I bought an EF-303 when it was first released by Roland. I found the instrument visually beautiful - I like red - and its musical promise very interesting, but I never really used it, carried away by the race for novelties that so many electronic musicians experience. It's as good as new if its circuitry has held up over the years. I'm going to get it working again, thanks to your excellent video, and rediscover some of the excitement that made me buy it in its day. Thank you for your extraordinary way of visiting our little world of seductive forgotten musical machines.

Great job on this post! I still have this box... At the time, it was a cheap way to get my hands on Factory PCM 909 + various Drum tones I could pitch and record through outboard, along with very usable engine featuring SH and TB tones, with 2 OSC's in a very compact, knob laden unit. In a world and time of single OSC Juno's, $pendy, yet sparse interface JV Romplers, the flashy, yet underwhelming JP.. this unit delivered a generous serving of those Roland flavors you were looking for , even if it came with a few things you weren't.. To this day.. it still outshines for that detuned osc thing the classic Juno's can't do.. close as you can get to real 909 PCM tones.. with the midi control a vintage SH simply lacks.. Keeper

Never really knew what "digital sounding filter" meant until this video. That resonance hurt.

Came for the bug, a young Jeremy Northam drew me in. Loving the street find mini-keys cameo. The childhood electronics kit boxes have all been ticked.

Well my cheap SH-32 search hasn't yielded any results in years... and now I'm fairly certain that it will never. lol. Your video has shown that this synth still belongs on my "someday" list. _Most_ of the sounds you got out of this thing - I enjoyed, which is exactly what i was hoping for. Thanks again for another awesome video!

I saw a guy playing with one of these things on a train in 2001. I remember because he was fully rocking out on his headphones, but the device wasn't turned on. It was really weird.

8 part multitimbral and they put a 4 octave keyboard on it. roland hasn’t done anything worthwhile since the D50. bad bad gear. even with it’s better sounds, their stuff sounds more like a recording of a keyboard rather than something organic to interact with. a very sterile encounter

Lol, would have sold you mine, if I hadn't sold it 15 years ago for about the same price you paid. And you perfectly reminded me of what I sort of liked about the SH-32, but why I ultimately sold it. I bought the SH-32 thinking it could sort of replace a JP-8080 I had previously sold. It didn't. I never really liked the core sound for a supposed VA synth. It was ok for pads, but it didn't sound weighty/ballsy enough for leads and basses (for me anyway). At the time, I had an Alesis Micon, Yamaha AN1x, and a Novation KS4, and ALL of them sounded way better in my opinion. I've regretted selling several synths, but this has not been one of them.

Easy fix for wobbly Roland 90's knobs (even new ones soldered in fresh wobble), take some 3/8" car fuel line hose, measure the depth of the hole around the pole for the knob, cut hose to length for depth to the surface of the face of the unit, take the hose and slip it down into the hole around the pot and put the knob back in, the knob will be incredible solid from there out because the hose only fits around the outer threaded diameter and not the pot pole itself, I did this to my Roland MC-505 and JX-305 years ago and have had zero issues with knob wobble since.

On a tangential note, despite your dire warnings I purchased the sh4d a good month ago - $399 on Amazon is quite attractive considering its layered sound range. But I use it as a multimbral sound box for my polyend tracker which is of course a great sequencer at heart, hence several tracks using midi combined with some samples on the tracker itself. If you still have access to an sh4d, this combination is worth trying. I find it a compact yet pretty powerful and great sounding, and dare I say it, FUN setup.

Awesome, did request you poke some fun at this cheese wedgie beast. thanks, hope you didnt have to shell out too much, looks pretty shiny. love those cheesy retro sounds though. Roland missed an oportunity with their marketing. Should have released this in a saturated yellow colourway with printed on black holes of varying sizes like something from Ren and Stimpy. Great work, Respect

A 200$ roland juice box with beautiful super saws and an LFO that makes a jupiter blush? This thing is incredible lol. Next thing youre gonna tell me is its virtual analog and not actually a true synth. Meme's aside, this is one of those "bad gears" that makes me question the entire motif of the instrument.... reminds me of that pseudo trance /house era of the late 90s. I genuinely dont know, but in my heart if you told me "Underworld - Born Slippy" (trainspotting soundtrack)was written with this thing, Id be like "yeah that makes sense" lol. Even Halcyon on and on makes sense here. Then again, I want an access virus over a moog, so maybe my bias has a point lol

you can see that oxygen8 keyboard getting browner every episode. I actually owned that, but sold it years ago. You should buy one with white keys. I am not racial, I like black and white keys on my keyboard, but not brown.
@kenn_foxx55634 сағат бұрын
This is the 3rd Microkorg though? The classic brownish one and the XL. (or they want to forget about the XL 👀) Also noticed that the classic one has upgraded into an S version with new sounds (and looks) and some new features (no sequencer though).
@StopTryingSoHard4 сағат бұрын
If it would have been labeled the JP-32 and came in a keyboard model, it would have been a fine synth and sold 10x as many. (And maybe a couple of extra buttons for the menu stuff.) Ultimately, I think it was a fine entry-level synth for 2001.
