my ex girlfriend had one and I thought it was the perfect introduction to subtractive synthesis-I found the layout extremely intuitive and allowed me to understand how the process worked on a simple enough level that I was able to extrapolate that to other synths afterward. I was going to get me and my six year old kid a Korg Monologue for our first synth as a joint Christmas present for the big day next Monday, but then one of these went up on the local Marketplace for €250 and I just thought "Fuck 'em! Haaarrrr!!!". xD We're going to have lots of fun routing the Korg DSN-12 from the 3DS into that patch bay. That "Life of an Artist" diagram at the end of the video certainly rings true right now. :D

I got the minibrute 2s as my first hardware synthesizer and am still in love with it even after new hardware has come and gone. my only complaint of the thing is the dang location of the vco 2 tuning knob. I can't tell you how many times I have messed up my tuning when messing with the cutoff knob.

Definitely not the first but MB 2s also here and the same criticism. The vco 3 tuning, not only the position, why not an octave switch nearby? Anyway I like it, at first the sound seemed weird, it's not all one sweet spot but after a while I started to appreciate it.

You raise a good point about the Arturia keybed. While the aftertouch implementation is good, the actual feel of the keys is indeed spongy. I hope that they begin to implement a firmer feeling keybed in their future products. Even the MatrixBrute and PolyBrute which are otherwise amazing, feel like you're playing a $200 midi controller. An example of an Arturia product that felt good was the Origin Keyboard. THAT felt premium. Also... I love how Nick Batt has become a physical manifestation of PWM. Love that guy. The OG.

The 2S is one of the first synths I bought when I got into this hobby about 5 years ago. I still own it. It makes friends with the Moog semi modular collections I have; as well as other oddities like the quadrantid swarm, make noise trio of things, and is just a big fatty. Years on, it's definitely a larger synth compared to some of its siblings in my collection - but I just can't part with it. It's chonky, the sequencer is fun, and its one of the originals for me.

Hello fellow Quadrantid Swarm user! There was not a lot of info on it except for the MylarMelodies video, where I fell in love with it. I tried expanding the usability with a Keystep to play/sequence it. Unfortunately, the thing only behaves well in poly mode for midi, which doesn't sound that great. It's got way more character when it's in mono mode.
@Daphoid

@@coltonmuri3672 Hi! I really like mine. The sounds are fun; I've been doing more simple patterns and playing with sound design. The build quality as some reviews mentioned isn't bad - just delicate. I do love my Minibrute 2S, but as you rightly say sometimes it's not so easy to get what you want out of it. For me it does absolutely shine in being really bloody accessible and getting to setup a sound is often incredibly quick. It does have a rather bright weird midrangey sound, but I love that as I find it sits rather well.

Awesome video. Agree with the assessment. Without going on for hours about the 2S (which I probably could), imo it's almost great. I found the Brute Factor feature way better implemented on the Microbrute (I think it was in a different part of the signal path?). It's hard to tame as you mentioned but the potential tonal spectrum is huge, I found my favorite 303-type bass ever on that thing once by accident. Oh and I'd always wind up patching the amp to the ADSR and then to the looping AD. That's fun.

I love the 2S so much, but it is absolutely a gateway to modular addiction. You buy one of those and suddenly a Clouds clone shows up at your front door. Truly a blessing and a curse.

I just bought a used 2s because I wanted something that could automate some dynamics for my Boog model d and arturia's sequencer seemed perfect for sending cv. Plus I quite like the character of the sound. It's not a clone but it's very analog. There are some rather lovely ambient demonstrations of what it's capable of on here so it's not all hard techno. It feels like a hugely underrated synth... Which I'm okay with as it meant it could almost be justified in my budget :)

I think i could have guessed this one from the intro. brutes have that gnarly touch, even without brute factor. I would own a brute now as an added module, but I passed on it as a first synth. I had a chance to play with a minibrute several times for a few hours and I couldn't make it sweet sounding. lol I bagged the idea of a basic synth and bought a used x-50 (korg mini workstation ) for about the same price. The x-50 turned out to be an extremely deep and fun keyboard.

Love this episode ! I was in negotiations with my minibrute 2S last night . I don't thoroughly understand the sequencer, and cv enough to consistently accomplish some fairly simple things . Hours of trial and error led to strange noises . The labeling of the cv functions reminds me of the odd 2 digit legends in the Roland menu screens . What SEEMS apparent is not necessarily the case . I better dig out the cookbook that came with it, to decode this alchemical codex . Now for another watch to catch the memes !

I wish this kind of hardware wasn't so expensive here in my country, Brazil. Seems like I'll be enjoying software synths for a while. At least, I hope to have some spare money to start supporting your channel next month. Cheers!

@@AudioPilz they get price gouging and/or the dealers get them at full price overseas, forcing them to price them higher to sustain their businesses Behringer supposedly wants their Volca-like "Soul" series to be cheap enough even for Latin Americans.

My first hardware synth! (though i have the 2s) When I take it out I find myself working with it four hours (due to the 4 sequencers) letting me create everything from kick, hat and melody in one patch and sequence the two oscillators independently from each other. You can also get some nice fm from it if you patch via the lin fm input

Not sure the depth concern at 5:30 is warranted, as 60mm is more than enough, even for most Doepfer modules. Most people would never notice 50mm being too shallow even.

Always enjoy your even-handed analysis. I'm a little surprised here when you said the rackbrute requires shallow modules. I guess it must be objectively true or you wouldn'ta said it, but the 2s + Rackbrute are where I started my modular journey, and I'm like 40 modules in and haven't never found one that didn't fit. In fact compared to the old Pittsburgh Modular thingy and the tiptop mantis I've also got now, i've had fewer "oh crap this won't fit here" moments with it. Anyway, as others have said, the 2s was an amazing place to start me learning what the hell an LFO is, etc.

I came back to this to confirm, I'm thinking about getting one, wholly agree that with an external midi controller (I have the keystep 37) the 2S has a badass sequencer that is more useful to me than a 2 octave keyboard.

Splendid work as always! I would love to see you give a "Tool or Toy", General-MIDI widget sort of treatment to the little Yamaha seq/synths like the QY70. Though most of the commentary I see about them is from their enthusiasts rather than detractors, surely *someone* must think they're Bad Gear.

Got rid of my Minibrute 2s a couple of years ago with no regret because of its filter and AD instead of the second adsr. Still, for its price it is a pretty amazing peace of gear. At least, it was a good try. And your tracks proove it, awesome as usual! Personally, if i would want a keyboardless and sequencerless version i would actually choose a Neutron by [beep] company.
