Biased? Ah well, to make you even more happy as a buyer that has a chance to directly compare the M40x with M50x, Shure840, Oppo PM3, DT770, and many others, I'd say they are on the same lvl, just different preference, with more durable build. So, good buy for us :)
@MilGrip768 жыл бұрын
+Muhammad Kharismawan You can't be serious.
@MuhammadKharismawan8 жыл бұрын
Ah, you don't believe me? OK, for PM3, it's good, and overall it is an upgrade, but only just slightly, they sound quite similar IMO with no glaring advantage given by the Oppo, thus I regard them not worth it as the 3-4x price difference. DT770 is noteworthy in its bass and has good soundstage, but that's all, it has anemic mids that I dislike, and adding thicker pads (HM5 on mine) on the M40x make the soundstage on the AT as big on the Beyer, 840 does sound balanced and fun, but my sound preference on its mids isn't as favorable, I like the mids on M40x more, and on build, The Shure is crumbling at every minute I hold it. (V-Moda too bassy, XB950 is just bass monster with surprisingly good detail) Etc etc. It is subjective, but after testing many closed cans, the one I deemed a worthy "upgrade" for me is to M70x, of which sound quality upgrade is vastly apparent on 1st few minute of listen. As you can see, I put a lot of focus on mids, especially on the female vocal performance (a bit too particular about this one) , I also like a good deal of detail, I don't like too many bass as I it can be a bit too distracting, though I crave for them when watching movies. I do have my other headphones for it so it's alright for me. It all depends on preferences, song collections, and priorities really.
@MilGrip768 жыл бұрын
+Muhammad Kharismawan ... a lot of description, without much substance, eg what songs? how do various instruments sound diff from can to can? what are the bitrates? how much amplification is avail to each? source? if you have ever read an in-print review of a set of speakers, or like component, they have a test set of songs, where the qualities of each are given ratings and description, and compared to a reference. otherwise, it's all arbitrary, and liable to change with the days weather forecast. it's unfortunate, that most all online subjective reviews are constructed in similar fashion. no comparisons to live music, reference speakers, ABing side by side, with established benchmarks. Tyll and Bob Katz remarked on this matter in their "Big Sound" headphone review. Bob, even after hearing some of the better flagship headphones, commented on how poor they were relative to good home speakers. The use of correction curves was what brought the final sound into line with what they both thought was correct. didn't mean for this to become a megapost, but things in the headphone world tend to be simplified down to a point of vagueness, where almost everyting can be said to be good or better, despite serious shortcomings.
@MuhammadKharismawan8 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah it does. Though it all in the end depends on the satisfaction the buyer get out of it no? I do admit I'm being very vague on my reply, but it isn't like I'd change my own opinion from me trying out things using my own ear and my own set of priorities.

Not enough sub bass, treble too boosted, comfort is shit. The K361 is the obvious best choice nowadays.. but I still somehow love these. Sure I wouldn't mind more subbass, but the bass shape on these is so perfect, it somehow makes up for the roll off. It's got that nice punch without sounding muddy to me. And the treble peaks, sure, they're siblant, piercing and sharp. But only in certain cases. Maybe 1-2%. The rest is beautiful. I love the sparkle and clarity. And I never would've found out I like sparkle and clarity without these. As for comfort, yeah, it's shit. The pads were made for a 5 year old Japanese child and the headband might as well be pure metal with how little padding there is. Grow some hair out for padding, carefully stretch the headband and earpads, survive, then get some brainwavz pads for $15 and never look back. The 361 is the safe option. It's flat. If you like flat, go for it. If you want something exciting, the M40X still kicks ass. You'll hate it at first and it'll hate you, but give it time and you'll never want to put them away again.

I listened to them ignoring name brands and pricing. This head phone seams to be well balanced with out the cheesy bass boosting technology which would make it impossible to record with. Can confirm that the pads are a really good fit for the M40X. I tried all 3 of Brainwavz's offerings and all of them butchered the low end on the M40X for some reason. These pads are a massive step up in comfort from the stock pads (though the Brainwavz velour definitely feels the best), and insulate better as well. Regarding the sound, it must be due to the better sound isolation that the music sounds "cleaner" and more neutral. The stock pads had nothing wrong with them acoustics-wise, just the terrible ergonomics. The cowhides also fit over my ears better (I have large ears). I have the M30X hooked up to my PC though, and I must say that the Brainwavz velours are a perfect fit for them.

Like many of you, I took Z’s advice and purchased the ZMF Cowhides for the m40x. The sound changed from the stock pads but here’s why I feel it’s for the better. Sound is subjective, but for me the mid bass on these stock is a little too much and while it sounds great for the most part, fatigue is an issue with not only the sound but comfort. The ZMF’s pretty much tame both of these concerns for me. The bass is still there but a little more refined and the distance between the pad and ears makes it easy to keep these on your head for hours.... and that is worth the price for me. Considering the headphones are now $79 and the pads $50, you’re looking at a set of $129 headphones that you can wear and enjoy for hours in comfort with a much better soundstage than stock. Thanks for the vids, your ears seem to be on par with mine and I enjoy the insight you bring to the table.

I don't get why people find these uncomfortable. Of course the pads are not exactly clouds to the ears, but they're far from being bad, really. I can use it for 5 hours straight with no problems whatsoever, even though the pressure to the ears can be a little annoying at times. As for sound quality, I was honestly expecting more. But yes, it's pretty good. Clarity and instrument separation are nice, imaging is great and it boggles my mind how people say these lack bass, THEY DON'T. At least for me, they're right on the threshold of having too much bass. Just for reference, i'm coming from a TDK MP100 and a Sony MDR-XB650 as daily drivers (both great headphones, even though the latter is kinda bassy) and ocasionally using my old Sennheisers (RS120 and HD425). My main use is music and then movies/videos, I wouldn't recomend the M40x if gaming is your priority. Now, keep in mind that the M40x is somewhat V-shaped, in some tracks it's clearly noticeable how the vocals felt sidelined in the background while the highs stand out, bass is not boomy but the sound definitely feels a bit muddy at times. Despite that, I do like the sound signature. Well, overall the M40x is pretty good and at its price range it's a serious contender, it's as good as some $500 plus headphones. And to be fair, any closed headphone can sound muddy, everyone can have a different experience due to the anatomy of the ear and pressure sensitivity, it all comes to personal taste too. I would say give it a try and don't listen to finicky audio engineers and wannabe audiophiles saying shit like "It'S pUrE GarBaGe" or whatever. BTW, a friend who works in the audio industry tested dozens of different headphones at a local store (even some expensive ones) and ended up getting the M40x since he really liked it, so I guess it means something :)

I’ve owned both of these headphones, owned the m40’s and then the m50’s. The m40’s are a little softer, very easy listening and great for the money. But the sound quality is clearly better on the m50’s, much clearer, punchier. Little bit brighter which isn’t to everyone’s taste, however these headphones are held back if you don’t use an amp. Even a portable FIIO amp transforms these headphones. Widens the soundstage and really just makes them that extra bit better. Just broke my m50’s after 7 years of owning, sat on the ear cup so it snapped the joint. Going to just tape it up solid and then invest in a pair of m70’s, see what I think of them!

@ESKATEUK4 жыл бұрын
tollph3 hello, I think it probably depends on what you’re used to. A lot of cheaper headphones offer huge amounts of bass and then people think that is the norm. So when they get a more expensive pair of headphones, usually the bass is not dominant. With monitor headphones it’s important every part of the sound stage is clear. Have you broken the m40x in? Both my m40s and m50s sounded much better after a week of breaking in on medium volume music. Also, do you have a an amp? I use a FIIO portable amp which really transforms the headphones. Is there any chance you can return your m40’s? As I believe a pair of m50’s would suit your needs a bit better. If not just try get used to the sound signature, realise that headphones aren’t supposed to have super heavy rumbly bass, and headphones like beats which have huge amounts of bass, have terrible mids, awful treble and no soundstage. But people who are used to this, still think that they’re the best headphones going, when they’re really not. So try getting used to the m40’s, adapt your listening to a more neutral sound signature, invest in a fiio amp+dac. And if you can swap for the m50’s then give that a go, as to me the m50’s are unbeatable. Hope that helps, sorry for the slightly jumbled reply, let me know what you do.

tollph3 there is also a chance that if you bought them used that the speakers are blown, sorry I only just saw that you said you got them used. Which obviously makes things like returning harder. Do they crackle, or sound vibratey at all? If they do then they’re 100% blown.
@turtleneck3694 жыл бұрын
@@ESKATEUK no they do not crackle or sound broken just too "Tinny", i think i'm just probably not used to the flat monitor sound signature ,also i don't dedicated have amp or DAC, i tried them through old(25+years) hi-fi SONY stereo system (which is connected to my pc through RCA -- 3.5mm jack)using 6.3mm headphone output and they did sound better as any headphone i tried connecting it to.... Also they sound better with HYPERX Cloud earpads and original and are much more comfortable ,stock pads are trash its unbereable for longer listening.Maybe i will buy new m40x and se if they sound same and if they do will return them and keep old ones just to be sure if there is nothing wrong with them and that iam just not used to flat sounding studio headphones. Also purchase brainwavz pads they actually have which will also fit my hyperx and m40x so i can experiment a bit more , maybe buy cheap FiiO amp/dac in the future ,heard they are really good for the price, which one would u recommend more around 100€ Fiio q1 2(100€) or... E10k OLYMPUS 2 (85€)? Thanks.
@ESKATEUK4 жыл бұрын
tollph3 yeah give it a go my friend, and I have the fiio e17, highly recommend that one, very well built and fantastic for the price. You can get one used for around £50 so recommend that option. I do find the m40’s a little on the tinnier side, it does take some getting used to but as you say an amp does help. If you can ever get your hands on a pair of m50’s to listen to give them a go. All the best

For years I tell people, the M40x's are sweet. I use them in the studio, I trust them. $79 if you look around. The only problem is they break so damn easily at the last yoke swivel point. Good old black duct tape does the trick.

Do you really need angled pads? I have the m40x with hm5 angled sheepskin and they start hurting where the padding is 2,5cm as the m40x cup does not really swivel. Also is the sheepskins worth the 2x price? I would like to try the straight pleather hm5s.
@hirumi92 жыл бұрын
isn't the point of using angled pads because the headphone doesn't swivel enough?
@osquu2 жыл бұрын
@@hirumi9 No, quite the opposite as the swivel isn't enough for countering the imbalanced pad, leading to pressure on the thicker side of the pad.
