Great video, got me to buy the speakers and even years later they still match your review. I was worried about what size and quality level would fit my home office and these have been perfect. Not too much bass and loud enough to fill my office without annoying the neighbors. That white noise he mentions @12:00 still exists for me but it completly goes away when the speakers are connected to my source. Even with nothing being played as long as my DAC was powered and connected to the speakers I heard no white noise. When not connected that white noise exists but is only noticeable if the speakers are turned up and playing nothing.
@kaivrock5 жыл бұрын
I just got these. I think they're stunning. Silky smooth sound that doesn't distort even at high levels. Stands, I've found are bass killers. I put mine on two pieces of absorbant foam to dig down to the bass freqs that they put out. I get none of the white noise you're talking about and I have them hooked up to a cheesy HP Pavillion with no DAC. And they are LOUD. A good sound demo for these is Eldorado by ELO.

It has never ceased to amaze me how the quality of the music, the sophistication of music sampling increases with the price point of the speakers. E.g. most of the sub $250 computer speakers predominately use electronic sampling. Bottom line, thanks for the rare, very rare excellent sampling (classical).

DAC. just hearing about that product. i just spent close to 500bucks on an ATX motherboard that is said to have top notch onboard sound. i don't think a DAC would be necessary in my case. I'm having trouble finding satellite PC front speakers that have a Center Channel For Midrange. i'd love, for once in my life, to clearly hear dialog in movies i stream! Any ideas on that? The motherboard actually has, aside from the familiar green 3.5mm output, an output for rear speakers and one for either a sub or for a center channel; i just can't find that Center Channel with a 3.5 input! Thought i'd ask, thanks

+Martin Hoch ha nice, much respect martin. i loved hearing the sound of the bow, or whatever the thing is called going across the strings, you could hear it flexing. but yeh these will sound much more precise than the logitechs and just better overall, but just wont' get quite as low compared to having that dedicated sub obviously
@StygianStyle9 жыл бұрын
techfreshness Right after I posted that, I stumbled on your review of the Vanatoo speakers, and I'm thinking I might get those instead of the Audioengines. After checking out other reviews of the Vanatoos, it seems like they are better. I need to figure out the cheapest way to set up an optical connection (like yours). I'm building a new computer system in the near future, and I have all the components picked out, except for the sound card. I don't know if most motherboards have an optical out port, or if you need a high-end sound card for that (or what...).
@techfreshness9 жыл бұрын
hey martin, glad you came across it. yeah man all new mobos have optical outs for sure these days. you getting z79 chipset i'm assuming? any major mfg is gonna have a solid onboard chip to drive these speakers, you don't need a soundcard at all imo, be pretty redundant, keep it simple and throw the money towards the vanatoos instead.
@StygianStyle9 жыл бұрын
techfreshness the only need for a sound card might be dedicated processing power for sound in next-gen games. It takes a slight burden off of the CPU...I'm undecided.
@techfreshness9 жыл бұрын

Also, you need somekind of audio interface/dac to power them, which would cost me more money. I'm just looking for a good listening experience, plug and play etc
@techfreshness8 жыл бұрын
+Yuddy hey yuddy, i don't believe you need an additional interface for the rp5's, they have rca inputs in the back i believe. if that is the case, i'd go with the krk's they will sound more accurate and clean and are better suited for near field listeing. am assumign you are hooking these up to a computer?

I was never truly impressed with my M-Audio speakers.. I moved to the JBL SR305 (5" drivers) and was blown away. For $200 I don't think they can be beat. I now have the audioengine A5+ wireless and really like them. That said.. the JBL really held their own. Also Balanced inputs are NOT a big deal.. they can be easily adapted to RCA... Some of your terminology was incorrect and your opinion on them being harsh shocks me as they are extremely laid back and you do not have to get them loud to get detail. Mine have almost zero hiss.. the noise floor is very low on them. Some hiss is common across many powered book shelves speakers.

Thank you for your great review, I have a question that may be you can help me with. We live in a 800sqft 1 bedroom apartment and i'm kind of an Audiophile who can only say if what i hear is good or bad:) So far i had the pleasure the have the Bose 901 but since we moved and downsized i'm looking for something to replace. I'd like to spend up to $800 but of course the lower the better :) Also regular amp is out of option since again... no room for it...these units are just to big. Would you recommend thees speakers in my case or please any advice or recommendation. Thank you in advance
@techfreshness9 жыл бұрын
+Alexander Polyakov hey alexander, thanks for the comment. hmm, the bose 901's are pretty large speakers, i'm assuming you are used to some pretty big sound. so you are just looking for a powered set of speakers, and you don't need any external amps to save space (also you will use these primarily for music listening)? i'd say these would work for you, but at your budget i'd recommend adding in their matching subwoofer to round out the low end, amzn.to/1XcoDtq that combo should fill your apartment very well imo.

Great review, I was considering the A5+ for my desk, but now I'm having second thoughts. Do you reckon the A2+, which are smaller in size and have a built in DAC will be more optimal for a bedroom desk computer setup or do you maybe recommend something else entirely. I'd also be interested to see another video after the A5+ have went through their breaking in period, just to see what level of improvement is to be expected.
@techfreshness9 жыл бұрын
+Ivo Sotirov thanks ivo. i wouldn't recommend the a2+ myself. i believe the dac is only a 16/44hz quality, but i'm not sure to be honest. in any event, they are way too small for me, if you were looking at something with 5" drivers (which is really the smallest you would want to go with for full sound range) the a2's are just going to be too wimpy imo, unless space is at a super premium, which doesn't sound like it is in your case. my next purchase i was going to try the presonus E5's which seem like a steal at $250, and they have some solid reviews. if those don't work out maybe try the cheaper mackie cr4's and a martinlogan dynamo 300 sub, both those options will have you under 300 bucks. you may like the a5+'s, i just think its a shame they had the white noise. the adam audio f5's are generally regarded as the best speaker out there in this size and price range, but a little on the higher end of the price spectrum. also note, fwiw, both speakers will need to be plugged in (on the presonus and adams) as they each have their own amp in the speaker (and are bi-amped to boot!). so its a bit of a drawback with the extra wires there. do you already have a sub?
@mrdavester9 жыл бұрын
+techfreshness I use the a2's with a sub, had it for years. I have no real complaints, but i'm thinking of adding the d1. I guess you wouldn't know if the dac volume knob controls the sub volume as the speaker knob does not
@techfreshness9 жыл бұрын
hey dave, i believe it would since its controlling the signal before it hits your a2's and then those output to the sub. but the fact that the regular knob doesn't control the rca outs on the a2's makes me wonder. so yeh, basically i dont' know sorry!
@mrdavester8 жыл бұрын
techfreshness maybe it would work if I went from the d1 to the sub input first, then to the a2's. Not sure if there would be any quality loss going through the sub rca I/o tho.

Bro I'm kinda undecided to whether A5 or A2 is better for me. I'll use it as desktop speakers and I'll buy a sub. I want the A2 because, You have a point that A5's need to be played like 60% of the volume to get the details but it may tend to be harshly loud. But I like to have a warm sounding speaker as well and the A2 might be too little and may just add color on the sound just to compensate its size. What I'm trying to say is, given a chance if u have a subwoofer would it sound good and warm if I buy A2s?

+GeNiXBros | Gaming und Hardware Videos hi genix, out of those three, id' definitely go with the hs7's. yamaha hs series are extremely well regarded and if you have the space for the hs7's you get 6.5 inch drivers, which will give you amazingly full sound, and will destroy the audioengines. krk's are a great choice too, but i'd prefer the yamahas. unfortunately, i don't believe your soundcard has balanced outputs, which you will need to be able to plug into the yamaha's. so in your case i'd go with the krk's

If you're playing modern music, and you're using them as home stereo speakers, you'll probably feel like you need a sub. I use them as desktops hooked to a laptop where I'm sitting maybe three feet away. In that situation, there's no way I need a sub.

If you can get a noticeable improvement in sound detail by spending $200 for a DAC that's a bargain.

I don't have a DAC and even with "pin" sound direct to my cheesy HP Pavillion headphone jack, they sound clean and fantastic. I would definitely love to hear them with a DAC.

You should check out Kanto YU5 speakers, they sound great and have a lot more functionality than the a5+. The speakers have bluetooth , and the remote lets you choose different inputs (RCA, AUX, Optical , or bluetooth) and lets you adjust trebble, bass, and balance. Also you can skip tracks and play/pause from the remote. I only paid $250 including shipping! but that was from a website called Massdrop (check it out too), although the MSRP is $429 but you can find better prices online..thats if you don't want to wait for it on Massdrop. Here's the link :www.kantoliving.com/product/yu5/

+Eyad Kastoun thanks for the reco eyad. yeah kanto makes good stuff, i wasn't aware they made a 5 inch pair of speakers with optical inputs, i have no doubt they sound great, and also sound packed with a lot of features. i do know about massdrop, and at 250 what a steal!

@techfreshness8 жыл бұрын
the mr mk3 are a big step down from the a5+. i wouldn't worry about the a5+ having problems, they have a warranty. you could also check out the vanatoo t1's, see my review if you like
@gopala338 жыл бұрын
mr mk3 don't need big step down because i can get my country found mr mk3 i know i from Malaysia so its can get it i know A5+ got warranty i know i did search almost can get from malaysia 100% and you got any problem A5+ got problem ???? and i see vanatoo t1's only support 110V so not supported malaysia that mean need big step down

You're questioning the price tag in your video, your description, and you even said "400.00 was more than I wanted to spend." Yet you don't even mention the A2+'s to your viewers in the comment section or the video. At 250.00 the A2+'s are still high end, premium speakers from Audio Engine, with a built in DAC. Logically those would make a lot more sense for PC gamers like you. Really not sure why you are reviewing the A5's for PC gaming, when they're much more geared toward higher end, turntable setup's. It's like you said, sitting only a foot away from them doesn't make much sense with the amount that these are outputting versus the A2+'s which would still give you more than you need at a fraction of the cost.

It's nice. But it's still a $400 compromise. And, ironically, it looks pretty cheap.
@cjsvinyl6 жыл бұрын
Bugumir Instead of the A5's, go for the A2's at $250.
