How she manages to show a smile, whilst hitting a top note at the same time is beyond me but she does it. Heavenly voice and charismatic presence. I have lost track of the number of times I have listened to this. Although the second half of the song was in Swedish, according to a Norwegian woman who commented a couple years back, it was lovely and I enjoyed it as much or more than the English part even though I didn't understand a word of it and wouldn't have known if it was Norwegian or Swedish. By the way what is wrong with the 179 knuckle heads who gave this a thumbs down.

Well Patrick none of us can answer that last one for you. They were probably born after 1995 or so. Sissel sings in 5 languages from my understanding. and she speaks perfect English with only a tinge of dialect. I do not know how she does any of this to be perfectly honest about it.yep she sounds more "American" than most Americans! She's not a "performer" like so many others... she is in fact, a gift.

From a young child thought how sad is this song? Why do adults sing it? I read the pome's to someone today and told him, I said this poem could kill someone if not in the right frame of mind?, He agreed, said: " do you realize most people don't know that it's a Scottish poem? Written in 1788 by Robert Burns?" (I had just learned it myself from reading it I never knew )"Than later set to the music of a folk song.Translated into English not everyone loves poetry, like us" I'm grateful they found you, K It Finally hit me, today while reading it with a tear in my eye what it means. This is what I came up with and why its lasted 200 years (damn pome song always make me tear up or cry no matter what time of year it is) It's about connecting with others. The kind that binds you to someone forever, loyalty, friendship, kindness, love; Even though that person might not be with you anymore. It's about the human spirit's ability to hope for the future while enduring rough times by remembering these precious human attributes. Each year sees many suffer from both naturally created and man-made hardships. But with each there were others willing to step in an attempt to relieve some of that hardship, exercising the best of the human spirit. So even as a child I knew it was sad it doesn't just have to be played read on New Years Eve I bide you all hopefully a great 2018 good by 2017 I wont miss u lol

Per Eriksson You wrote "then she wouldn't need the microphone?" I think we need to be more precise. I too am an "opera snob." I too am fully aware that Sissel is not an opera singer. But that said, many classical crossover artists possess some of the same technical abilities as bona fide opera singers. I believe Sissel, whom I admire, is one of them. As to not needing microphones, that is 100% correct -- if one is performing in a standard opera hall. In a vastly larger space such as a stadium, which was never intended to be used for opera or other unamplified classical performances, not even Birgit Nilsson would be able to make herself heard beyond a certain distance.

Per Eriksson In addition to what Bevin Chu said, in every video you see, they are recording it for TV or DVD, so she needs a microphone for the uptake of the video. TV cameras don't just magically record sound.

Robert Jones Yes. Also correct. Some mics are used for hall amplification. Others are used for sound recording. Not always easy to know which is which unless one is a sound engineer.

Bevin Chu Robert Jones Thank you for the very clear explanations! I'm very aware of what you are saying and I agree totally. The thing that made me reply is the use of terms that I don't think is appropriate to use for this video. Sissel is a beautiful singer in every sense but "bel canto" and "squillo" are very much terms for another genre of music. You should be able to sing FFF and PPP always with the brilliant "squillo" (headvoice) that makes the sound carry. I just don't feel (in my own body) that she uses her support in the right way. It's all very gentle and soft and beautiful (which is totally fine). I would like to hear her SING! And yes, I'm a bit of a opera snob so no offence taken =) I miss the neeeeerve! The feeling of a sleeping lion, That is what makes a good singer. PS. Birgit Nilsson had no limits, she could be heard from the bottom of the ocean!
