In this video, I'm covering the basics of sampling on the Korg Kronos:
How to bring a sample into the Kronos
How to make assign it to a Multi-sample
How to save your samples so they're available when the Kronos boots
The difference between KSC samples and UserBank_KSC samples
Also, the loop I used is available for you to download as well, here:

I've watched so many videos on Kronos sampling but this one wins over all! You've mastered the way to help people understand what you're saying, doesn't matter at what level they are ! Bravo Dave! I've been your fan since I got to know you from Korg forums and got bunches of your samples running on my Kronos.

Welcome back, Dave, you're a mind reader. Just yesterday I looked up your old video on sampling, but didn't get around to it. Went to look tonight and here you are with this new sampling video. Explaining the difference between userbank and a regular.ksc has turned on the light bulb. Before I was always overwriting my samples and not understanding why. Thx again

Brilliant to see that you’re alive! Definitely looking forward to some more of this. I find the disk mode...saving samples..moving things around..backing up stuff, dealing with libraries/space on my hard drive, all rather confusing!. Your approach is easy to understand and targeted just right for those of us that know a little, but would like to know a lot more.Excellent.

So I finally carved out some time yesterday to devote to watching this video and implementing the step by step instructions so as to organize my samples for specific projects into different multi samples and clean up my autoload booting. Thanks Dave for doing all the heavy lifting for us. The sampling work flow on the Kronos is really quite complicated and your step by step help really made a difference for me at least.

Hi Dave, thanks for your previous advice, glad to see you back on line and very grateful that you invest so much free time and energy . You really should start charging for your expertise, we seem to be more reliant on KZbin postings as Korg's own 6 Tutorial videos really don't do the keyboard justice. 1300 plus pages in the pdf manual warrant more investment from Korg. Good luck with your future plans.

Hey Dave, there's a tip that might help people around the 15:00 minute mark. If you know the tempo and amount of beats in the loop it's possible to calculate how many samples should be in that loop. If you don't know the exact tempo though (like in the example you were using) then guesswork is your best bet. It's just for people who have a snippet of a loop but don't have it trimmed properly.

Great to see you back posting instructional videos. Question #1- once an imported .WAV file has been converted to a Korg Sample, the .WAV file can be deleted, correct. If it came from a USB device, the device could be removed and the Korg sample is intact, correct? Question #2- if userbank KSCs are not loaded into RAM but are in fact streaming, what is getting loaded to where? The script goes into RAM to tell the Kronos to go to the SSD and stream from there?
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 5 жыл бұрын
1. Correct, wave is only needed for import. 2. Basically a shortcut/alias is left in ram as a pointer, but the actual audio is stored in the hard drive.

Really excellent tutorial. I didn't know the difference between user banks (streaming from disk) and loading samples into RAM for editing. I had actually asked how to stream from disk in the comments of the recent Korg Kronos tutorial vid on sampling. So is it only possible to create user banks with as much memory as you have in RAM? I guess that's not really a problem since you can probably load as many user banks as you want just like EXs banks.

Not natively, no. You can edit samples in the Kronos that will let you do that but it's a manual process, and you need to do it for each sample. You're better off editing samples and prepping them on a computer and bring them into the Kronos when they're ready.

Okay. You need to make a single multisample, but have multiple indexes. There's a button called "Create" - this will make a new place to put samples. You can assign the key zone range and original key, but you're looking for Index as the main thing that allows you to have multiple samples on the same multisample.
@kathnrich1
@kathnrich1 3 жыл бұрын
@@AudoraAudio Ty, Is the key zone to be 1 key, what do i need to make orig note and top note?? When i do as other tutorials also say to "create" I get a "set top Key" message
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 3 жыл бұрын
@@kathnrich1 Think of it this way: Orig Note is the pitch of the note (What pitch do you want to come out when you play the key) and Top Key is going to be the highest key that THAT specific sample plays on. On the Kronos, typically the samples 'stretch' down, so you often want the top key and original key to be the same but that isn't a hard-fast rule.
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 3 жыл бұрын
@UCXll8NZKcMxGmwOPrkWylwQ The indexes start from the bottom up. Index 1 will be on the left side, index 2 is just to the right of that one. If you want it to stretch it upwards, you need to create another index that extends to the right of the last index you created. If you're not sure, create a new index and assign a sample from there to see what it's doing. Sometimes, using a non-tonal sample will help you figure out what the Kronos is doing when adding a sample.

Can someone help to clear my question up please regarding sampling/samples. When I create a sample, I have to rename the multi sample, This is the question, should the name of the multisample be the heading of maybe the song you want to create, and the samples you create within that multisample are used maybe for a particular song…. Or is the multisample more of a user bank name for example, My 80s Music so this is where you would maybe store all samples to with 80s, Then maybe you would have another Multisample named electro music, and within this this is where you would store all your electronic sounds. I found it confusing when I click on multisample and sample and see all the samples I’ve made. I thought Renaming multisample would be like a sub directory . Any help would be great full. Thanks.
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio Жыл бұрын
Multisamples are basically an 'instrument', or that's how they're treated. More specifically, they're intended to be a way to allow the user to create their own source samples. So the idea is that you have the lowest tier which is a sample. This can be a descriptive name of the sample itself, like strgtr-mf-C#3-D#3. (String guitar, mezzoforte, C#3 stretch to D#3) but it doesn't have to be that. Above that layer is the multisample layer. This is the equivalent to a combi but for samples. This can be saved as a description of the entire instrument you're sampling. If you're using it as a collection of single-trigger samples for a song, then I'd name it the song name or something like "DarkHorse-SampleTrigger" or whatever. There's no hard/fast rule, it's whatever makes the most sense to you. In the broadest sense, a multisample is like a folder of samples, but you get to assign parameters to the sample like which key it belongs to, which pitch it plays, etc. I hope this helps!

@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 3 жыл бұрын
@@0101119976 Oh gotcha! Okay, so it's a little more complicated. You'd have to copy the samples, userbank samples and folder to the USB stick, move it to another Kronos, save those files to the hard drive, and load the _UserBank.KSC to start when the Kronos starts to make sure the samples are all there. From there, once they're in memory, the program is just going to reference the samples by name. If it can find the name of the samples, they'll work, but it's making sure they're loaded as a 'library' of sorts that is the tricky part, which is where the copying/pasting from the USB stick to the hard drive needs to take place. Hopefully this makes sense?

Anyone have experience with - if you sample from an external CD Player, if its worth the money to go buy a spdif cable for full digital input to the Kronos ?
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 5 жыл бұрын
It's not worth it - you're better off doing sample editing on an actual PC. Pulling it from a CD on a PC gives you a 1:1 digital copy where going through the Kronos would go through the D/A conversion process. If you're using SPDIF (which is possible) why? I could only see this being a situation where you're doing it on the fly without a PC but really it's a workaround to a much better solution.
@mrdali67
@mrdali67 5 жыл бұрын
@@AudoraAudio There is a very good reason to use an external CD Player, as 99% of the CD/DVD drives you find in a computer is absolutely junk compared to eg. a 1000$+ HiFi CD Player that may be even 20+ years old but the quality of the drive, laser and electronics is often worlds apart from the computer drives, and if you think you get a 1:1 copy when you rip a CD on your PC your utter mistaken. Yes its already digital connected to the drive, but it will only pick up what the drive delivers to it. All CD's have slight production errors and all drives have read errors, and especially the cheap ones in your PC. Its where the error correction comes in wich makes a really big difference. You can be sure its very basic in a PC drive where as in a good quality HiFI CD Player, a considerable ammount of the money you're paying for it goes to the 1: the D/A converters and discrete analog electronics used and 2: The error correction system used. On an avg CD without a lot of scratches, your best bet ripping on a CD/DVD R/W computer drive is that if you have under 10% read errors your lucky. Thats why I asked if anyone had tried this. If you were to record something into your DAW that you want to distribute you also propably wouldn't use the onboard sound, or even a little better SB Card
@mrdali67
@mrdali67 5 жыл бұрын
I get that the PC solution is miles better, if you need to do some editing, looping etc. since the sample edits available on the Kronos is well .. zero, zip, nada. I have some songs where I want to sample som short vocal stuff wich will be used as 1 shot, no looping from a CD, and I have been thinking about the external CD solution since I have a good Quality older HiFi CD player with spidif out, but the sound i/o card I use for the PC have only analog + midi i/o connctions and these things I want to sample shouldn't require any editing, hence I will propably record it directly into the Kronos. I have listened to some lossless codings of CD's using a digital connected Hi-End CD Player to the ripping PC compared with my own direct rips from the same CD title using my own, actually not a "bad" brand Pioneer onboard DVD drive, and the difference was quite noticeable. The one ripped thru spdif from external CD Player that a friend sent me sound much more open and well defined, wich since it bypasses the da/ad conversion just like the onboard ones, proves that a hi quality drive do make a big impact soundwise ... ITs nerdy as hell, I know, since propably not even my band members and sureely not the crowds we usually plays for would be able to hear the difference .. its just ... kinda the same as you spending those extra 2 hours making that one solo sound for a song be 95% as the original instead of 80% .. I do that myself some times, and the band says .. you spent the last week on that sound .. and noones gonna notice it but you .. yeah totally right, but I am .. :)
