. Now I have my anti skate set to about less than 1. Is my anti skate broken like yours or should I even mess with it since my tone arm doesn’t move any more at this setting?

Mine is set to about one using the Soundsmith deadwax test. Best for performance across the record. So that may be good. Nothing is 100%. If you get any skips add slightly more. 1- 1.5 should be sufficient.

Setting antiskate with a blank record, it is possible, but you HAVE to set the tracking force to as close to zero as possible and still touch the surface, if you use the normal tracking force, it will always skate to the middle. A better solution is a testrecord with the apropriate test signal and an oscilloscope, or a software that turns your audio input on your computer into an oscilloscope for audio measuring. The testrecord you get for this will have instructions on how to use it properly. I would not use a blank record at all on any pivoted system. A passive tangiantial system, then the blank record delivers better, but still not as good as a proper test record.

Please people, do not use mirrors and grooveless records for AS settings! It´s wrong and such setting is strongly overcompenstating skating forces... Correct behaviour of cartridge on this grooveless record is that the cartridge is skating towards the center of the record (almost just like if the AS is totally off). If the AS is set so the cartridge stays on the place - AS is way too high. If you have more expensive TT, you can simply adjust it to match AS knob number with tracking force and it wil be +- correct. If course cheap TT like this doesn´t have a very trusty scale on the knob so the only right way is test record and distortion measurement on each channel. (lowest possible with minimal difference between channels)

This is so true. Antiskating tests with grooveless records and with CDs are absolutely misleading and will give you false results. There are different forces in the grooves comparing forces on a flat, clean surface.

Best way is to have a slow movement towards center while testing in the blank run out area...yes, the arm should slowly move inward...not stand still. I found my setting just a hair over cartridge setting.
