6:04 Apart from the excellent airy, spacious sound they give, I've found the open backed DTs to be far less fatiguing than fully closed headphones, and the velour covered pads make them even more comfortable. This is a major plus in long sessions.

DTs impedence is to high 250 ohms. You will not hear any noise, if there is any. I am happy with Audio Technica. I have 4 of them: 2x M50xBT (for playback), 1x M50x (for post production), 1x M70x (for field production - noise catcher).
@enlistenmusic17192 жыл бұрын
The DT990 has a huge treble peak lmao, what? They’re literally one of the most fatiguing headphones you can use. I have the dt770, which have less treble then the DT990, and they’re extremely fatiguing without EQ. They’re not a good headphones for mixing because they aren’t flat at all. You need actually flat headphones for mixing, like the DT880, or the sennheiser HD600, 6XX, or HD560s. The DT770 especially is not good for mixing at all. They’re designed for monitoring. They’re completely coloured in sound signature, have way to much bass, and way to much treble. If you mix on them, your mix will probably end up sounding very mid forward.

I agree with ALMOST everything said in this review. My one nitpick is that the DT770's and DT990's do not sound the same in my opinion. I use both extensively and the DT990's are undoubtedly brighter and glassier than the 770's. And that's important because the 770's are already on the slightly brighter side of the spectrum, so the 990's are more fatiguing after a long session. I have to admit, I definitely reach for the 770's more often (which are actually slightly more comfortable as well in my opinion).

I purchased the DT990 250 ohms version used it with Focusrite 8i6 and they sounded terrible. I mean as soon as you turn the music up the sound gets distorted. Have you experienced the same thing? At first it seemed like the music with slightly louder bass was sounding distorted but later anything that is higher slightly in the middle started sounding distorted and I returned the headphones. I searched on the internet if anyone else had the same issue and turns out a few people have made a complaint of the same issue. Have you ever experienced anything like that with your DT990?

I've had the Cb1's for about 3 years using them daily. lol i'm actually using them right now. They are great for the price!! I loaned them to a friend who had the M40x and he was blown away by the sound quality. Very comfortable too. Unfortunately the build quality is not that great. The "leather' from the ear cups has stripped completely and I had to use my sewing skills to patch them up because they totally fell off. The hinges on each ear broke and they are both being held together with super glue. Still sounds great after 3 years though. If you want something comfortable, with great sound then the Cb1 is a good buy, but if you are looking for durability.. get something else. P.s. Don't get the OneOdio if you care anything about sound quality. You will regret it. A friend of mine bought a pair and it sounds terrible. Save a little and get something better

I bought the Neumann NDH20s last year (2019) in April and am absolutely glad I did! These closed back headphones have some of the best sound I have ever had with some headphones and I use them for just about everything except gaming. The church where I work sound and media systems has a separate room where work. We get some "visitors" who will occasionally get loud and bring up children who cried on occasion. I had the Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones and they DID NOT block out that sound very well. After getting my Neumann NDH20s I was really surprised at what I had been missing from the sound, and because they are so good, I occasionally had to take some forks to my ears due to the "out-of-tune-ness" of the singing for the music. Yeah, they did that. My bottom line for them is if your budget allows it, get the Neumann NDH20s because they are worth it. I did and I'm glad I did. Thanks for sharing Sanjay! I can sort of relate, having m50x myself. My previous headphones were HyperX Cloud 2, and coming from them the m50x at first were noticably less comfortable, especially for longer periods of time. But after about a month or so, I got perfectly used to M50x, and I can wear them for many hours barely noticing any uncomfortableness (idk if that's a word even) ... so I guess you just kinda get used to over time.

With Sonarworks they are love in the low range so clean and defined. 60-70%of my mix down prep comes with the ATH M50s and studio monitors the final third comes with the AKG 702s due to their wide soundstage. Sounds are more smooshed in the M50s . All finishing is done using my studio monitors. Remember to always check the mix in mono throughout the process.

Is there a big difference mixing with the sonys compared to the beats? I have the Sony's 900N bluetooth headphones which are not monitor headphones(I got them just for listening) but I was wondering if I connect them with wire to my audio interface if they would be as good as monitor headphones

Omg I had to get rid of my Beats... Terrible. After a little trip to guitar center and the tech was cool enough to allow me to listen to my mixes of a couple of track I mixed with Beats headphones The mixes were lacking terribly all beats headphones have a color more suited to consumer sound to them not flat. Love my Samson Sr 950s

Solid review. Accurate based on my own experience, as well. I prefer the Sony to the Beyers (easier to drive and more neutral, but less bass and less fun to listen to for casual listening).

The ath-m50x are amazing for mixing and creation when you can't use monitors. Translates very well when I do jump on my speakers. The soundstage isn't all that wide but it handles everything else quite nice. Was a major recent upgrade (last year) from my 7506's I used for over a decade. Beyers were too bright for my tastes. I also find the Senns HD-25s are great secondary phones. I watch movies, tv and game with Phillips x2hr. Great vid. Focals?

After listening to several headphones i can confirm the following. I have been daily driver m50x' for over a year now, love the sound, but i replaced the earcuffs to velvet ones. Even these are still lightly uncomfortable, so i have ordered a pair of cuffs with coolinggel in it for more comfort. I have tried the Sennheiser hd 650's but i personally think the stereo image is disgusting (way too wide). The openback beyerdynamics 880 pro's are really neat, sound is overall pretty level, but they aren't the most fun to listen to. In the end i have decided my favourite sound is at the Ollo Audio HPS S4R are my favourite headphones in sound and clarity.

Do I need an amp for dt 770 pro 250 or will the headphone jack on focusrite scarlett solo audio interface be sufficient?
@SanjayC4 жыл бұрын
I find that the scarlett powers the 250 ohm headphones adequately for me. Give it a try. It may be good enough for you too. But I did like using an amp with all these headphones. Just sounded better for all. I used this one: amzn.to/2GQV6kM

I got the M50xBT a while ago and couldn't wear them for more than an hour without my ears really hurting. I got new Wicked ear pads for them and that solved the problem! I'm not an audio expert and I don't have a good ear for it but I didn't hear any noticeable difference in the sound, however the Audio Technicas are base heavy and the thicker ear pads absorb some of that base. So in theory they should have a more flat curve. I wouldn't recommend them though. When doing my research I jumped the gun on buying them. If you have them, they are great headphones. Consistently in the top 10 but generally always around number 10, good enough to make the list or be mentioned which is an honor of it's self but not the best in the price bracket. Enjoy them if you have them, they are great, but if you don't, I'd look at another pair

Haha, looove your reviews Sanjay as well as all videos like this one. To those who complain, hey, we're getting all this for free. Now, I watched and decided on the Sony MDRs, then I went and bought the pair of Status CB-1. Not because they should be much better but because of the price, and it's actually going to be a present. So when I get them, I'll evaluate and probably order a pair of Sony's and another pair of CB-1. I'm not working on a professional level of mixing or mastering so I want to buy two relativelly cheaper pairs of headphones to be able to compare and reference to each other. I've also got an old pair of AKG К240 ”Моnitor” model with 600 ohms, those need a headphone amp that is coloring kind of too much. And I need headphones that are closed, due to the small space and I can't be disturbing people around me too much. Keep up the good work Sanjay!

Listened AKG K702 and Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO in my local store, wanted to pick one of these for monitoring and mixing jazz tracks. 990's have a better and more interesting sound for casual listening, bass is juicy and punchy and emphasized highs adds some extra details. AKG tends to be absolutely flat with mind-blowing wide scene. By heart, I've really liked 990's signature more, but my brain told me to buy k702 due to it's flat response. If you're mixing some genres that had to be punchy and aggresive with low frequencies it's not that bad if you'll oversaturate them with it. But in jazz it's highly critical, so mind decided to pick AKG's. Overall, it depends on your situation and your taste, you probably won't be unsatisfied with both of these!

Sanjay, this video is very useful, because retailers are no longer able to demonstrate 'personal' items like headphones in the pandemic. I've researched a lot and thanks to you for the deciding recommendation, I've bought the Beyerdynamic DT990 pro. I don't need closed phones for tracking so the extra spaciousness of open phones suits me. Your opinion of the DT 990 backs upp everything I've read about them. I used to have a pair of DT440s in the 1970s, they were wonderful, I'm sure the 990s will be too. Thanks for the objective opinions of all of these phones.

@@SanjayC :) A question, I'm thinking of investing in some DT 770 PRO 250 ohm. However, I'll probably need an amp/AI right to power them, right? What would you recommend? (I have budget on $150 amp/ai). Will an amp/ai be able to power within that price range? Or should I go for the 80 ohms? :))

I love my Sony MDR-7506 with Wicked Cushions earpads. The replacement pads make a huge difference and they sound better than the factory pads and are more comfortable. My other favorite pair is the Audio Technica ATH-M40. Similar to the 50s but more balanced and less bass heavy. Also $50 cheaper!
@luissinsin4 жыл бұрын
Great review. I was looking forward to seeing the frequency response graphs. :( Also, I believe the ATH-M40x might have a little less bass than the M50x so perhaps that's a cheaper option that is more neutral and a better recommendation for people. I'm looking at headphones with the most isolation as possible while still sounding good. I already have the HD280s and the ATH-M50, if you ever find something with more isolation than the HD280s that sound great please let me know.

Video is pretty old, but this deserves saying. Higher impedance requires a higher voltage to get the same current (amps) to the drivers compared to lower impedance. The power (Volts x Amps) remains the same. The amount of power required to produce a certain loudness depends on the sensitivity of the headphones, measured in dB/V. You can have high impedance and high sensitivity which don't require much power at all to drive, whereas you can have low impedance but stiff drivers, which have lower sensitivity, which actually does require more power (higher voltage AND more current) to drive.
