The LP 120 I had did the same and dropped the needle way to quickly. I read somewhere that the fix was to leave the lever in the raised position when out of use as you can still clip the tonearm in its rest. It worked perfectly after that. I can't recall the reason right now but give it a try, it may work for you.

I have a 1968 Pioneer PL-740 (was my dad's) that is Direct Drive (no belt, thank goodness) and is fully automatic. It has that weird head shell no one makes anymore. I slapped a new cartridge on it as the one on it was OLD. It is the perfect turntable for juniors who want to get into vinyl. The tonearm is fully balance adjustable with anti-skating just like the more expensive units. What is obvious to the observers of all these turntables is that they mostly come from the same factory. It's like a GM car. Same stuff, different body. What is cool is that this PL-740 still works as new. The plastic over is really scratched up. Got to talk to my dad about that, but he's pass on to his next adventure.

I love this turntable. I bought mine six months ago - I wore my last turntable out playing records eight hours a day whilst working from home during the pandemic. This was even a bit under my budget but I settled on it because of so many positive reviews and that headshell - so sexy ☺️ I haven't been disappointed at all, fantastic sound and terrific build quality. I upgraded the cartridge last week to the VMN95e and although the sound was no slouch before, the upgrade was worth the £40, I have a lot of records and many old ones, as long as you give a good sweep with your cleaning brush there is no more noise than the original cartridge, but the elliptical stylus really brings out detail and punch. A very worthwhile investment for sure. I'm glad you are enjoying your LP3, I would recommend it to anybody.

Hi Record-ology, great looking record player. Thank you for sharing. The rubber mat for your model is 4.5mm in thickness according to Audio-Technica. Use a piece of rolled up scotch tape to pick up dust particles from the mat. A rinse in the shower will for sure fresh it up. Dry it by pressing with a clean cloth towel. Do not use paper tissues because that will leave tiny fibers on it. To clean the lid, gently wipe with a microfiber cloth. Do not use pressure. Use this microfiber cloth for the lid only! If you use the same on a bench or a table, it will pick up breadcrumbs and that will scratch the lid.

Just bought one, no one in all the LP3 vids mentions the aesthetics of the LP3 in much detail, let me tell you as someone who studies creative aesthetics, the LP3 is easily the best looking turntable on the market, including far more expensive turntables! It balances modern sleek design with a subtle sense of retro about it. It wouldn't look out of place in the 1970s as it doesn't in 2023/4. I could go on, but I won't. Needless to say, as someone who studies & researches Art, Creativity & Aesthetics, I've just bought one in white to stick in my Home Art Gallery Creative space, on a plinth. I had a budget of £600; But after looking at EVERY turntable out there, the LP3 in white with red cartridge head won by an absolute mile aesthetically; even though originally I was strongly inclined towards a Direct Drive Turntable, which Audio Technica also won that category with the various AT 120s, any of them! Sound wise, I'm sure it will more than good enough, unless you are an expert nit-picking Audiophile! Most of the more expensive turntables are very boring to look at Aesthetically and design wise, and to me in the visual arts, that counts!! Audio Technica simply design the best looking turntables by far! I may not be an expert in the exacting finesse of specific musical tones and specific sound registers etc but I know as music as well as most outside the expert realm, and I AM a highly gifted specialist in understanding beauty and artistic design in everyday objects. There simply isn't a better looking turntable on the market! And when I've finished installing my LP3 on a white plinth, with the right lighting, it will look exactly what it is, a sleek yet subtle retro/modern work of Art. Hope can it be both retro & modern? That's the genius of its design! The founder of Audio Technica was Japanese remember, and I can see the Japanese influence in this LP3! Look closely at the curve of the base and the lid! This is just a square flat box like most, it hints at the historical design of Japanese Pagoda design, and gives an Aesthetic sense of almost floating lightly on whatever surface it's sits on. Most casual observers won't understand or see the sense of serene Japanese Buddhist influence in the design, but it's there! Which makes sense when you think about, after all, is not listening to music an almost transcendental spiritual experience! Think about it, and have a good meditative look at the LP3. Namaste! 🙏

I think I read somewhere that the return is triggered by the tonearm skating quickly at the end of play, so if there is enough vinyl at the end of your smaller record, the return should still work. That said, my memory isn't great, and testing that theory could be risky, so probably better to just pay attention and set it back yourself when it's done.

A dust cover is designed to do one thing and one thing only and that is to make the turntable look complete. They will never keep dust off of anything. Even itself. If you have a detachable dust cover, always remove it before you play records. When you're done playing records, put the dust cover back on and go watch TV. Why, do you ask? With a turntable such as this very nice turntable being reviewed on this video and of course other more exotic turntables that cost $20,000, every single turntable enthusiast that knows the reproduction of vinyl sound while playing the record will tell you to remove the dust cover because the dust cover will cause unnecessary Rumble and hum. It may not be noticeable to your ears but trust me if you remove the dust cover if you have a turntable such as this, you will hear your records sounding so much better. There IS also a lot of scientific things that go along with it while you have the dust cover down and playing a record at the same time. Believe it or not, if you play a record with the dust cover down at the same time you're actually increasing vibration and the tendency for the records to skip and also cause the records to become more dusty because of the spinning of the platter versus The tonearm traveling towards the center of the record. This will cause unwanted distortion and noise particularly towards the end of a record. I read about this subject around 30 years ago and have never played a record with the dust cover on since. The audio playback is noticeably better without the dust cover attached to the turntable. It may sound strange to some of you but trust me. Look it up online and you will find many threads and information an education as to why you should never use the dust cover attached to your turntable while playing a record.

Well as another KZbin reviewer stated, this is a lifestyle unit. Just great for folks looking for a durable, versatile and decent vinyl TRACTOR. It's really not bad, but, I don't think this has pretense to impress any audiophiles. After I viewed another of Record-ology videos, I couldn't help notice his zealous enthusiasm for the white version, which I had to agree, is rather attractive and pretty irresistible! I don't know how to explain it, but somehow, the better it looks the better it sounds! Of course I had to find one! I love mine, and am looking forward to upgrading the AT91 cartridge to a VM95E. I am also looking for a white slip mat too! The AT-LP3X is bit of an odd beast though in one regard;. It actually purports to be far more than it is, and comes equipped with a Moving Coil Cartridge switch. This is bit odd for a Vinyl Merry Go Round at this low price and quality level...(about $259.00 for the black). Note, that at the time of this post, the white is in short supply, so the on line scalpers are currently offering them at about $359. But, Bulletin!!!.... there is a great alternative....An almost identical unit, in gunmetal gray, called the AT-LP2X, and is available exclusively through the Guitar Centers. So, If white is not really necessary for your wheelhouse, you can snap one of those up for a mere $199.95. The big difference from the LP3X, other than color, is that the AT-LP2X does not come with the Moving Coil Switch. The previously mentioned scalpers, are apparently buying these at full retail, and are currently listing the LP2X's on Ebay for $300 and up.

Talking about speed issues, my LP60X always spun just a little too fast. I purchased a strobe disc as my guide to accurate speed. After quite a few attempts with my screwdriver, the lines for the 33 rpm were finally stationary. I figured after fitting an elliptical stylus and an acrylic platter mat, I might as well go the whole hog and get the speed of the 60X right up to higher end standard. Nothing like a strobe disc to sort things like that out.

If you're only speaking of the tone arm, then yes, this is closer to the LP120. I particularly like that it has a proper counterweight, anti-skate adjustment, and removable headshell. But as a unit, there's more in common with the LP60. LP60/LP3 is a two speed; LP120 is three speed LP60/LP3 is a belt drive via DC motor; LP120 is direct drive LP60/LP3 is full auto, LP120 is full manual LP120 has pitch control If one were so inclined, this could be easily modified for 78 rpm and to add pitch control.
@xaenon
@xaenon 2 жыл бұрын
If you have a record that triggers the auto-return before it's finished playing, there's a small modification you can perform. Relax - it's easy to do, completely reversible, requires no special skills, and isn't going to void any warranties. Basically, what you are doing is disabling the automatic features. All you'll need is a small screwdriver and two or three minutes of your time. 1) Remove the platter and set it aside. 2) Located directly behind the platter spindle you'll find a large plastic gear. That's the cycle cam. 3) Using the proper-sized screwdrive, remove the retaining screw from the cycle cam's pivot. 4) Lift the cycle cam from its pivot. Have a tissue or something ready so you can put it down; that gear has some lithium grease on it. If you want to make sure you don't lose the screw or washer, loosely screw them back onto the pivot. DO NOT remove the little metal mechanism from the cycle cam. 5) Make sure your hands are clean and reinstall the platter. Congratulations. The turntable is now fully manual. The platter will start rotating when you swing the tone arm toward the record, and will shut off again when you return the tone arm to its rest, but the auto-return and automatic-start features will be disabled. To re-enable the automatic features, reinstall the cycle cam. Make sure you don't have any grease from the cycle cam on your hands when you go to reinstall the belt. After reinstalling the platter, spin the platter by hand a few times to reset the mechanism. One caveat you should be aware of - while the cycle cam is removed from the turntable *DO NOT PRESS THE START BUTTON.* No, it won't damage anything if you do, but you'll find the motor will continue to run even with the tone arm on its rest, and pushing the STOP button will do NOTHING. Reinstalling the cycle cam temporarily and allowing the machine to cycle will correct the problem. If you want to disable the automatic functions permanently, you'll have to remove the cycle cam as well as the control linkages to the push buttons. You can access these from the bottom of the unit. By the way, this works for most all full-auto or semi-auto turntables, including the LP60 and its many clones.

I have found mine to have been a very good buy..However,just two things i have done to improve it...I painted the Turntable pink and i think it sounds much better by taking the cart off and just dropping the tonearm down onto the record without any cart/stylus.....Particularly effective when playing Reggie Dwight.

Can you tel us how to improve a victrola VTA65?

I know this is going to make me sound like a jerk. Trust me when I say I'm trying not trying to be, but... here goes. Don't spend a lot of money on your VTA65. It just isn't worth it. Stereos like that are built specifically to meet a low, low Walmart price, and they aren't made to last. If that's what you can afford, brother - well, that's what you can afford. I get it. That said, you're still gonna spend some money to make it better. Let's try to spend it in a POSITIVE direction. The most significant flaw in those all-in-one things (and briefcase players as well) is their tiny, crummy little speakers. They sound like crap. Unfortunately, it's not really practical to open the unit up to upgrade them, so let's bypass the internal hardware entirely. On the rear of your unit, you'll find a pair of LINE-OUT jacks. That's the ticket. You can buy a pair of Edifier R980T amplified speakers for like $75 (they also sell a pair of R1280Ts for like $100, a somewhat better option). Connecting them to those LINE-OUT jacks will yield some startling results. Seriously, you won't realize how bad the built-in speakers sound until you compare them to REAL speakers. The cool thing is, they'll also work with your MP3 player, CD player, what have you, and they'll also work with whatever you eventually replace that VTA65 with. Another alternative would be one of those inexpensive 'LePai' or 'Lepy' mini-amps they sell on eBay, and use it to drive some Dayton B452 or B462s, or even some inexpensive thrift store bookshelf speakers. Even a decent set of computer speakers would be an improvement, so long as they're not those $14 things you might find at Walmart or Dollar general. Note that better speakers won't address ALL the flaws, but it's the most bang for the buck starting point. Also, most likely the VTA65 shipped with a sapphire stylus. Those are only good for 40-60 hours of use before they become worn. A worn stylus WILL damage records. Upgrade that to a DIAMOND stylus, which lasts much longer and tens to treat your records much better. That would be the maximum money I'd spend on the VTA65 itself. Check tracking force; for that type of cartridge 4-6 grams is normal. If it's significantly higher than that, you'll need to find a way to lighten up the tracking. If it's too low, that can cause skipping. Beyond that - dude, save your cash for a better turntable. Don't fall for the 'I'm gonna make a silk purse out of a sow's ear' thing I see so many people fall for. I'll be happy to answer any further questions you might have.

I have bought so many TT's coz I was wanting to find the one that had that sound & feel like I can remember it as a child. I came across this machine and I fell in love! However, I have gone from 1 Black to 2 Whites and all 3 have had problems with the anti skate! The 1st one worked fine for a few months until it didn't & the other 2 were faulty from day 1 so I gave up on this machine. Very disappointing.

You can download an app on your phone, lay it on the turntable whilst turning and it will give you an accurate read out for 33 and 45 (you need to adjust the speed yourself) that will give an indication of how off your speeds are then you will have to go in the bottom and adjust with a very fine screwdriver. It's also worth checking how even your turntable is - there a spirit level app you can get too. Just check at four points on your platter to check it is laying perfectly flat.

@@fab208athome Hi Dave, the faster than 33 (33.9 in my case) is not much of a problem but speed stabilty IS and varies according to the app from 02.3 to 03.8 (!!), sometimes wow even over 0.4, which for me is easy noticable. Concerning the spirit level app, I'll try that but it is with my measurement quite good, but I'll try that. Thanks for the advice.

The biggest thing I hate about this player is that it doesn't have "peeled cable" support for older speakers. I thought every single player would at least have that. It's like they want to up the chances that a person has to buy new speakers of the same brand along with it...

It doesent have an amplifier so even if the connectors were different it wouldn’t power older speakers. That’s a line output to connect to a receiver just like a vintage turntable. Powered speakers are designed to take a direct line input because they have a built in amplifier.
