Audio-Technica LP-120 Phono Bypass Mod

I wanted to know if there really is anything to the phono mod on the LP-120. So I took a good long look at exactly what happens to the phono audio before and after the mod.
Wow that was a much longer video than I had planned to make. But hopefully being thorough in my explination of the turntable will help make it clear why there is a problem and what exactly changes when you fix it. It would have been easy to avoid this problem if the switch had instead was used to control the input for connect the phono out to the DRV602 or the RCA out instead of switching the output. If you don't care about the lack of differential stereo output, it might be possible to modify the PCB to work that way instead.
The final results of the comparison amount to:
Stock phono out: Reduces volume above 3kHz
Line out: Mostly fine, may have slight reduction in mid tones
USB: Must be set to line or else has all the flaws of phono
Modded phono: Perfect, because that's how it works.

FYI: only a felt platter mat is a "slipmat", because it is designed to slip on the platter to allow DJs to cue up records. The rubber platter mat you have grips the platter rather than slips on it, so it is not a slipmat.

There are 1500ft of grooves on each _side_ of a record. Not per-record, oops.

I have done the exact same mod on my LP120, however.. ..I bought high quality proper RCA sockets with lags at the back so, I could solder directly the internal cable on to them and thus, eliminate another unnecessary connection in the signal path and... ..just a suggestion for anyone that will try doing this, please take the platter off before you turn the table upside down on its lid. If you don't there's a real possibility it may come of the main bearing and fall on the acrylic screen damaging it. Paranoid?.. better safe than sorry! Great video! A couple of years ago, the channel Vinyl TV did the bypass and he was able to use his own personal recording to show the differences in the high range frequency. It's very noticeable. In the end, I think it's best to bypass the preamp altogether and just use an external amp. As for the platter, it probably has the belt rim on it because it's used on a different model. Just a cost saving measure. I used to have the Shure M97xE and it's a great cartridge and excellent for archiving. After having it for a few years, I was able to tell when the stylist was going out. I now use the Ortofon 2M Red cartridge but I do miss the brush on the M97xE.

I removed the 4 parts Craig pointed out, that means I still have USB without degraded treble, but I still get buzz, ground wire hasn't fixed it (only works on mains grounded power amps) Hopefully a thicker audio lead might help, if it doesn't I might have to remove the USB to reduce signal path and it is too close for comfort in regard to the fig8 mains jack

Yes, I realize that the video was made long before LP120X and 140XP were introduced, but if you want clean signal just go for one of the two newer models. I recommend 140XP, as it doesn't have preamp or USB like the 120X does. That being said, the newer model no longer have these issues, so if you're on budget, go for 120X.

To answer your question @ 19:00 in the video. Those ancillary components around the op-amp are there because phono pre-amps need to apply the RIAA curve to the signal before it can be amplified to line level. Without that RIAA curve applied. You will get very loud treble and next to no bass.

@14:00 The reason why there's holes in the platter for changing the belt is because the LP-120 is actually made by a Taiwanese OEM named Hanpin, and they make a variation of it which uses a belt drive mech as opposed to direct drive.

Separated phono grounds doesn't make any sense because at the amp they are tied together. You can test this with a RCA cable connected to the amp and use a multimeter between left and right ground. Shielding is not a ground and should not tied to ground. The shielding inside the turntable (at the output of the tone arm) acts like a faraday cage (take a look at the waving of shield) to block interference from the outside. It is okay to connect shielding to shielding however never connect it to ground.

Cool! Thorough, informative and pretty deep.. I like it.. And supported by really doing the comparisons the proper way! The non modified version of the line out was surprisingly close to the modified one.. And Hanpin also makes belt drive turntables, so being able to reuse the platter saves money 😀 I am still curious what that thing sounds like. I use a vintage turntable (rebuilt Thorens TD-124) which is basically all mechanical and electrical. No pitch control, no voltage regulation regarding speed, just very nice build quality and a great strobe.. But does it really sound better? And, more to the point, measure better? I wonder..

I think most of the supporting components surrounding the TI chip are there for RIAA equalization, which is kind of mandatory if you want a pleasant response curve from commercially recorded records. Your Pioneer receiver should have a similar equalization circuit internally. The quality/design of this circuit is one of many reasons why one phono stage sounds different from the rest.

If you're after a clear vinyl mat you can cut obtain some transparent vinyl table cover sheet. You can probably obtain these in shops that sell kitchen utensils, housewares etc. The sheets come in various thicknesses so choose what you think will suit you best. You'll need to cut a few disks out of it and stack them on top of one another. Word to the wise: vinyl sheets tend to stick together very well and the the layered mat produced this way will actually be quite hard. I do not advise using this on top of any felt mat due to the dissimilar sound propagation and rigidity properties of the two materials.

I’m using an acrylic mat on top of a thick rubber mat on this turntable, and I compared the results of both the rubber and acrylic. Surprisingly, the bass response is considerably better on the acrylic. Just thought I’d share.

If your AT-LP120 is a slightly older one, you may want to order the replacement antiskating spring as well, unless that's already been done. The original stock one was found to be too weak, to the point where there effectively wasn't much of any antiskating going on at all. This was only fixed in production units quite recently. Some people are not exactly fond of the tonearm bearings on this and other Hanpin OEM 'tables either (too much slack and friction), but it is what it is.

That is a beautiful pioneer! I use an SX750 which is much the same but an earlier model it seems. Mine lacks the power meters, and my tape monitor selection is a single 3 position switch. Your connectors on the back are also virticle, mine sit on a ledge which makes them all face upwards. And that has always been a weak point of mine... But the sound... OMG the sound is great! Plenty of power too! I think they are rated 50 watts per channel.

What's the brand and name of the soft vinyl mat you're using? I may want to try it out. I had the exact static-sticking-the-record-to-the-mat problem you're describing, only with a (very well reviewed) rubber mat I'd tried. I've had better luck with the felt mat that came with my turntable, but it's still problematic. Battling static is the primary thing that keeps me streaming FLAC instead of playing vinyl records, unless I have a ton of free time to try to de-static everything. I seldom have the time anymore.

Thanks so much for the informative video, I just did the same process to my lp120 but i'm having trouble getting a signal out of the left channel. I wired everything according to your video and removed the jumper smd. the strange thing is when i unplug the right channel rca slightly(the sleeve is no longer making contact) i'll get a signal through the left speaker. i'm guessing its a grounding issue but i can't seem to figure out whats happening. thanks again!

The ground wire you added. What did you connect that to inside? (or from I guess) to hook to the receiver. I got a pair of 80's Sharps, an RP-113 and RP-119 and neither one has it. My TT seems to randomly turn preamp off/on when signal is close to none, e.g. it sometimes cuts off in between LP tracks. Also evident when motor is stopped, I drop stylus on a disk and listen - some very faint static and then off/on. First noticed it when was recording to tape while monitoring with headphones. Anti skate somewhat works thou, with same cart - Shure 97x set with VTF to 1.25 I found anti skate needs to be around 4.25. Will have to open it up and delete preamp. Thinking of getting Shiit Mani now...

Interesting video. One little issue with the comparison is that the left and right channel were swapped on the first line and phono recording compared to the USB and later phono recording. Direct comparison therefore isn't really possible from the video because the sound changes when left and right gets swapped between the samples.

To hear the Cymbals at 28:28, I used apple earbuds plugged into my laptop, changed settings to 1080. Minor sound, but definitely there. Difference not that dramatic, but noteworthy.. . Probably wouldn't have noticed unless pointed out. Using only Acer's monitor speakers, I could not tell.

Man I`ll tell you.The ground is the same troughout youre hole sistem.It`s continuity between all your rca grounds behind the amplifier.Even the ground cable for phono(behind the amplifier) is connected.Separating the rca grounds is useless because in the amplifier they will be connected to a single point.Another thing is the self grounding of a turntable.you can easily connect the ground of the cartridge to the spring inside the lp120 by internal wire.The sound is not affected and there will be a cable less. That's a good question, I hadn't considered it. I'm going to guess the chassis ends up with a slight 60Hz buzz and the long parallel metal of the tone arm can affect it via induction. Grounding the turntable to the receiver matches the grounds so the buzz is the same on both and then not going to be amplified.

I have done about 20 of these TT cause the Owners did not or could not do It themselves. Put down a Clean or New thick towel on the work surface before tipping It over. Even the smallest specs of dust will destroy the Lid. Do not take the Original wire out or DE-Solder as shown here. Roll It up Into a coil and tape It up, Then lay It flat In the Empty space back of the tonearm and tape It down. Do not unscrew the Pre-Amp again as shown here leave It In. Now follow the procedure that Is shown here. Now there are 8 Little Brass spacers that will fall off from the top of the Screw holders. Collect these and make sure You have ALL of them. After You have done the MODS Shown Here. Put the Base Plate back on, And before You put the screws In, Drop the Brass Spacers Into the holes first. Then put In the Screw In and carefully make sure that I has gone through the Spacer. Now tighten down flip over and Enjoy the Music. PS I have also done the Anti-Skate but that Is another story.

This is an underrated comment! I didn't know about the spacers at first and only realized there was a problem when I had screwed the whole thing together and heard them bouncing around inside. So far I've found 7 of the 8...that last one's going to be the death of me.

Most turntables come with attached RCA phono out leads, as phono cartridges are designed to have a certain 'cable' load (mainly capacitance). Using a fixed lead means this should not really change, whereas if they used RCA sockets, then any cable could be used, changing the loading. Doing as you have means you have the stock cable along with your added cable meaning (in theory) high end loss, the very point of your mod project.... The preamp IC on your turntables board has a lot of extra components, as you found, above and beyond what is in the IC's data sheet, these will be for the RIAA equalization curve. Phono pre-amps are NOT a flat response beast, hence extra components. I'd be more inclined to have the stock RCA lead hanging out for normal direct cartridge output, BUT connect those new RCA sockets you fitted to the internal preamp board. This way should you want to use the preamp/line-out/USB socket, then you just plug the phono RCA lead into the new sockets to feed it back to the internal preamp circuit board.

In that grey area in youtube there is also not very known old music. Most ones i've found that aren't flagged, are pre-1930's ones, usually more "indie" ones Also old tracker music and 'modplugs' seem to be pretty much safe too apparently, unless if used in very known games such as team17 games. The most safe ones are probably the tracker ones. It only took 3 years from shazam (an app) and youtube to actually recognize some old music from a tv show i was looking for (Lover's Serenade · Alan Moorhouse to be precise). So some other old music may endup in a database due to some movie using it or somehow it being bought by some company like umg.

I guess there is an LPF on the phono out of the turntable or some weird impedance shit happening, that high end roll off is really audible even with crappy headphones, and also the bass on the modded phono out and on the line out is tighter. I thought that the song used wasn't gonna be good to compare, but even on a sound source so lacking of high end there is a difference, I imagine on a song with really defined high end how the original phono out can affect.

I own a newer Audio Technica AT-LP5 deck and if I turn the mains power off I still get phono output (I hear audio by physically turning the turntable) so it would appear Audio Technica have isolated the phono and line level on their newer decks. Is that correct?

On the LP-120 the stock phono out is directly connected to the output through the switch, but it isn't isolated. So you can move the platter when it's off to get sound, but it's still being affected by the circuit. Looking at this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4jTaI16oZKcesU Yours is a different pre-amp board, and I can see they've added a ground connector. But it looks like it's using all the same components. It may just be a new layout of the same schematic with different connectors. Without being able to see both sides it's hard to say. The easiest test would probably be to listen for the dip in volume if you turn it off while it is playing over phono. Or record something over USB and compare the spectrograms between phono and line to see if there is less noise and a high frequency reduction.

@@TechTangents I would use a short cable to connect the RCA jacks to tonearm wires, that cheap 3 ft cord will add too much capacitance to the final load since another yard of cable is connected, you should have gone to electronics hobby shop instead of hardware store that don't carry solderable RCA jacks

I've been using mine with the internal turntable Preamp and it sounds great. Also, if yo do this mod you'll loose the USB output and need an external ADC if you want to digitize a record

at 16:30 you point out the jumpers that connect the signal from the cartridge to the phone preamp. Couldn't one just remove those jumpers? Also, you mentioned the power connector. I am wondering if the signal degradation would be minimized if the power to the phono pre was disconnected? I wouldn't think so. I believe the problem is that the cartridge is being loaded with the internal phono pre and the external phono pre at the same time. That is not a good thing.

Well done video. I have a newer LP120 and the guts are slightly different now. I'm curious if the coloration still exists. I opened mine intending to mod, noticed it was different, and closed it back up for a later day. Also, the newer ones no longer have hardwired cables.

What was attached at 23:45? I did this mod and I'm getting humming with my Cambridge 551p preamp. For the ground, I just attached spades to the springy thing where other ground spades were attached. Thinking whether I should attach a thick ground cable directly to the braided ground.

Did that work? I also did this mod on a PL-120 (non usb) and am getting a hum when the volume is cranked. Is that normal? Music sounds great but knowing that hum is there is killing me

@@unpluggedlamp thicker ground cables didn't solve it, but I think it helped a bit. I ended up trying to re-wire things, then went overboard and tried to rewire the whole tonearm... broke it in the process. Now I'm waiting for a replacement. 😅

I can't legally distribute full recordings of the music I used so I'm afraid I can't do that. Using it for demonstration purposes falls under fair use, that's the only reason I used "real" music at all.

Hi there! I did this mod, exactly the way you did it, and I am getting a bad hum, I'm assuming from not a good ground connection? When the ground is not connected, the hum is much much worse than when it is. But it is still present. Is there anyway to getting around this?

Update... I remembered something that I did when I was inside the record player, and a little light bulb went off in my brain. I removed the ground wire that takes the shielding ground to the spring. Opened it up, soldered it back, and no more buzz.

Thank you so much. I own a LP120 for 5 years now and I used to connect it on a pretty cheap receiver with phono input. After buying a hifi amplifier last week I was kind of dissapointed because every mp3 file sounded better than my records. So I hoped to find something to upgrade the LP120 and found your video. I swear I never even touched a soldering iron in my entire life before. After watching your video I went to the DIY store, bought an soldering iron and did it. Totally worth it! I've either destroyed my hearing with years of listening to my music very loud with earphones or my PC speakers aren't super great but I gotta be honest, I couldn't tell the difference between any of the comparisons.

It's pretty hard to convey through audio on KZbin, because it gets processed yet again when you upload it...and then what you get is affected by the speed of your internet connection, etc. That's why the spectrograms were so important.

There are 4 parts that are responsible for the roll off, they are on the PCB very close to the patch cord out, vinyl tv documents this- 2 inductors and 2 caps, I have removed them, replaced ind's with SMD jumper blocks, I then separated TT ground and tonearm ground with a 0.05uF cap and fix ground wire to tonearm shield The component no_ are L616 &L617 and C632 and C631 for the parts to be removed

Since moving to the Pyle power amp W/O mains ground, I'll have ditch the cap for 1M resistor, change the internal ground layout or fully remove the USB board, also going to put in thick car audio lead for the RCA lead to get the buzz down

The 2 wire power lead is best changed out for a 3 wire lead with mains earth to get the buzz right down, I went back to the fully earthed Dynavox CS-PA1 amp for now until I can get a new 3 core mains cord for the Pyle, the Dynavox is only 6w RMS/c where the Pyle is 20w RMS

I just didn't get it. Line output and phono output are suppose to have different frequency response. You are using line output when you want to use different phono corrector. Are you comparing dry signal from record with different phono amps output? They are suppose to be different, that's the main idea - manufacturer of record equalized it to preserve the best noise-signal ratio all over the spectrum, so you need to equalize it back to get the signal close to original. Every phono amp will make equalization differently.
