Scotch Eyed Auger On a Budget - Bushcraft DIY Project

Thanks a lot all my friends and supporters all over the world. Its been crazy much work at my day job so I have'nt got the woods time to record some woodcraft etc. So I'm trying my best to launch something for y'all to enjoy.

Field expedient? It required a drill press. Which is orders of magnitude more expensive than the finest scotch eye auger.

check with your local technical collage. the welding programs (and machine shop, and other programs) will often take on (non commercial) projects for a nominal charge (Last time I needed a welding project done, I think it was something like $10 to give me access then $5 to get them to patch a leak in the fuel tank for the motorcycle I had just bought) plus the students tend to enjoy having real world projects to work on instead of just laying beads on scrap metal

This is a great idea if there's enough metal left in the auger shank to handle the forces involved. I'm going to try this one (looking for the biggest shank I can find.) BTW your drill bits will last longer if you slow your drill press down ... WAY too fast for the application.

Hi Corwin, I have the same looking bit as in the video - same colour and same tip profile. The angled tip of the bit indicates that this style of bit is not intended for drilling metal. Even so, youtubers demonstrate that any drill bit works on drilling through steel sheets if you slow the speed down. However I've not been able to make even a dent in my auger with my drill bits - slow speed, high speed... any suggestions? I feel like this is due to the auger being made from hardened steel... My drill bits now look like they have been severely filed down, yet the auger looks brand new...

@@icarcus1531 If the auger bit that you have is hardened tool steel it will be very difficult to drill with anything less than carbide (very $$$), and even then it will not be easy. Without seeing exactly what you've got, it's difficult at best to give advice on this. You may have to temper the area you want to drill on the auger to bring the hardness down to a level softer than your drill bits.

yeah that was maple. But should be no problem. If its to hard you need to sharpen your drill bit

Shacklebolts. They are used as attachment points for chain/ rope/ vehicle tow straps/ and as mounting/ attachment points for towing or securing objects/things/ vehicles/ military vehicles/ military equipment to rail cars. Hardware/ vehicle parts stores commonly have them

It is very easy to find a stick of the right size. Maybe not in the desert but in the boreal woodlands no sweat

@@Swedwoods I designed one scotch eyed auger=(Settlers Wrench) without welding or drilling or attaching. A 7" tube with hex hole through one end to drive an ivy classic four flute wood auger 1&1/2" and 1&1/2" I.D.tube that the auger can be carried within the tube for a smaller overall compact size. Enabling the ability to drill at a considerable angle for more of an A frame looking structure with the considerably longer tenons achieved by the tube. In case you were interested sweetheart. Are you by any chance Swedish????

nice...but engenders isn't stupid guys. So they make that drill bit tail for that size and form and it's not just for fun, is not more than it needs ( more material that it needs- more price - less productivity) . So that you drill a hole in it you make higher chance of breaking
