Good review. I'm glad someone describes them the same as I hear them, except for one thing, I don't find the treble grainy. Before I bought them I saw dozens of reviews on Amazon saying they had a flat frequency response, and how neutral they are.You're right, they they're neither flat nor neutral.. Nevertheless, I can still enjoy them.

Do you have any headphone recommendation for music production / studio monitor at the same price range of the m40x or m50x? I'm planning to use it in my home studio from music production to mixing and mastering. Thanks!
@WheezyTech3 жыл бұрын
My personal choice, as a total amateur so its just my opinion. I'd use any half decent closed back as a monitor, great choices are AKG K371 and K361, Beyerdynamic DT770Pro, as well as Sony MDR7506, Audio-Technica M50/40 for tracking and when you need isolation. The K371 is probably the most "neutral" from a production standpoint. The DT770 the most comfortable. The MDR7506 has a rather forward sound sig that can bring your vocals forward so you can hear yourself better when tracking but its not accurate for making mix decisions on it. M50/40 are good, better built alternatives to the MDR7506 but pricier. And then for mixing and mastering I'd alternate between speakers and an open backed headphone like the Sennheiser HD560S, HD650/6XX or Hifiman Sundara. I realise all this is more than you asked for, so to answer your question more specifically. Probably the AKG K371, it's not the most well built headphone but its very well tuned, very detailed, easy to drive from an audio interface and a great all rounder in general. Basically perfect for what you want.
@ChrisFoxPH3 жыл бұрын
@@WheezyTech Thank you so much for the detailed response. I appreciate this bigtime. Your thoughts on AKG K92? This is what I have so far. Is it worth the change to the K371 or should I just stick with the K92?
@WheezyTech3 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisFoxPH I have not heard the K92 but I have heard the K371 and I've seen the frequency response graph of the K92. But with that info I'd say yes the K371 is an upgrade.
@garyluciani3703 жыл бұрын
Yea, Noel's right, the sound of the m40x is nowhere close to how so many people have described them. The marketing blurb from audio technica says they are tuned flat for accurate frequency response. Nope , they have elevated bass and a couple of treble peaks that makes the treble sound sharp. I think it's clean treble but still pretty sharp. I've owned them now for 5 years and I like them as a fun headphone even though the bass is a little thick or fatty. I'm not knocking them, just saying , don't believe the descriptions of sound you may have heard

Are you wearing the K361 or the K371 headphones in this review? They both look so similar. The durability & quality of that hinge mechanism has been called into question by many.
@rouka76384 жыл бұрын
I am so thankful you cleared the misinformation up. I was planning on buying these in my pursuit of a decently cheap headphone for casual music and gaming (primarily because people can't stop singing praise for audio technica for their build quality and detail retrieval). Saw your k371 review and now they are my top choice. Funnily enough, the k371 cost a fair bit cheaper (it's about equivalent to 80$) than m40x in my country and may go for even cheaper on an upcoming sale. I have just one question, how detailed would you say the k371 in comparison to m40x are? I will be purchasing my first serious headphone and your channel helped me a lot, you've earned a sub.

K371 is in another league to the M40x in my opinion. Both in frequency response/ sound signature and detail. Definitely K371 for me.

M40X's are a tad over-hyped, but for the price range there really aren't many closed-back options out there that can do as many things as nicely as the M40X does (I guess the K361 is probably better now but aren't widely available yet). The pad swap is a must though, especially with the angled pads that add a bit more soundstage.
@WheezyTech5 жыл бұрын
I think yeah if you can live with the comfort issues and you dont mind that its not the 'neutral' headphone that its been hyped up to be then sure the M40x is ok for £70. I do quite enjoy the M40x with the sheepskin pads. But by the time you've added pads to it, the price creeps up to DT 770 territory, and thats such a good headphone, its hard to justify the M40x at that point.

If you were happy with the M40x and you already have upgraded pads you can use you could just get another one. I'm not especially a fan of them, I much prefer the DT 770 Pro but its hard to argue with the price. There is the MSR7 if you want a more fancy Audio-Technica but I dont know if its worth it over the M40x especially if you already have upgrades for that. The K361 is a good choice if you are looking for something a little more neutral, I'd probably take a K361 over the M40x but actually I'd spend the extra on the K371 myself. Theres also the Beyer Custom One Pro or even better the Custom Studio but I think thats out of that price range.

I had a weird experience getting these. A price match gone wrong... were supposed to have K270s in stock, but didn't. They said they did.... not the first time it's happened at those store... So they were trying to find alternatives with my criteria and budget (I need an all-rounder pair for tracking instruments and vox, mixing/mastering, critical listening, pleasure listening.... and cheap) I had previously vetoed the m40x as it was just over budget... while I was trying them I was shocked. I liked them more than the k270s, but even more shocking, I preferred the 40s to the 50s or 60s... they were both too bass heavy. If all 3 were the same price, I'd pick the m40x as best of the line... and they beat the AKGs I came in for... Since it wasn't the first time I'd been boned by online inventory having no bearing on reality... manager made good by letting loose of the m40x's for $65 out the door... the price match on the k270s basically. Still breaking in, I hope, clipping BAD... but gets better with every hour of play time. At more modest volume (until broken in), they sound balanced and detailed. I am used to flat meaning sterile and cold... but these are warm and lively. And stupid detail using them on a walk.... zero cable noise. None. I can't really review until after break in... but as of now, impressed.

Although I think you could've explained how does the earpads changes the sound. You said more colored, but in what way? Is it brighter, warmer, harsher or smoother? I understand that one earpad would change the sound differently to the others, but at least while you've had it might as well state it. Edit : I think these hype online applies to a lot of decent starting headphones from. And the main issue is we have people coming from earphone that came with phones, gaming headsets, and beats-like headphone. They don't have a good reference point, that's why they can't help but think that whatever they have is neutral.

M40X and M50X are quite expensive in NZ, but I gave the 50 a demo anyway when I was looking for a closed-back. Really liked the look and feel of the thing (especially in the grey colour I tried), but the intense claustrophobic sensation it gives you is not for me. It was a combination of clamp, frequency response and an in-your-face soundstage I found a bit fatiguing. Ended up with a Takstar Pro-82 for less than a third the cost. I tried M50x for a short time, and i couldn't stand them. Very sharp sibilant peak. I kind of get the impression that many headphone reviewers/users who hype these things have a pronounced case of... hearing damage. I also didn't prefer the Presonus Studio HD7, which appears to be manufactured by Superlux Taiwan and identical to something like HD681. Sharp piercing sibilant sound. What i'm wearing right now are Yoga CD-68, 40mm over-ears that i got for 20€ at a local musician store, rebranded to their house brand. They also pop up as Monacor MD-480, TDK (Europe) Classic DJ (not actually suitable for DJing, they're pretty leaky from outside in), and a number of other brands, some of them much more expensive. The differences extend to the cable quality, headband foam, colour of various bits, and pads, but people who have several different ones say they all sound the same. I fell in love with the sound the second i tried them at the store, just how inoffensive it is. The comfort... can be diabolical though. They can be bent to shape, but... well. Do you think you'd like to try finding a pair and give them a shot? RAA site has measured them twice, once as Brainwavz HM3 and once as Fisher Audio FA-004. Trying to apply AutoEQ in EqualizerAPO with either measurement tells me that the HM3 measurement is bonkers wrong, and the FA measurement is more close, but still a bit weird. There's are for sure spurious traits in the measurement. Compensating diffraction of measurement head against my ears simply makes no sense.

Spooky, I just got a pair of these used and was unimpressed by the sound. @WheezyTech5 жыл бұрын
I dont think they make bad monitors, as long as you arent expecting to hear a particularly accurate sound whilst monitoring. But for casual listening this headphone is way over hyped.

You're entitled to your opinion but the M40x has no soundstage either the M50x has *measurably* more sub-bass, the M40x more mid-bass. Both have a peaky treble but with the M50x perhaps having slightly higher peaks. HM5 pads increase soundstage on both models, ruin the sound on the M50x and make the M40x ok I suppose. *Measurably* makes the M40x more v-shaped, more sub-bass and higher treble peaks. Am I the onlyone going Bonkers with that Rattling background noise?

Yeah I fixed that now. It was a noisy switching power supply bleeding interference into the XLR cable

K361 if you are looking for a more neutral sound

@@WheezyTech sadly all of those other options over the ath m40x are a lot more expensive in my country, i haven't found a good alternative in the same price range. i think that is part of why there is a lot of hype.

@@WheezyTech different country different prices, the k361/k371 were being priced the same as the m50x but a little bit expensive , while the m40x on the other hand was 72$ more cheaper so should i go for the m40x instead? Ive got an aftermarket pads for only 6.5$ from a local brand

Cheap closed headphones with nice bassy sound that you need to change pads on, I recommend the Superlux 669. Wonder how many have tried it. Cheaper than M40x for sure.

So many people say how good the Superlux stuff is for the price, I'm gonna have to pick up a few of them

It's just bloody uncomfortable, clamps strongly, even with the pads I chose (Misodiko), but at least it's got reasonable isolation, and the sound is worth it.

why people that produce video about pro-audio equipment have the most problems with having good mic quality uff... this little bee in the backgroundsound makes me so nervous xD

I can agree on the general characteristics of the sound.... Just tested briefly M40x and M50x when I bought my M50x. The M40 sounded more avarage pair and less detailed. On the other hand the details I could hear on M50x just blew my mind. My first decent headphones ever. Before judging me to go on hype I did test few others including DT770... :D Also wanted good isolation from the world surrounding me which these cans do provide. I am also a bit allergic to "soundstage" since it feels to me that music gets colored and less punchy/detailed. I hope I got my terms correct :D
