Dave you freaked me out when you showed the forge, then the red tip bit in the vice. Then you grabbed it with your fingers........but it was just red paint, thank goodness. Super idea! Thanks!

Dave, I like it as a long term solution. I have however carved handles out of a piece of dead hardwood (Alder no less) and had it hold up. I dug a small starter hole in the middle of the handle and then drove the handle onto the bit end.

As I have posted before I have a true Scotch Eyed Auger 1". Love it. Definitely worth its weight in my tool roll. You can make a kinds of wooden things hammers, tables, saw horse, chairs and etc. very quickly. Told this story before about a father that we were camping with that forgot his tent peg hammer. Whooped out my axe and auger and made him a hammer. After he used it, he gave it to his son. Which the son adored and talked about the entire trip. The man that made his Dad a hammer out of a couple of pieces of wood. lol Love it Dave, wish the "adapter" was thinner though.

Dave you are awesome sir! I needed a T auger for post holes, we bought 3 acres in the Ozarks, and we are poor as dirt...lol. So I was looking online for something cheap, the Ozarks are mostly rocky so needed a screw type auger. Post hole digger are a joke. Well now I can get the blade and make one! You rock, THANKS!

Hey there buddy how are ya? This is a great solution, I have many augers I bought at a garage sale years ago. I use a brace to bore holes and this tee pipe adapter will work great. Gonna go and make one next time I go down the mountain to town and buy the parts. Thank for sharing, God bless you and yours.

The shank (the end that fits into the chuck) of an auger bit is usually flat enough to grip and turn with an Arkansas speed wrench. Not my preference but it'll will work in a pinch.

Wow, always awesome Ideas, Thank you for sharing . Blessings. I found a 2 speed Manuel operated drill-brace in an antique shop. I,ve used it for drilling at a cabin with no electric and for tapping trees . It,s all metal with gears. It,s between 16 and 18 inches long but a little heavy for packing over an extended hike . I do it anyways just to push myself a little. It,s hand addjustable chuck .

Have I been watching your videos and following your teachings this long Dave?? Lol Yes I have! My brother was trying to tell me about some guy with a Scotch eye Auger and I immediately told him about you and THIS video, from 7 years ago! Great information is important to retain and you provide great information Sir! Thanks for being my reference source!

I really liked this idea and bought the T and the 1/2" to 1/4" bushing that I thought you specified. But, just before heating up the adapter, I dry fit the bit to the adapter, and found I could probably push the square taper right through the adapter and barely damage the threads. What you might have said is "an adapter with a 1/4" hole". I found that a 1/2" to 1/8" pipe adapter has a hole that is about 1/4". It formed nicely on the auger bit. As a side note: It appears that no one is selling new auger bits in any of the stores in the Vancouver , BC area. How weird is that?

You could always use a socket wrench with a deep well. That's what I use when I'm hanging gates on the farm. It's light weight and fits in your pocket so you don't lose it when not in use

G'day Dave, Yay Team...! The only hassle with that setup is that you won't be able to put Traction on the T-Piece to pull the Bit out of a tough bit of wood, the Adapter will simply decouple due to the Tapered Square Tang and the matching tapered square hole... How's about another short length of Pipe, as long as the "Eye/Socket" which takes the Handle, but just large enough in Diameter to fit over the Entire Adaptor, T-Piece and all ; with a Hole the size of the Bit's Shank, drilled halfway along the Length of the "Over-Pipe", and if the Hole is then converted with a pair of parallel Hacksaw Cuts into a Slot, sized to pass the Shank but not the fat-end of the Tang of the Bit...? Then you will be able to slide the Half-Slotted Over-Ring along the Wooden Handle until the Shank fills the Slot and theTang is trapped and while unscrewing you'll be able to pull on the Handle without the Bit parting company with your Compression-Lock Drive-Adapter... If you make a squillion dollarbuck$ from the idea, then feel free to throw spare profits this way, but I don't expect you to sell enough of them to need to think about that angle...; so you'd better just enjoy it... ;-p Ciao !

Very good idea, maybe a lesson on how to sharpen auger bit would be a good idea too. I have used my mostly with clean proccessed wood, but working in the bush, wood comes with undesirable material that do damage edges.

Another great Idea. It works great too I see. I think I will look for a 4 way 2ea-3/4" and 2ea-1/2" This way I can put a centering handle on top to help keep it in a straight plane. I will put up a picture If I can find one and make it.

In the squared adapter part is it possible to weld a nut and tightening Bolt that way it would make it easier to back out

Good idea, though I wonder why you would need three different sizes in the field. My scotch auger is a nice size and is a nice balance between the three sizes.

A thought for the handle might be to go to the diameter of the 3/4 thread, Slim down one side so that it will side through and engage the black iron threads and thread the hand to engage the other side. this way no slipping or sliding with the handle and chance of breaking or bending the auger, and easy to unthread. Have a couple of those ring eye augers a new one and an old one. Also an adapter for the brace that has a chuck for straight shank drill bits. All the best.

Great Home Made Tool, Dave. I believe they also have a paddle style bit for the brace as well. It was adjustable! You could choose what size of the hole you wanted to bore. I have not used one in years. I need to check the hand tool box. See if it is in there. Great Video. Always enjoyable!!! Lee

Dave there are times when i watch your channel uploads i think or say hmm, nice, i might go in a different way but same result, i like it, that was good wish i was there, this is the same way i do it!!, i use a bow but this was faster, i have never thought in a negative way to anything you have uploaded i think what you do here is awesome and to some i can not see this being anything other then inspiring. A few years ago when the internet was not available to all and still finding its way to the mainstream i was homeless, instead of being in the city i chose to live in the forest that was 30 miles or so away from what used to be home, i lived the bush mans life for 4 years unaided. I wish with hindsight that the internet was available back then so people like you and many others in the woodman/bushcraft community could and would share there skills and ideas with the world. It could and probably would have saved me a lot of frustration trying to figure things out from bad books or simple misunderstandings. I hope that my son has the same interest in all things nature based and there simple yet complicated mechanics that I and all of us woodsmen/bushcrafters love to challenge and live alongside on a daily basis. What eve the future brings to me and mine, i hope you continue to produce these clips and educate all who are willing to learn and watch, as i type thsi my charcoals are probably turning to ash. In my plumbing supplies i have these available and i am about to give this ago, because i can use this on a regular basis and it will save me quite some weight from what i already carry. So directly to you sir 1 word......Awesome....I salute and take my leave to recreate this.

I would love to see a video about spoon drills. From a self reliance point of view they are excellent. Not as effective as modern drill bits in some cases but are comparatively easy to make and are more easily maintained and carried. The are also great for small multi tools of the same form factor as the sewing tool you showed in a previous video as they fit easily into the handle and cut well on both sides when twisting the handle.

If you use a larger fitting you could use your axe handle for turning so its all in you kit as needed. With the hole it should also be able to protect the cutting edge of the auger from breaking or damaging your gear.

If you build a rugged L handle it will make it a lot easier to bore once you get it started. That way you can turn it with one hand and stabilize it with the other.

In regards to auger bits for bushcrafting/woodscrafting what were the basic size(s) of augers used? What is the style/type of those augers you have there? I keep getting the round shanks or flat end square shank online instead of the tapered square shank you have. The pipe and adapter are ready to go but no auger to shape it.

I enjoy your videos, I did try the inkle loom, but it didn't work as well as yours. Maybe because it was my first try, I am going to improve it and try again. As for the foge it's not something being used much any more, but you bring back memories of my youth when my dad had one. Many of the things you do are not really new to me, just a reminder of what I forgot. Some things are new. I come from a time when we used horse and buggy, yes, you read it right. I lived in South America and many things were behind the times In my youth. My brother has more of an interest in foges then me and maybe I could get him to do it for me, if I say please :-)) Have a great day and keep up with the videos, I for one enjoy them. Thanks.

although i am into this stuff and the video is well made, it is annoying that the video does not mention forging in its title "forge auger adaptor diy" is better than the original title. i would have skipped and not felt jipped by it. i do not have nor want, at this time, to manufacture a forge of any kind. then buy a part to modify to make my own auger adaptor. i did look at buying an auger then making an adaptor. i would not forge as i do not have that at the moment, though forging is an interest i have yet to pursue. i removed the thumbs down as that is bad and replaced it with this comment. well done on the video, the ingenuity and content. please rethink the title.
