‪@MiltonPhoto‬ posted an open source rant yesterday : • Video . While I can get behind most of the critics, I feel some of them might stem from underusing what's already in the soft. In any case, darktable 4.0 will be released with new color features that will help a lot getting reliable colors from start to finish, and even to nail any particular image content to a specified color target defined in CIE Lab, which falls exactly in the use cases described by Shane, so it's a good opportunity to present them.
Here is the documentation for each of the presented features :
Batch-processing workflow : docs.darktable...
Spot color-mapping in color calibration : docs.darktable...
Color Checker calibration : docs.darktable...
Spot color-mapping in exposure : docs.darktable...

As always, thank you both for this video, but, more importantly, for all of the work you put in. So many of us benefit from you giving your specific skillset, sharing it with the world for no upfront $$$. Sometimes the loudest of us do not represent the majority of loyal users/followers. Looking forward to digging into darktable 4.0 soon.

Darktable is better because of you. Your contributions are priceless. It would be fun to do some printing and some experimenting. Thank you!

You're doing god's work. You're amazing. Darktable wouldn't be nowhere near this good if it wasn't for your input. Big respect

Thank you for your work on darktable. I'm consistently staggered by what you all accomplish with it in an open source project. I enjoy it so much.

AP I was just wondering about the WB sensitivity you talked about with filmic v6 and the blue highlights.... Why does this happen only with CC and the modern WB ... At least in a few images I tried if the WB is legacy as shot...you don't see it adding filmic...but if you have WB at D65 and CC set to as shot...the image pre filmic looks pretty much the same but after filmic we will see the blue highlights.... I was just wondering what the difference was in the output of the two WB results to cause the different result with filmic??

Thanks for the video. One question...so using the spot color and color checker I have done it from a new instance of CC and left the initial one to deal with the initial WB... is this wrong...should I be doing it in the inital instance esp the color checker stuff?? Also it was interesting that the example used with the red dress could easily be reproduced in ART and DT using display referred methods but the dress appeared to be entirely out of gamut when set to match the edit or jpg output....its hard without the color checker shot for that image to comment on absolute color accuracy. In Art I found the default profile and the camera matched profile initially yielded a more magenta dress. If you enabled the automatch curve with these profiles then it came back more to red as Shane expected. But then tweaking the curve model away from standard to say luminance or other would shift it back to magenta so care with these norms and curve models needs to be taken... If instead I used the DCP from Adobe as the custom profile and no curves in ART just the DCP curve then it was again that red.. DT was somewhat similar. If I used default scene referred the dress was magenta but using the basecurve gives the red dress if you use no as the chrom preservation or using an ICC made in the xrite software for that camera and using unbreak to apply the the gamma again was that similar red.... So there are lots of factors that need to be considered and kept consistent. I wonder if all the gamut mapping that you are talking about in the DT scene referred workflow doesn't offer that deep red as it is managing the gamut..... It would be nice to have a similar "red" shot with also a color checker shot and to look closely at the two workflows to see what would be the end results when you took all the necessary steps to calibrate and you kept all the settings consistent ...

Please add the histogram to the Color equalizer module. I use the color zones module a lot, and I'm looking forward to the replacement.

How do you use the information carried by the histogram in this module ? This has never been useful to me, and for this module, it will be a bit slow to compute.

@ I use it to check what the dominant hue range in the picture is. For me, it provides the same information as the standard luminosity histogram, but it visualizes the pixel distribution in the color spectrum.

I love Darktable man, I'm not doing amazing work with or anything, just regular everyday photos but still love having the power and flexibility that it provides!

I've been curious about Darktable and have been trying to learn how to use it since version 3 for over a year, I've read the manual watched videos and everything but find that the learning curve is just to steep. I've been using Lightroom since version 1.4 and it is just easy. The thing is that I would LOVE to switch to DT but haven't been able to really grasp the workflow and the tools, it's a shame because I've seen other photographers do amazing things with it. The other issues I have with DT are the masking tools, the masking brush it's just not worth it I'm very used to the way brushes work in Adobe and now with the AI it just is incredible. If there was a way to really work with masking as easy and fast as in Adobe I would probably put my mind to it and finally switch to DT. The other issue is that in MAC OS it's not really stable and consistent, and although I own a Windows powerful laptop my main work is done on MAC. To bad because I would love not to pay for Adobe products, I ditched premiere for Davin I Resolve a few years ago and I'm quite happy, if I could ditch the rest of Adobe software I would be joyful.

Quick and simple question: will version 4.0 support Fujifilm x-trans c-mos 4 sensors? 3.8.x does not. Answer urgently needed. Otherwise I am stuck with rawtherapee ( great software, bthw)
