Thank you for sharing. In 1983, I had a early 70's Pinto that looked like that one. Same color and all. I loved it, but many put it down.

Oh my! Jay! My grandfather had a patent for a water injection system near 1900. It was meant to retard the timing for Les pinging on inferior gasoline. It was also advertised to be used in the cold winters of Rochester NY by then filling it with raw gas as a choke/primer. We have all the parents and a few of the parts!

Donald and Jay might enjoy a story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, called "The. Horror of the Heights". It was written in 1913, but set in 1924. It's a really interesting projection of technology, some awareness of the effects of atmospheric gas pressure, (completely wrong in parts), and an unconscious prediction of a real, but then unknown hazard to aviation. (Thunderstorms.)

It was a stupid idea to put the tank there, and a very stupid decision not to modify it for a few bucks to make it safer, but the Pinto's death per million miles was lower than most cars in its size and weight class of the time. Shhhh... Oh yeah - new sub here. Good luck.

In college I bought a '73 Pinto Hatchback "kit". It had been disassembled to swap the motor into a Mustang II. Wrong motor. 2 liter German motor vs 2.3 Lima (Ohio not Peru ) . The 2300 would eventually develop into a decent motor, early examples were not ! The German motor had a forged crank and rods. I rebuilt the motor on a homemade coffee table in my dorm room. Middle of nowhere NM had a junkyard but it didn't have any low mileage motors. Cars out there didn't rust they got driven. Being a hot rodder I looked at my options. J.C. Whitney had a hot cam Racer Walsh supplied valve springs good for 7 grand and an adapter for a Holley 350 2 bbl and '71 pistons were good for another point of compression. I won't claim, any specific horsepower but it had no problem going over Red Mountain Pass north of Durango. Although it was he11 trying to dial the carb in that thin air. As far as the chassis mods went front & rear sway bars and the fattest shocks that would fit. I couldn't afford mags (poor college student, remember) so decent slightly larger radials on stock steel rims. Several trips back to upstate NY and tour of Old Mexico and other adventures.

Great video. I'll never get tired of hearing Jay talk about cars. In regards to the dashboard, the word "dash" in this context refers to a sudden shaking motion that causes material to fly through the air. Think of a "dash of salt." The dashboard was, as Jay suggests, originally a panel found on horse-drawn vehicles, which prevented muck kicked up by the horse's hooves from hitting you in the face. What's the connection to the dash in your car? Google a picture of a "Curved Dash Oldsmobile". Truly a horseless carriage, it's the first American car produced in significant numbers. The dash is down by the driver's feet. It provided a convenient place to mount some gauges to monitor the engine's functions. Thus the term morphed into the modern sense. By the way, to car a designer, that thing in your car is NOT a "dashboard". Those are found on Amish buggies. An automobile has an INSTRUMENT PANEL, or I.P. So now you know.
