Here's a complete breakdown of exactly how I tune my vocal chain for my workhorse microphones the ElectroVoice RE20 and the Austrian Audio OC818. I through in the SM7B for funsies!
In this Tutorial I'll walk you through exactly how to mix voiceover from EQ, Compression, Harmonic Saturation, and all the other complex stuff that many don't bother to deal with for all the microphones!

so interesting how ears, taste, and perhaps headphones offer different perspectives. The SM7B sounded dead to me and the RE20 sounded alive and resonant. That being said - my takeaway that I came here to state is quite different than what I just said: It's amazing to me how one can end up with essentially the same result with different equipment. Putting something up that is essentially an A/B comparison is not really the most reasonable thing...in the sense that in real life we hear one mic and we would probably still have to go back to the A/B comparison to figure out which is which particularly if a few days or more had passed. Ya know, i think the oc18 is a little bit over processed. Bit too much bass, maybe a bit too bright. And maybe even a little too much compression. I always thought less was more, with that said i still do target some real surgical frequencies as i'm sure you like to as well. I'm a big pro q 3 guy. I totally wrote this before you showed your eq, sounds about how it looks. I like the idea of gullfoss, big time. But it definitely seems to be scooping the mids a bit too much. Definitely hearing too much in the 1k region with that oc18, you may actually be emphasizing your more nasally frequencies. The RE-20 is definitely still a little boxy, and too bright like you mentioned. It has that sort of sound where it feels like hearing your own voice when you have a cold. Just feels congested. But hey, better than dry! With all of this said, for me, and i hope for any other audio engineer, processing vocals inside of a mix is WAY different than processing live/recorded spoken word. I've always gone for a warmer, lighter sound with spoken word. Whereas with vocals, it makes way more sense to really push it, so it's more even and jives in the mix. I think you're going a little too far into the vocals range when you're processing a voiceover.

I’ve been waiting for Black Friday to grab Izotope’s Mix and Master Advanced. I plan to use their sculptor (like gulfoss - a spectral shaper) to clean up the midrange and to deess, then using a EQ that tracks the harmonics (either that or potentially some surgical dynamic dips at the resonances, will have to experiment), then running into a deesser, a compressor to level out the audio, a colorful compressor (barely touching that - mostly for saturation and vibe), then hitting an exciter gently to add even harmonics and give a little bit of extra clarity.

Great update & big help for me 👌🏻having both RE20 & SM7B One question, it looks like the RE20 HP switch is active, do you see much difference when in neutral mode? I’m also playing with switch on/off options and honestly prefer it active (for my voice) as it sounds less muddy but seems most of YT creators preach to keep it in neutral. Hints/thoughts? Thxs again !

Good eye! I have been using it with the HP active yes, I found it makes my voice a tad bit clearer, but I actually switched it off after this video just to experiment, my RE20 chain was just a tide bright so we'll see if it yields some different results :)

just FYI, I don't think you're quite explaining properly how Gulfoss works. The recover setting dictates the eq to boost certain frequencies that it deems to be masked from other over dominated frequencies, whereas tame is the reverse, reducing frequencies that it deems to be over dominating the signal. And the bias really just dictates whether you want the eq to focus on the low end (negative %) or the high end (positive %). It's not about its bias towards the recover or tame because you're already essentially dialing in the bias through adjusting those individual parameters.

Hi The Chill Melodist, Eddie from Soundtheory here. This description isn't quite right either. Recover and Tame and both capable of boosts/cuts across the entire audible spectrum on their own, so they aren't exactly opposite's of one another and they don't focus on low-end or high-end as mentioned in the video. The processing is entirely dependent on the source information and not grouped by certain frequency regions or bands. Your description of Bias is incorrect. Bias is simply telling Gullfoss whether to prefer Recover or Tame in borderline cases. It is essentially a user defined weight that is then assigned to either Recover or Tame when Gullfoss is on the fence about which to choose. I recommend using the built-in metering (bias, recover, and tame meters on the left, brighten on the bottom) to test the functionality. For example, set Bias to 100% and Tame to 200% with everything else at zero. You're essentially telling Gullfoss to favor Recover in all cases, but the Recover parameter is set to zero. Dial Tame back down to a more reasonable settings and now you have a cut-only processing that works great as a de-esser.

Is there a particular reason you use the first plug-in EQ rather than the stock ableton ones? I try to make the most of all the stock plug-ins unless there's some compelling feature, and I don't really see the advantage of the Infinity EQ over the native EQ Eight.

Nice vid. My voice has a quality that I describe as sounding like a goose honking through a telephone, so I cut a lot at around 1-2 kHz. My fav compressor is an LA2A (optical comp) emulation, but it's been a while since I've tried a different one. I also really like TDR Nova at 1-2 kHz to take some harshness off my voice, and at around 7.5 kHz to de-ess. I'm sort of learning as I go, but this is where I'm at now. Do you ever have any EQ cuts for room resonances?

Definitely! For room resonances, I just suggest not BOOSTING to find them, but if you hear any obvious resonances without boosting first, THEN boost to find it and cut. Hope that makes sense haha

Ya it’s usually from 300-800hz. Boost each frequency till you hear something bad. Then cut it by a few db. Be careful not to cut too much or with too wide a q. If it starts to sound effected or artificial cut less dbs. I also think it’s worth spending the money on hiring a really experienced mixing engineer at least once. Someone whose work you admire. I had Larry Crane mix a record and he did is a couple days what would have taken me months. Plus he has gear that I just don’t have or will unless I get rich. That’s my two cents. I also did a a record with John Baccagaluppi. These are the two guys responsible for the magazine Tape-Op which is essential reading for anyone into recording. I hate that on the GOXLR that I use which is great for streaming and that stuff, that there is no thing like a high shelf and low shelf or high pass low pass, so setting it up mess ups my brain and I just can´t setup my SM7B to sound good

Well, to be fair most hardware interfaces don't have that stuff! I would recommend building some sort of chain in OBS if you're steaming! They have a few plugins native to the software that should help

Suggestion: Gain matching is imperative for comparing sounds. Louder sounds are always interpreted as being “better” (by our brain).

Yep that's true :) when comparing mixes I always gain match. This was more of a casual example of my processing than a direct comparison of tones. That said, gain matching isn't the whole story. RMS levels are always going to be higher on the processing signal due to any compression we're doing.
