The anatomy of the middle ear and cochlea are shown using models and diagrams explaining the process of air-fluid transmission and finally transduction by hair cells. Gross specimens demonstrate the cochlear nerve and its brain stem relays and crossings all the way to auditory cortex. Wernicke’s area and language comprehension and lateralization are briefly discussed. The Weber and Rinne tests are demonstrated along with radiographs showing normal anatomy and a tumor in the cerebellopontine angle.

i cannot understand why some people give thumbs down! This is an exquisite, well-thought, highly organized lecture. Great quality of specimens and a professor with incredible knowledge in anatomy. And she is an amazing lecturer. And all this for free!

Dr. Stensaas's explanations are OUTSTANDING and the clearest for someone with familiarity with the topic but no formal education in it. I've suffered from progressively worsening unilateral sensorineural hearing loss with mild tinnitus for three years. When my word comprehension score on the standard audiology test dropped from 56 to 36, my doctor informed me I am eligible for a unilateral cochlear implant. She told me that part of the deal was accepting that I'd lose ALL of the residual hearing left in the affected ear. Since I spoke with her, I've seen videos from The Mayo Clinic and this one, which both indicate there are two types of cochlear implant surgery, one which eliminates and one which spares residual hearing. It looks like I'll be getting a second opinion.

Imagine the genius that went into this mechanism alone. Imagine being capable of seeing into actual being. The fit of the inner ear to bone astonishing. Space at a premium in the cranial dome and 💀 skull proper not a millionth of a meter not in functionality. Able to operate for perhaps 100+ years. Able to detect the slightest whisper ⏱ and to withstand the raging fury of a tornado 🌪. Able to operate at wide range of ambient temperatures and air pressures. Even in the weightlessness of outer space 🪐. I
