Another great video Bruce. Re your comments at the end, I'm sure most of us are just pleased you take the time to make these videos *at all*. I don't see that you should feel guilty or pressured just to churn one out if, as you say, your head isn't in the right place. These are unprecedented times and there's no 'right way' to feel.

You've covered so much of darktable now, there simply isn't much need to churn out a ton of content. The occasional video of something you haven't done before, or periodic version updates are really all that's necessary. I know that's all I look for at this point. Thank you for all the work you've done to date. This is the best darktable content I know of.

Bruce, whilst photography and darktable may seem frivolous or even pointless while the world is in turmoil, the videos that you and others have created over the years are providing a huge resource to people who maybe have a lot more time on their hands , and you are helping them keep sane, so in your own way, you're helping some of us get through this.

Hi from Perth WA Bruce. I get notifications on new videos from many of the channels that I am subscribed to, but yours is the only one where I watch the new video within 24hrs. I love your clear and detailed explanations to what can sometimes be very technical areas. When I started watching your videos I was a little scared of dt, but now feel quite at home with many areas of this amazing program, thanks to you. I can well relate to the burn out comments. I have taken an early retirement option in response to COVID-19 after 35yrs in the IT industry and it's taken me a couple of weeks to start to do even a few of the things I promised myself that I would do in retirement. Look after yourself and your family first, you have already more than fulfilled any self perceived obligations to your audience.

Thank you again! As I'm writing this, it's been 5 weeks since I put out a video, because I've just lost my mojo. I'm hoping it returns soon, as I want to continue the series. I think a combination of dealing with the pandemic, a rough patch I went through at work (which lasted about 3 weeks!), trashing my computer and having to restore both windoze and Linux from backups (another 10 day distraction, while I was going through the aforementioned shit at work) all sucked me dry. 😩

Thanks for another great video! Another feature of 3.0.1 and 3.0.2 is that they support more camera models. I recently inherited Lumix GH4 and GH5 bodies and lens. While dt supported the older GH4, there was nothing for the GH5. Starting in 3.0.1 the GH5 is now supported and I can use the lens correction module. Wow, that is a great module and it now supports all my equipment. Three ideas for future videos: - how and when to use the blend modes - how to backup and copy ALL the dt settings to a new computer, ie backup/restore the database, collections, favorite modules, tags, presets, etc. I tried copying the raw/xmp to another PC and then importing a new collection but the edits didn't migrate. - how to correct an area where all the data is blown (picker shows 255,255,255), I've seen videos on color reconstruction / highlight reconstruction, but they don't work for me. Thanks again and we all appreciate everything you do for the community. Keep up the great work!!
@audio2u4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Richard! As for the blend modes, I'd love to do a video on that, and did actually plan to do it 12 months ago. But when I sat down to research it, I realised if need a PhD in advanced mathematics to bother understand it, and then to explain it to someone else! 😃 The "how to move to a new machine" is a good one though. I'll put that on the list.
@richardinmontreal3964 жыл бұрын
@@audio2u I tried to copy a folder on my desktop (raw and xmp files) to my laptop and then import that new folder into a new collection on my laptop, but the edits didn't move over. It might be the SQL database but I will have to investigate more. It would be great to sync the other user settings (presets, favorite modules, tags, etc.) to multiple computers. Another idea for future videos might be the colour reconstruction and highlight reconstruction modules. I have a photos with a small area of the sky clipped (ie all that area shows colours 255,255,255) and I'd really like to copy adjacent sky to that area. I'd used the colorize module but the results are ok, I know it can be better. I can send you the image if you'd like to see what I mean.

I have been running an older version of Darktable on Ubuntu 19.04. When I 20.04 was released I updated my machine to this most recent version of Ubuntu, and thus the most recent version of Darktable. I am finding that since updating, sliders all tend to be very choppy which really makes 3.0.x a bit a frustrating to use. In previous versions the slider movement was very fluid, even though it may take a moment for the changes to be made on the photograph. Now it seems that the slider doesn’t move to where it I tell it to go until after the changes are made on the photograph which gives it a very choppy/laggy feel. Any suggestions? Perhaps it is just time for a new machine. Although I would hope for performance improvements with a new update.

Didn't expect the talk at the end after the update news coverage. I have not really something to add, just want to say that I agree with everything you said. Great talk and I fully understand you, don't pressure yourself. You said yourself that you might burned out or are about to and I think nobody, including me, wants that. Or maybe I have something to add. About the Focus Peaking feature, the rectangles is an older version of the feature called focus detection rectangles. I think the new peaking feature is replacing it, but they keep the old version too, not sure why. I found this www.darktable.org/2013/11/determining-focus-in-lighttable/

Is there any performance enhancement in the 3.0.2 version? Like the lag in denoise modules it really slows down. That's the only drawback comparing to lightroom. It's now my main raw developer but the lags still irritate me sometimes as with Photoshop and lightroom these lags are not there.
