I'm still really new to singing, but a tip that has helped me start to get a grasp of how the face and throat contract is when Adam levine told a contestant to work on pronouncing all or most of the vowels. It aids in moving you to different shapes that clear up how some of the runs are done when it would otherwise feel like you are forced to either strain or change keys to hit the same feel. I may be a fool, but that is my 2 cents. Maybe put left and right chanel mics on the guitar and one for the singer and compress the guitar then overlay the vocals. That would probably add a lot to it, and not be that difficult for you two! Good cover!
