Oh well, youtubers that jump from here to there or need to talk about so much other things before they get to the topic...... I know what you talking about. But I don't know why you're worried that your videos are of that kind. Your videos are top notch. Very informative,great audio and video quality and professional presented by someone who dig deep into the software and is in no way arrogant. You come across like a person I would like to drink a beer with and talk about software, images, music, the world, whatever. :) Happy New Year!

A few episodes ago, you had made an aside comment that you didn't rename photos. This was an aha moment for me as I always have embedded tags in my filenames. The darktable tagging system is much faster than renaming photos and accomplishes much more! It makes renaming photos redundant, so i won't do that any more. Thanks for simplifying my workflow,
@audio2u4 жыл бұрын
No worries, Bill! I try not to advise anyone to follow a particular schema, because workflow is so personal. I share what I do, but leave it up to the end user to take on board what works and discard the rest. But yeah, tagging is much easier than renaming photos!

@12:50 You explain the arrowhead on the gradient mask feature where you say it is pointing to the part of the image which will be affected by the mask. It is just the other side of it, as you also explained in an earlier video where you darkened the sky on a picture taking in Sri Lanka. This just shows the devs did it wrong, the arrowhead should be at the side of the mask where it is all happening.

Hi Bruce! Love your Darktable videos. Darktable is not very easy to learn and your tutorials have been a huge help. Wanted to let you know about resizing the fonts. In the older versions, the default fonts size was WAY too small. Now, with the redesigned 3.0, the fonts are too BIG. Ha! Changing the font size is easy by editing the .css file. In 3.0, do this: 1. go to the .css file location: C:\Program Files\darktable\share\darktable\themes (for windows 10 - your linux will be different?) 2. make a copy of the .css file so you have a copy of the original file. 3. open the file darktable.css in notepad++ 4. go to line 160 or search for 'font-size' 5. change the line ' font-size: 1em; ' to a size you like. I changed mine to .85 em (a bit smaller) 6. save file Now all the text is resized. In the darkroom tab, .85 gives me 5 more modules showing on the screen without scrolling. Enjoy - and thanks again!

(Note: darktable.css is the default theme. If you are using a different theme, edit the file for that theme ie. darktable-elegant-dark.css)

Thanks for the info! I might just make a short video on this as I've seen a couple of people commenting on the font sizes.

@@audio2u Useful tip from Drone 360 there, tx :) Just changed font size in Linux Mint : File System \ usr \ share \ darktable \ themes \ darktable.css (line 160). From what I can see the other CSS files in the themes folder are used as a subset to the main CSS file. i,e. the font-size change in darktable.css remains active even if you select another theme via the DT GUI. (In Linux anyway, not sure about Windows or OSX).
@nicolasauffray87375 жыл бұрын
@@mickr007 & @Drone 360 Productions: Just be careful. Modifying default themes is not the best way. You will lost your changes on next darktable update as these files will be overwritten. Best way is to create a themes folder on .config/darktable personal folder, then create a css file (for example personaltheme.css ; you name it as you want) then add this line : @import '/usr/share/darktable/darktable.css' (or any other theme file you want to edit) then you copy on this created file only the part you want to change from the imported theme, then you modify this copied part.

@@nicolasauffray8737 Hi Nicolas, thanks for pointing us in the right direction there. It didn't work for me first time but got me thinking back about CSS. It's working great now :) I'm using Linux Mint Cinnamon, so file path may differ on other operating systems? Two things to add to your comment: 1. The @import line on the new theme CSS file needs to be suffixed with a semi-colon and the file path needs to include the default themes folder ie: @import '/usr/share/darktable/themes/darktable.css'; 2. To activate the personal theme the user then goes into Global Preferences via the DT GUI and selects their new theme via the theme dropdown menu. (Took me a while to find this but in the end realised it would be the only way DT could be pointed at a user created CSS file). Anyway, thanks again and I'll take this opportunity to say I'm really enjoying darktable and appreciate all the effort that goes into creating it.

You could checkout release-3.0.0. Just to make sure there isn't anything that breaks your installation. If you checked out with git do this: # Make sure you have your tags synced git pull origin master --tags # Checkout release-3.0.0 git checkout release-3.0.0 # Get a list of all available tags git tag Then just compile as you did.

OK, I'm new to all this github stuff, so bear with me here. I've created a temp directory to download files to (lets say /Downloads/dt3-stable). Using the terminal, I change to that directory, and then type git clone git://github.com/darktable-org/darktable.git This downloads all the assets, but retrieves the latest (dev) version. If I type git checkout release-3.0.0, it tells me.... -------------------------------------------------------------- "Note: checking out 'release-3.0.0'. You are in 'detached HEAD' state. You can look around, make experimental changes and commit them, and you can discard any commits you make in this state without impacting any branches by performing another checkout. If you want to create a new branch to retain commits you create, you may do so (now or later) by using -b with the checkout command again. Example: $ git checkout -b HEAD is now at 0be50cc89 Update AUTHORS. -------------------------------------------------------------- ...but that doesn't actually download the assets for 3.0.0 What am I missing here? How do I get it to retrieve the files for 3.0.0?
@silicoid5 жыл бұрын
@@audio2u You did everything right. See git a bit like a VHS (am I showing my age?). With your original "git clone" you downloaded the whole VHS tape. With "git pull" you just update your local copy of the VHS tape. The copy is always spooled to the latest changes/the end. With "git checkout release-3.0.0" you did a rewind to that tag. You already have everything local, it just does an undo of changes between the latest state and release 3.0.0. You have to be careful with the latest as it can have unstable patches in them. You can check what is currently checked out with: $ git branch * (HEAD detached at release-3.0.0) master

Hi Bruce Happy New Year and thanks for this wonderful series. I have learned so much and look forward to the new version. I have a question regarding the upgrade to the new version - Will I loose my existing tagging when I up grade?
@audio2u5 жыл бұрын
No, the only thing you will "lose"is the ability to work in any version of darktable prior to v3. The database file has been upgraded for this version and is not backwards compatible. But honestly, I very much doubt that you will want to go back. But if it worries you, take a backup of you database file and store it somewhere safe. All your tags, metadata, star ratings and color labels will migrate without issue.

Are you suggesting another type of video, Graeme? If so, care to elaborate on what you had in mind?
@graemeherrington66735 жыл бұрын
Not really another type, Bruce, but you mentioned that you had compiled it to Mint yourself, and apologised if others were a little behind that curve. Why not just do a quick vid to show how to get to where you are, by showing that process as a one off (get the code, run the compile / tests etc.). I'm on Mint myself, and I would guess that a lot of those following you are on Deb / Ubuntu / Mint. TO be honest, I probably don't need the leg-up myself, but I think it would be useful for a lot of people. OK, Mac and Doze users get to fend for themselves at this point.....

@@audio2u Hi Bruce, great tutorials and I'm finding them very helpful. Re Graeme's comment about installing/upgrading to DT 3.0 - I used the unofficial PPA mentioned here: bit.ly/2SCl5DO to upgrade from 2.6 on LM 19.3. (I deleted the PPA once the upgrade was complete). I found the link via itsfoss ( itsfoss.com/darktable-3-release/ ) and have been playing with DT for a few days now without any issues. Anyway hope helpful for anyone using Ubuntu based distros. Looking forward to your take on the new Filmic module - I'm trying it with auto apply Basecurve turned off but the jury still out on whether it's the right way to go. Thanks again for the videos - brilliant resource for helping get to grips with DT :)

Good catch Bruce, you just present here what I have written at the end of the article you use for first video : "darktable 3.0 also brings many bug fixes and some other minor improvements probably forgotten here due to this new version so rich in new features." Of course, "minor improvements" is quite subjective but darktable 3.0 is so rich that yes, it was quite inevitable to not mention all things. Your two videos are quite a good ones. I, now, quite want to add links to your two videos on the article in darktable blog, with your authorization of course ! (Nilvus)
