i bought my '66 442 in 1967 for $1,300. 4 speed with trips (3 two barrel carbs). Fast and comfy. 7 miles on a gallon, but gas was only about 32 cents a gallon.

My second car was a 1965 442 that my dad helped me buy in 1971 when he went to work for an Oldsmobile dealership. The motor had been built up and they didn't want to put it on the used car lot because of that. Not as much exterior trim work as the 66-67 body and I thought looked a lot better. Blew it up in 1974 and went to work selling cars with a demo after that.

Thanks, nice overview of a 1966 Icon…..Interestingly,I picked up a 1966 GALAXIE 500 XL( BURGANDY/ Black *DeluxE INTERIOR/ PS PB, *4 Speed/352/4 BBL/ Dual EXHA) in 1967 from Chrysler Dealer.. Anyways, would have preferred a loaded 442/GTO/Corvette but much more expensive…! Memory has that I got it Cheap, for being in Pharmacy SCHOOL at PURDUE !!! Also, oddly, after UPGRADING TIRES/ Shocks/ metallic Brakes( necessary upgrade, as not the DISC Option)/Ford Performance **Coolant Kit((* soon , in all Parts stores), etc.. ; was good driver car & Fun, reasonably economical gas….The GALAXIE 1966 is still fairly attractive, at least upper XL/7L Trims….

As a die hard Oldsmobile fan, I love the Olds content. I wish Donald was right about Oldsmobile not making "sticker kit" cars. I own a 1978 Olds 442. It came from the factory with a 260 V8 with a 2 barrel carb. Both were quickly removed and replace with a 350 Olds motor and th400 transmisson. They claim the 260 made 110 HP and 260 ft lbs of torque. I love the "aeroback" body style but it didn't sell well. They only made it for two years. The Hurst olds only came with a 350 Olds V8 in 79. There was a gap in 442 production from 1980 to 1985. The fifth gen 442 and Hurst Olds sold very well. They were overpriced for the time, but still sold very well. The sixth gen was the Quad 442. I also own (bought new) a 1993 Achieva SCX W41. These are pretty rare and very fast. The engines were custom made for SCCA racing and will rev to a redline of 7200 rpm. Thanks again for the Oldsmobile content. We often get overlooked. LOL

Ah, but there was a 1980 4-4-2 (meaning the 4-4-2 production gap was from 1981-1984,) AND the 4-4-2 package was NEVER just "a sticker kit!" :) The balance and FE2 (later F41) underpinnings were always there, as was full instrumentation, available after 1977 and standard after 1979. As delivered your '79 was good looking, well balanced, comfortable and reliable transportation which -- especially with the Olds 260 aboard -- happened to be ready-made to receive a more powerful, externally identical Olds 307, 350 or 403. There's probably never been an easier engine swap. I did exactly that with my 1981 Cutlass Calais, swapping a 403 in place of its original 260. (Of course I went through the 403 first, adding a motor-home came to suit my rear gear.) But when swap day arrived I had only to modify (cut & weld) the carburetor & kickdown cable bracket and, if there's a next time for me, I'll budget for a substantially bigger (thicker) radiator. Except for those details it was a trouble-free, bolt-in job. I had to beware of cooking it on hottest days, but I always spared it that abuse and it ran like a raped ape. For those who may not know: From 1981 to 1984, the Cutlass Calais was the Oldsmobile for the 4-4-2 crowd. It was nearly the same car as the not-necessarily-fast 4-4-2s of the late 1970s, but it included the Supreme Brougham's chrome trim, plus reclining front buckets and a standard console and floor shift to comfort us for our loss of the 4-4-2 name and attitude. (Then the Cutlass Calais was then renamed the Cutlass Salon from 1985 to 1987, as Olds stole the Calais name to put it on their front-drive 1985-91 N body.) While other carmakers entirely discontinued their muscle-cars (and abandoned their fans,) Olds continued to make and sell not only the look of the 4-4-2, but also the ride, handling, durability and ready made, backward-compatible engine bay of the 4-4-2. With a little extra care and effort, even 400s, 425s and 455s fit. When you think of it this way, you've gotta appreciate or even love what Olds did! ;)

I owned a blue 1969 442 and a 1966 442 that I bought for $75 back in the early 1970’s. I was certainly not a gentleman at that time. The 1969 ran in the 13 second range after a few modifications. It cemented my love for drag racing and lifelong love of performance cars. Absolutely loved that car and wish I hadn’t sold in while in the Marines in 1974. My dad had a 66 Olds Cutlass Supreme 4 door hard top. It was red with a black vinyl top and black interior. It was powered by the 330 V8 I remember the air cleaner said "ultra high compression use premium fuel only" I spent hours polishing that car.

In 1966 i was 11 and a very close family friend pulled up in our driveway with a brand new white 442 with chrome reverse wheels and red line tires. I nearly died i thousand deaths not being able to breath. I got to ride in it many times and when he let it rip banging gears with that 4 speed my heart quit beating and it really fealt like we were in a rocket leaving earth ! My dad and he raced it at the local strip and won many races. My family was in the car business and i got to drive many great cars but nothing ever equaled that car. No Mustang or Chevelle came close then or now, this was a class act and had no equal that Rocket

The 442 package was available on the 4 door sedan in the first year, 1964. The 64 442s all had 4 speeds and the 330 engine. A rear sway bar was standard on the 442. This reduced the understeer that was found in the GTO and other muscle cars.

Very nice olds-66, I had a 72 W-30 w/455 loved that car. When you pulled out to pass someone, hauled it back to third gear, you made sure the steering wheel was strait. Back in the sixties all the hotrodders in our small town would meet at the local Gulf station, place their bets and head south on highway 21 to a long straight stretch to drag. Some good ol boys from Flat River Mo came up in a 442 and blew everybody's doors off. Quite impressive!

For the inaccuracies that Don and Jay may or may not speak, I'm still 1000% behind them in every positive thing they have to say about this car. I spent considerable time and miles driving a near twin to this car ('66, black on black, etc. etc.) some years back on a magazine organized road trip, the difference between cars being no tri-power and a slightly lesser interior trim level on the one I drove - a low mileage survivor, not a restoration so very similar condition as well. I'm NOT a big fan of GM as a rule but there are certain GM cars that cancel that, and the '66 4-4-2 is one. For this 4-4-2's time period it drives as they say, not lumbering and clumsy but smoothly, corners like a performance car should - it's not a track car but it goes where you point it without wandering or feeling heavy (which they are), nimble compared to the SS Chevelle, GTO, GS, and Fairlane GT of the same year. Fit and finish are on par with Cadillac. The car does feel best when driven "deliberately", using a slightly heavy hand. In terms of the street racing that went on (?!) 4-4-2s surprised a lot of people who owned cars that were advertised as Kings Of The Street. The Hurst shifter mixed with the M22 in the car I drove (I also owned an SS Chevelle equipped the same) was/is the smoothest, most precise, easy to speed-shift combination I've driven in over 45yrs, better than a Saginaw, a T10 or Super T10, a New Process, or a Top Loader, you name it from that era and the Muncie shifts better. Rather than continue with this "book" I started (lol), it's better to just outright say that the '66 4-4-2 was/is exactly what Oldsmobile intended it to be - a Gentleman's Muscle Car - dead on.

I bought a used ‘65 442 in ‘66 and it was far from “gentlemen’s” car that Jay espoused. It was a coupe not a hard top and came equipped with an AM radio as the only option. No power steering, no power brakes, no air conditioning, no center console. It had a close ratio 4 speed and rode like a lumber wagon, not great for a road trip. This thing was FAST! The only thing that could beat me was muscle cars with 3 x 2’s. With a fresh clutch I could run her up to 30 in 1st and “speed shift” directly to 4th and spin the tires. Bright red with red stripe Tiger Paws, it was beautiful. What a handful. Glad I survived it.

For the record, Old Yeller was powered by a Buick 401 Nailhead. Same engine that powers my ‘66 Skylark GS, cousin of the 442. This was indeed the golden era of GM style and design.

Donald; There was a 442 as late as 1978. In the Cutlass Salon 'fastback' A-Body. They had either an Olds 260, or a 305 Chevy. Even the 1977 colonade body 442 had the 260 as a base engine, if I'm not mistaken.

I miss the "old" power steering, single finger turning. I've owned a 1968 Charger RT 440, a 1969 440 GTX a 1970 Challenger RT/SE 440 a 1972 Challenger 340 and a 1968 Dodge Coronet 383 station wagon. All of them had AC, power steering, power brakes, TorqueFlite transmissions with console shifters, except the wagon with a column shifter. I wouldn't have had them any other way. A High school friend in 1970 owned a yellow 1966 "442". Love the 442.

in the early 80's, i had a friend with a 67 442. it was missing an engine, so he bought a cheap delta with a 455 and transplanted it. funny how many 20 year old and older cars you still see nowadays, but how rare it was at one time. early 70's when i was a kid, a 50's car was usually a custom car you'd see. never still a daily driver.

What a great car, it had power to spare with power steering and ac. And like you said, my '69 GTO didn't have those luxuries, but it did have lot's of power! In fact, correct me if I'm wrong, I believe the 1969 GTO was the last "No Emissions Control GTO" to be made. I used to eat '70/71 GTO's for lunch because of all the extra drain on the horsepower. I had a 1967 330hp Cutlass in High School. Neat car. To be fair, the tires on this example don’t appear to be the original skinny small diameter bias plus, so handling was probably enhanced over stock. Beautiful roads to drive. A far cry from the stress inducing L.A. traffic Jay usually drives.

One of my first cars was our family car - 66 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 - 4 door - that had such a tight engine it was hard to start after warm up! But I could beat corvettes at any time. It had a 373 or better rear end because it topped out at 110 but got there faster than anyone!

442 was also option B09 Police Apprehender from 1964 thru 1967. They even used the fact that they were police cars in their advertising for 1964. That is why there was a four door option which, from my understanding was 1964 only.

Say what? 4 4 2 wasn't revived, bc it was produced in every Cutlass body style until 1992. Hurst floated in & out of it over the years, but the options package was essentially consistently available until nearly the end of the make. You are in a 1st gen ['64 - '67]. 2nd gen followed immediately ['68 - '72], as did the 3rd ['73 - '77], & 4th [78 - '80]. They took a break, but the 5th gen ['85 - '87] & 6th gen ['90 - '92] eventually followed, & the latter was even front wheel drive.

By 1978 Oldsmobile 442 with a 350 V8 had only about 160 horsepower. Back then you could throw out the catalytic converters and all the pollution controls and nobody seemed to care. We did that and added a set of headers and a new four barrel with taller aluminum Intake and it woke that car up, but that stock smog fuel mileage cam was impossibly restrictive. Next winter a mild/mid Street performance cam went in and some decent used ported heads raised compression ratio to about 9.5. With that and a few other goodies we probably doubled original horsepower and would rev strong into the high five 5000's instead of running out of power at 4000rpm like stock. And finally a rear end gear around a 3.90 made it very worthy to have the 442 badge. It was the fastest 1978 car in our town.

@@paddle_shift Yeah, I'd also say most of the 70's & 90's versions were forgettable, but bc I was in my early 20's in the late 80's I have a soft spot for the 80's 4th gen 'G-body' car. I knew someone w a 1984 Hurst/Olds. Not officially a 442, but it had that 2 tone paint job, black over silver w red stripping, & the 'lightning rod' 3 tree shifter. Had a Olds' version of a Grand National thing going on. Pretty righteous package in it's day, & very nostalgic for me.

That's why we need old car guys like you to pass that knowledge down. Sad thing is you're getting old and a lot of that knowledge will start to disappear.

@@mediocreman2 Old Shop manuals and Auto Repair manuals are a great resource. But yes, age is catching us. You younger folk must pick up the torch. Cheers!

What stands out for me, and might seem strange, are those rear seat round side lights. I just remember those in the 1960’s GM cars (like on my Dad’s 1963 Chevy Impala).
